Italy Burqa Ban: Muslim Veil Law Passes Parliamentary Commision

2 August 2011 Huffington Post 15 Comments Email This Post Email This Post

ROME — An Italian parliamentary commission on Tuesday approved a draft law banning women from wearing veils that cover their faces in public.

The draft passed by the constitutional affairs commission would prohibit women from wearing a burqa, naqib or any other garb that covers the face in such circumstances.

Third parties who force women to cover their faces in public would be fined euro30,000 ($43,000) and face up to 12 months in jail, the news agency ANSA said.

The law was sponsored by Souad Sbai, a Moroccan-born member of Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative Freedom People party.

ANSA said the opposition voted against the law.

The draft will be forwarded to parliament after the summer recess.

The preliminary approval was welcomed by lawmaker Barbara Saltamartini, vice president of the Freedom People party caucus in the lower house.

“Final approval will put an end to the suffering of many women who are often forced to wear the burqa or niqab, which annihilates their dignity and gets in the way of integration,” Saltamartini said in a statement.

  1. I do not understand why any government has the right to impose such laws. What’s next? A ban on wearing clothes? Because such a ban would be just as ridiculous.

  2. If the person choses to wear the item, on their own feel will, are they allowed to do so? No other item by any other religion, culture, nationality should be permitted if this item is banned. Fair is Fair.

  3. You should know that these bans can be picked off by bringing cases to the European Court of Human Rights. The Council of Europe has already issued statements indicating that these bans are illegal and violent the ECHR.

  4. maybe rome is afraid the burqas were sending secret messages to lord zedd to help defeat the power rangers.

  5. There is a lot of places that forbid you to cover your face. Is it ok for men to start covering their faces? How easy would it be for criminals if anyone could cover their face in public. I am sorry this is not the same as wearing a piece of jewelry or a hat.

  6. SO you khow what lets start BANNING MORE FRIKKING, CREEPING, CRIMINAL STUFF LIKE MINI-SKIRT and BIKINI and MAKE UP, and PROSTUTUTION and STRIP-TEASE and PORNOGRAPHY AND ADULTUTY AND FORNICATION AND HOMOSEXULATITY AND CAPITALISM AND HEGENONY AND IMPERIALISM AND WARS AND GENOSIDES OF MUSLIMS AND THE LIST IS FRIKKING LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGNG…..SO LETS BAN ALL THE GARBAGES BEFORE THE NIKAD……….

  7. LETS BAN LIBERTY AND HUMANISM AND FREEDOM OF CHOISE AND FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE AND HUMAN INTTELLECT AND FEMINISM AND FREEDOM OF WOMEN AND WOMEM CHOISE AND THE WOMEN AND EDUCATION AND MORAL AND INDIVIDUAL CHOISE AND MORE AND MORE AND SOOOOOOOO MORE……..

LETS CELEBRATE HITLER AND FASCISM AND NAZISM AND RACISM AND PREDIJUCE AND ISLAMOPHOBIA AND ANTI-SEMETISM AND HUMAN DEFECIT AND THE FRIKKING LIST IS LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG..

  8. CRILEY.. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU ARE A MAN OR A WOMAN.. BUT IF YOU ARE A MAN STAY OUT OF OUR BATTLE, IF YOU ARE A WOMAN, THE CHOISE OF THE NIKAD DO NOT DEPEND ON YOU..IT IS UNDIVIDUAL CHOISE AND THE WOMEN WHO CHOOSE TO WEAR IT, ARE OPPRESSED TODAY, BY THE SOOO IRONICALLY “LIBERAAAAAAL” “WEST”

MUSLIM WOMEN YOU ARE OPPRESSED FROM EVERYWHERE..MAY ALLAH HELPS YOU IN YOUR BATTLE AGAINST OPPRESSION……AMIN ALLAH

  9. There bans are illegal. According to the Council of Europe:

One of the main arguments has been that penalising is in the best interest of the few women in Europe who wear the veil. It is being argued that the ban would help them to liberate themselves. There is very little to show that this would be the case.

In fact, the banning may run counter to European human rights standards, in particular the right to respect for one’s private life and personal identity. In principle, the state should avoid legislating on how people dress.

  10. Sahra, I am a man though I do not think of myself as much of a Liberal or a conservitive in the terms people associate with those terms in this day and age. I have no problem with people worshiping how they choose, however, not all religious traditions deserve the right to exist. I do not believe that a child should be kept home and faith healing used to cure them when they have a serious illness. I do not believe that medicine men should treat illnesses as doctors, oh I am not going to make this list, as it simply relates a number of beliefs or traditions various religions have had to give up or limit as they were to far outside societial norms to continue unmoderated.

Totally covering your face and or body in the modern age is one of those beliefs. Number one it allows the wearer to commit actions in which the wearer cannot be identified later. In this age of “fairness’ If one group of people can cover their faces then everyone will be able to cover their faces then it will just be a matter of can you only cover them with veils or can you use a mask? Perhaps a full covering ski mask will be ok. From any of these choices people of low morals will be able to take advantage of the situation. The vast majority of society does not want hooded or veiled people walking around be they men or women. This is not a tradition that sets well in the west and it is not just going to be accepted simply because it is a traditon. I believe that this is on area where Muslims are going to have to give way. I would never support it as it just leaves way to much room for abuse.

  11. sahra,

not only is criley a man, but rumor has it he is christian. believes jesus christ to be the son of god. is that crazy talk or what. maybe when i get to the that part of the koran 9:28 – 9:32 he will see the light. anyways on a personal note are you an american?

  12. They are doing all this out of concern for the poor, oppressed Muslim woman. I’m sure. Women who choose to fully cover out of their own religious conviction will be forced to compromise their values or stay at home. And if there are women who are pressured by the men in their lives to wear a niqab or burqa, do you think they can be liberated by state law? Those same men will now force them to stay at home, thus depriving them of any contact with the outside world.

  13. There is a tradition in the West that people should show their faces I see no reason why Muslims who live in the West should not follow Western cultural norms. I doubt a non-Muslim women would be welcome who wore a miniskirt in public in most Islamic countries. Some women (including non-Muslims) have been arrested from not wearing “Islamic” clothing others have been attacked, sexually assaulted a few have been killed.

  14. Regardless of your reasons for so doing, if one person is allowed to wear full-body (including face) covering when out in public, then everyone, men included, must be allowed the same right. Would this person feel comfortable walking in public, in the midst of others who also chose to wear full body coverings? Would the person not be concerned whether somebody who is approaching you is a man or a woman, friend or foe? Criminals learn to adapt to their advantage to every situation, so if you were ever imposed upon, how would you describe your attacker? It’s an ideal situation for a criminal. In the Western world, anyone who hides their face in a public place is looked upon with suspicion.
