State of the Union: Our Unity is What Makes us Strong
by MPAC (Muslim Public Affairs Council)
Tonight, President Barack Obama focused his State of the Union address on the future of America. There is no doubt that the past decade and, specifically, the past few years have brought a host of challenges including an economic crisis, heated national discourse and threats to our national security; however, this address focused on what the future will bring to our country and the place America must occupy in the world.
The message of the President was clear –that the many challenges and opportunities we face as a nation must be met with a united front. The Muslim Public Affairs Council shares that same vision — our ability to look toward the future together as a country is what makes us unique.
“We may have differences in policy, but we all believe in the rights enshrined in our Constitution,” said the President during his address. “We may have different opinions, but we believe in the same promise that says this is a place where you can make it if you try. We may have different backgrounds, but we believe in the same dream that says this is a country where anything’s possible. No matter who you are. No matter where you come from.”
The President is right that our diversity is a unique strength that no other nation can surpass. This diversity is something that the Muslim American community cherishes, as we are the most diverse religious community in America.
The President’s remarks about the Muslim American community sent a strong message: America has not lost its ability to include all who call it home as part of the mosaic.
“And as extremists try to inspire acts of violence within our borders, we are responding with the strength of our communities, with respect for the rule of law, and with the conviction that American Muslims are a part of our American family,” Obama said tonight.
MPAC believes that our nation’s ability to be leaders, in both principles and material well-being, will allow us to continue that uniqueness. Leadership and innovation in democracy, human rights and freedom are as important as our leadership and innovation in business, renewable energy and the next scientific breakthrough.
The President’s remarks about Tunisia serve as a reminder that our leadership in the world will be enhanced when we support the aspirations of people for freedom, an aspiration which we struggled for as a country for centuries.
“We saw that same desire to be free in Tunisia, where the will of the people proved more powerful than the writ of a dictator. And tonight, let us be clear: the United States of America stands with the people of Tunisia, and supports the democratic aspirations of all people,” Obama said.
