Herman Cain: Americans Can Stop Mosques

17 July 2011 Huffington Post 11 Comments Email This Post Email This Post

Herman Cain

Herman Cain said Sunday that Americans should be able to ban Muslims from building mosques in their communities.

“Our Constitution guarantees the separation of church and state,” Cain said in an interview with Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.” “Islam combines church and state. They’re using the church part of our First Amendment to infuse their morals in that community, and the people of that community do not like it. They disagree with it.”

Last week, the Republican presidential candidate expressed criticism of a planned mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, telling reporters at a campaign event that “This is just another way to try to gradually sneak Sharia law into our laws, and I absolutely object to that.”

“This isn’t an innocent mosque,” Cain said.

On “Fox News Sunday,” Wallace pressed him about those comments.

“Let’s go back to the fundamental issue,” Cain said. “Islam is both a religion and a set of laws — Sharia laws. That’s the difference between any one of our traditional religions where it’s just about religious purposes.”

“So, you’re saying that any community, if they want to ban a mosque…” Wallace began.

“Yes, they have the right to do that,” Cain said.

Cain has made a number of controversial comments about Muslims, including a vow to be cautious about allowing a Muslim to serve in his administration.

On Sunday, Cain defended his position, telling Wallace that it’s not discrimination.

“Aren’t you willing to restrict people because of their religion?” Wallace asked.

“I’m willing to take a harder look at people who might be terrorists, that’s what I’m saying,” Cain replied. “Look, I know that there’s a peaceful group of Muslims in this country. God bless them and they’re free to worship. If you look at my career I have never discriminated against anybody, because of their religion, sex or origin or anything like that.”

“I’m simply saying I owe it to the American people to be cautious because terrorists are trying to kill us,” Cain said, “so yes I’m going to err on the side of caution rather than on the side of carelessness.”

  1. An angry man who carries his prejudice on his shoulders. He needs to be trounced by the voters.

  2. Wasn’t it Mussolini who wanted to allow only one religion and Biz to control govt and “manage” all?

A PLACE for interfaith work and moderate Muslims too would do much to help things heal and for people to come together and get educated . There are many Muslims who fight in the US Services and there were Muslim 911 First responders, injured, and dead.

How can we send troops overseas to possibly be disabled or die and then have these other fundamentalists work against the very principals they are fighting and sacrificing for ?

Why would these people want to instill fear and take away freedom of religion other than for more power and control by one fundamentalist group for Corporate Tea?

  3. Yet another reason to NOT VOTE for Herman Cain. Of course he’s not “prejudging” Muslims, he just doesn’t like terrorists. What an idiot! Doesn’t he listen to himself? How could any freedom-loving American possibly take his bid for the oval office seriously?

What would his first 90-days as President be like? First, stop building new mosques. Next, tear down the existing mosques. Third, expand Guantanamo until it is large enough to send all American Muslims to live there. NOW he’s a happy President and tells America we’re all safe. But we’re not safe from the terrorists, and we can put his picture at the top of that list!

  4. It’s nice to see that people are still taking a stand for us.
I thank them all for their support and for the fact that they took the effort to understand us.

  5. He does know that terrorist don’t need a mosque to make terrorist plans…

  6. Ignorant jerk. Just because Iran is an “Islamic Republic” he thinks all Muslims want to build Islamic states. As if we didn’t have plenty of “Christians” here in the USA who want to establish a “Christian” theocracy.

Mr. Cain ought to explain how he intends to defend the Constitution while violating two of its articles: the First Amendment (of course) and Article VI: “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

But let him run. Let him and Michele Bachmann bring out the lunatic fringe of the Republican party and sink them just like Barry Goldwater’s wingnuts did in 1964. Every speech he makes improves the Democrats’ chances.

  7. These people should be challenged to produce evidence for their claims against American Muslims.

This idea of bringing accusations against Muslim communities was brought here to the US from the Netherlands, where they have never had a serious debate – according to the rules of REAL debate where you produce evidence for your claims – with Wilders.

As a result people like Wilders and Cain can go around with myths and conspiracy theories about “Muslims” in their communities that there is not a shred of truth to support.

Do you know that the claim that the “Muslims are taking over Holland” has NO evidence to support it whatsoever?!

Do you also know that there is NO evidence to support such claims that “American Muslims are prone to terrorism and want to impose sharia law?”

  8. “Islam is both a religion and a set of laws — Sharia laws. That’s the difference between any one of our traditional religions where it’s just about religious purposes.”
Wait. I’m Jewish. Traditional Judaism is also “both a religion and a set of laws”. Am I a danger, too? As I understand it, some Christian sects also observe religious rules, or at least firm guidelines to live by. Maybe the only way we can keep this country safe is by gradually outlawing all religious observances, the way France is doing.

  9. Real Americans need to stand up and stop the hate.

  10. I think the problem that Herman Cain and many others have with sharia is the Muslim practice of attempting to impose sharia on non-Muslims.Some examples of this supremacist attitude in Islam are the riots by Muslims worldwide over cartoons drawn by non-Muslims in a secular country. The rioting and killing by Muslims in Afghanistan over a rumored wet Koran and the actual burning on one privately owned Koran in a secular country by a non-Muslim.An interesting fact about Afghanistan is that Afghanistan is the country where scared Buddhas were destroyed by the Muslim Taliban.Yet no riots or killings followed this desecration of sacred Buddhas by Muslims.Herman Cain is also correct that people who oppose the building of Mosques in their communities have the right to speak and demonstrate. That right is protected under the first amendment of the US Constitution.

  11. Well Mr.Cain simply hate islam and muslims because Islam is a growing religion. Mr.Cain, we are American muslims but we do not control the growing number of muslims, we are weak, it is Allah who controls who becomes muslim or not, which obviously reflects on the growing number of muslims in the US. Now one step back. Okay we might build a mosque, Now Mr.Cain how can we force the Sharia Law by having a building where we simply carry out the 5 daily prayers? Do we dig tunnels all the way to Washington to replace the existing law documents by documents containing Islamic law? NO surely we do not do that. Now if Non americans muslim of any other faith read about islam or hear about islam and are interested to become muslims, Do we muslims force them? NO there is no compulsion in religion. We do not convert people. American people are free in a free Nation and have the right to believe in what ever they like which is your problem. So you do not like the word islam being mentioned in order people do not read about it or find out about it, and that is something you do not have control over it. Sorry Mr.Cain.

Another point, you seem to be confusing Muslims and terrorist as a sigle entity, Well Mr.Cain we are not, and we will not, because Islam teaches us to be kind and just to every one, even non muslims. Because we all have he same creator. Please Mr.Cain remove that Piece of hatred from your heart and read about Islam, and as a last thing, remember that We muslims can only implment the sharia in ourselves and be kind and just to everyone.

Have your say!
