A national day of protest demanding the burqa be banned has raised fears it could provoke Cronulla riot-style hysteria. Almost 14,000 people have signed up for Monday’s “Ban the Burqa Day”, which urges protesters to wear a balaclava or mask. But Islamic leaders labelled the event racist.

Organiser Kye Keating, 20, instigated the protest with two friends via Facebook after Sydney woman Carnita Matthews used her burqa to quash a jail sentence for deliberately making a false statement to police. “This event is not aimed at race, it is not aimed at religion,” Mr Keating said. “It is just aimed at concealing your identity in a public place. If everyone is not allowed to do it, no one should be allowed to do it.”

But many have said they are disappointed with Mr Keating’s apparent lack of knowledge on the topic after he appeared on Nine’s TODAY this morning. “I’m not the most educated on this subject, I just had an idea,” Mr Keating said on Nine.

Viewer Natasha Kastermans said: “It was great that this got heard on the TODAY show, but seriously you knew you were going to go on there and you had nothing constructive to say about it… FAIL.”

David Thatcher said the “Ban the Burqa Day” was absurd and irrational. “The vast majority of Muslims, and groups that represent Muslims, support the police in verifying the identity of women who wear burkas,” he said.

The furore comes after the Baillieu Government revealed this month it would investigate if there was a need in Victoria for laws, being adopted in other states, that empower police to force Muslim women wearing a full veil to reveal their faces.

Islamic Council of Victoria director Nazeem Hussain said that fewer than 3000 Muslim women who wore burqas in Australia had no problem taking the garment off for police, who have power to demand identification. “This kind of mass demonstration, this mass show of intolerance is just that,” Mr Hussain said. “I would say it’s hysteria reminiscent of Cronulla.”

Muslim community spokesman Keysar Trad said women chose to wear the burqa for religious observance, not to hide their identity. “All I see beneath that call is bigotry and intolerance,” Mr Trad said.

Liberal backbencher Bernie Finn, who supports banning the burqa in some places for security reasons, said people were entitled to express concerns about the garment.

  1. I do not know but it looks as if this boy has or has had a nose ring. I would never take the suggestion of a person with a nose ring. It is a visual reminder that their judgment is poor from the get go. I do agree though that if one person can cover their face then everyone should be able to cover their face, however, the police should be able to demand the mask come off. Now since I believe in equal rights and I do not want everyone wearing masks as it would make me nervous, I think we can do without the masks or veils and chalk it up to not all religious traditions have a need to be carried into modern society.

A question do girls that attend school have a right for face covering? If so does a teacher or principal have the right to ask them to take off the veil? Could a boy claim to be a transgendered Muslim and wear a veil?

  2. If calling these people ignorant bigots is within your guideline of being “nice”, then it seems clear that your site is an arm of Islamist propaganda. How far do you think the people of Troy pushed the wooden horse into their city before any had misgivings. Did any have apprehensions that they were being duped.Even the British Prime Minister has said that multiculturalism as a policy has failed. If people are so determined to wear the burqa, why do they not seek a country where this is the cultural norm? Or do you think we should continue in blissful ignorance of the wider issue of triumphal Islamic imperialism? No doubt Winston Churchill was called many names too, but refused to be intimidated.

  3. “just wait until they have burqa wearing crews.”

Burqa has been around for 1400 years, and no Mob has adopted wearing it.

Ignorant bigots. You can oppress Muslims all you like, but you ain’t ever going to inflict a single harm on Islam.

  4. Really? It’s not a racist event, but the kid does seem a little… out of his depth. With respect – I completely understand why he has this idea – I think any concept like this to be presented in the public and intellectual arena needs to be thought out a little better.

I’m totally for verifying the identity of burqa/niqab wearing women in matters of security. That’s the most obvious thing in the world. Even in Saudi they do this, anyone suggesting that 99.9% are against checking the identity of veiled women is, to put it bluntly, a moron.

We all want to be safe and secure, but let’s face it, if banning the burqa was really about national security, we should ban surgical masks (commonly worn in polluted areas) bags, pockets, breast implants, sunglasses, large hats, tights over heads, balaclavas, or how about this for a crazy concept: Gun control.

But really, security is a state of mind, and our minds don’t always work according to empirical fact.

  5. “so why all the crying about the palestinians? why all the crying about the headscarfs bans in france and belgium?”

I think I made my point about the Burqa, to ban it is bigotry.

We’d cry about any innocents that were being oppressed and killed. It’s quite funny you know, you go and kill one innocent Iraqi Muslim, and God just plants another Muslim in your own back yard.

Despite everything, despite the media propoganda, the anti-Islam hate, the intolerance, Islam’s still the fastest growing religion, by converts in your own western lands.

That’s what I meant by “you can’t inflict a single damage on Islam”, because you can’t and never will.

  6. […] […]

  7. “But Islamic leaders labelled the event racist.”

I never knew Islam was a race. Imagine that, you learn something new every day.
