“Islamic” Honor Killings and Crocodile Tears

“Islamic” Honor Killings and Crocodile Tears

This month Pamella Geller published a book entitled, “Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance,” which she describes as a “how to” guide for fighting various Islamic menaces, including “creeping sharia” and “stealth jihad.”  She also describes how Muslims, who make up less than 2% of the American population, are “Islamic Supremacists” plotting to take over every aspect of American life.

Geller has also announced plans for a future book tentatively entitled, “Sex, Murder, and Islam: Honor Killing in America. ”  She says the book will be about the “ongoing proliferation” of honor killings among immigrants to the West from Muslim countries.   Honor killings have recently become the centerpiece of Geller’s campaign against Islam, and feature prominently on her website, Atlas Shrugs.

Honor killings are not Islamic, and they are not condoned in the Qur’an.  This is a matter of fact. Honor killing is a form of murder where the victim is denied a fair trial, which is contrary to Islamic law.  Islam opposes acts of murder and vigilantism, and likens the killing of one human being to the killing of the entire human race (Qur’an 5:32, 6:151, 17:33).  Honor killing is a cultural inheritance which predates Islam by centuries, and  Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the United Nations have all said that honor killings cut across cultural and religious lines.

Nevertheless, “Islamic” honor killings are a public relations bonanza for Islamophobes, especially when they take place in a Western country.  They are used to reinforce the notion that Islam is inherently violent and irrational, and to suggest that Muslim families view a young woman’s adoption of Western culture as a capital offense.  Isolated incidents are amplified through intense media coverage, stoking fears that Muslims are importing barbaric customs into Western countries through immigration.

Anti-Muslim hate sites including JihadwatchAtlas Shrugs, and Frontpage Magazine have been weeping crocodile tears for Aqsa Parvez since she was killed by her father and brother in December of 2007 in an apparent honor killing.  Both men received life sentences for their crime in June of 2010, but that hasn’t stopped Pamela Geller from continuing to exploit the incident to advance her agenda.  She recently managed to raise $5,000 in donations she used to fund a controversial memorial plaque for Aqsa Parvez in Israel.

Parvez is the ideal poster child for their campaign to vilify Islam because she was the teenage daughter of Muslim immigrants living in Ontario, Canada.  For similar reasons, Robert Spencer is exploiting the tragic death of two sisters, Sarah Yaser Said, 17, and Amina Yaser Said, 18, who were shot and killed by their father, an immigrant from Egypt, in January of 2008 in Texas.

Geller and Spencer show little interest in similar crimes when they are committed by non-Muslims.  A few months before Aqsa Parvez was killed, a gruesome video surfaced of a 17-year old Du’a Khalil Aswad in Mosul, Iraq being stoned to death by a mob while she cried out for help.  The video garnered immediate attention when it was presumed to be an “Islamic” crime, but quickly dropped out of the spotlight when it turned out the victim was a Kurdish girl from the Yazidi religion who was killed for having an Arab Muslim boyfriend.

In 2008, a man in Chicago killed his pregnant daughter, her 3-year old child, and her husband by burning down their home because she had married a man from a lower caste.  This horrific crimewas ignored by the usual hate brigade because the perpetrator was a non-Muslim immigrant from India.  Robert Spencer mentioned the case on Jihadwatch only briefly, and that was to complain that media attention should be going to the murder of the Said sisters instead.

Geller’s Atlas Shrugs features a memorial page entitled, “Honor Killing: Islam’s Gruesome Gallery.”  It is indeed gruesome and serves her agenda of inspiring outrage against Islam and Muslims. Unlike the Memini (“Remembrance”) memorial for victims of honor killings from all religious backgrounds, Geller’s Gruesome Gallery is devoted exclusively to highlighting honor killings associated with Muslims.

Geller and Spencer have also been relentless in trying to get police in Tampa, Florida to reopen the case of  Fatima Abdullah, insisting she was the victim of an honor killing and subsequent cover up.   The 48-year old woman died when she fell and hit her head on a coffee table at her brother’s home.  Her brother was not home at the time of the incident.

Pamela Geller says the death is suspicious because Abdullah could not have “suicided” herself by “banging her head on a table.”Robert Spencer wrote about the Abdullah case on Jihadwatch, saying:

This is the sharia in America. The idea that a woman would die after she ‘threw herself to the floor’ or hit her head repeatedly on the coffee table is institutionalized gender apartheid, the sharia. The idea defies logic, belies reality.

As a self-proclaimed scholar on Islam, Spencer should know that Islamic law (“the sharia”) does not sanction honor killing.  The coroner’s autopsy report concluded the “Manner of Death” was “Accident (Decedent fell and struck head on table).”  The detailed medical report does not mention any evidence of foul play.

Jihadwatch later published a page with the headline, “Tampa Police crime scene tech now admits ‘fear of Muslim reprisal’ in honor killing classified as accidental death,” which was reposted to numerous anti-Muslim hate sites.  This implies police lied when they ruled the case an accident, but a closer look at the details shows this headline is misleading.

A crime scene technician from the Tampa police department called the Florida Family Association (FFA) nearly a year after the initial investigation and asked that her name be removed from their website, which has been stirring up controversy over the case, in concert with Geller and Spencer.  The technician did not want her name posted on a controversial public website, though it is unclear from the reports whether she feared reprisal from angry Muslims, or from “activists” aligned with the FFA.

Although Tampa police have stood by results of their initial investigation, Geller and an assortment of other loony Islamophobes continue to exert pressure on authorities to reopen the case.  They have linked the case to their conspiracy theories about Muslims taking over the country, apparently starting with the Tampa Police Department.  Geller has dubbed the city “Tampastan,” and claims Florida police are engaged in a cover up because, “…murdering Muslim women in America is preferable to offending Muslims or insulting Islam.”

It is tempting to dismiss Geller and Spencer for their outlandish statements and crude publicity stunts, but they have enjoyed surprising success, especially in using the mainstream media as a conduit for spreading their hateful ideas.  If they were targeting any other minority group, they would probably be consigned to the lunatic fringe.

  1. (Qur’an 5:32, 6:151, 17:33).

[5.32] For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our apostles came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.
[5.33] The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His apostle and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement,

[6.151] Say: Come I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you– (remember) that you do not associate anything with Him and show kindness to your parents, and do not slay your children for (fear of) poverty– We provide for you and for them– and do not draw nigh to indecencies, those of them which are apparent and those which are concealed, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except for the requirements of justice; this He has enjoined you with that you may understand.

[17.33] And do not kill any one whom Allah has forbidden, except for a just cause, and whoever is slain unjustly, We have indeed given to his heir authority, so let him not exceed the just limits in slaying; surely he is aided.

so what is a just cause?????????????? would not saving one’s childrens’ souls from corruption and eternal damnation not be a just cause?

  2. sorry for my double negative, there should only be only one “not” in that last sentence.

An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
    Mohandas Gandhi

  3. “Moreover, whilst the practice is known to occur amongst Hindus and Sikhs in South Asia and the West, as well as amongst Christians and other minorities in the Middle East, it is still largely confined to Muslim communities in countries such as Iraq, Jordan, Pakistan and Turkey. However, the custom may be equally widespread in Egypt and the Gulf states, where media freedom on the issue is much more restricted.”

“…….the evidence illustrates that Islamic orthodoxy generally condones the practice, whilst not explicitly recommending it per se. The most egregious case in point is the Umdat Al-Salik (“Reliance of the Sojourner” in Arabic), a manual on Shari’a (Islamic law) certified by Al-Azhar University, the most prominent and authoritative institute of Islamic jurisprudence in the world, as a reliable guide to orthodox Sunni Islam.
The manual states (01.1-2) that “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right,” except when “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers)” kills his or her “offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” Hence, according to this view a parent, who murders his or her son/daughter for the sake of “honor,” whether owing to issues of chastity, apostasy and the like, incurs no penalty under Shari’a. This ruling is derived from a hadith (Sahih Muslim, Book 19, Number 4457) where it is affirmed that one should not kill a child unless one could know “what Khadir had known about the child he killed.” Khadir is a figure featured in the Qur’an who accompanies Moses on a journey and kills a son of believing parents for fear that he would rebel against the will of God (18:74 and 18:80-81).”

  4. A just cause ya sayed mike (mr mike in arabic) is accidental, or in a war/battle. Like Moses struck a man, instantly killing him. He didn’t mean it, but the man was whipping a fellow Hebrew man who was elderly and it was sickening to Moses. It was God’s will.

Like if I’m cornered in the street and I know the guy mugging/robbing/raping me is going to kill me, if I can find a way to get ot alive, and the only way to do that is to keep him injured, I should. I wouldn’t have to kill him, but if I end up accidently killing him it wouldn’t necessarily be a major sin, why? Self defense.

Saving your child from damnation? So letting them live is wrong? Maybe our parents shouldve killed us. Come on, bro. seriously?

  5. I don’t think I can keep this up. This woman’s ignorance and bad mental health really blow my mind. Lord I’d love to see her face when a muslim woman walks up to her and hugs her.

  6. I really think you islamophiles are afraid of Pam and Robert.

I can think of three instances near my home where the crimes have honor killing written all over them. Why is it that the rules of islam are defined differently by each individual islamophile? In the case of the Buffalo TV producer who chopped his wife’s head off to the typical islamophile saying honor killings do not exist. In the book The Blood of Lambs, Kamal seems to think honor killings have been going on for a long time in this country. I tend to believe him.

  7. elle,

i understand self defense, justifiable homicide. by point is that to lay down law with words like “mischief” and “just cause” “innocent” leaves things open to a vast array of interpretaions.

i took the lesson in the parable about the green one to be that one should not think they are privy to all knowledge. but i can see how someone would draw the conclusion that killing a “corrupt” child is allowed.

    arent yazidi’s muslims?

  8. elle,

i think you often project your beliefs and interests, being in america to make a better life, as if they are universal to all muslims. i wish that was the case. the world would be a much more peaceful place if that was the case. that maybe the case for most american muslims, but not all. not least of which where 19 guys 10 years ago. (how many times can i say “the case” to much vodka, me brain no work good right now, go rays against the evil empire)

didn’t you once say “no one is attacking christianity”? checkout the islamic thinkers society website:

“ITS calls on Muslims to oppose the United States, Christianity and Western society and culture, especially homosexuality, which they see as Western.[citation needed] ITS is also notable for its hostility to Shi’ites whom they view as not true Muslims.”

more muslim viewing other muslims as apostates.

  9. As God is the final judge in matters of sin, it is not for human beings to take the lives of others to “protect them from sin”: (a) as long as they live, they have a chance for redemption; (b) God is the only one qualified to judge the deeds of a person’s life–in it’s entirety.

  10. Bob Szekely,

so you are not a supporter of sharia? so can human beings take a life after the life has sinned? do you prescribe to Hud ̄ud. a soul for a soul? kill those who spread corruption or make mischief in the land? what is mischief? is blasphamy a capital offense? adultry? the fatawa on rushdie was justified?????

  11. @crazybats
as for that guy who killed his wife authorities determined that his marriage was going thru a rough time and he was possibly mentally unstable as a result and that religion had nothing to do with it, but strange I wonder why religion was never brought up as a factor in the case of a wrestler who killed his family after all he did leave bibles next to them after the killings, and kaleem he is a modern day alberto rivera and as such should not be taken seriously hell just read there stories and you possibly might notice some parallels between them.

  12. @usefulidiotcorey

In February 2009, Muzzammil Hassan beheaded his wife, Aasiya, in upstate New York after she filed for divorce. Phyllis Chesler, author of “Are Honor Killings Simply Domestic Violence,” said, “The fierce and gruesome nature of this murder signals it’s an honor killing” (“Beheading Appears to Be Honor Killing, Experts Say,” Fox News, Feb. 17, 2009).

In April 2004, Ismail Peltek of Rochester, New York, murdered his wife and fractured the skulls of his daughters because he was “concerned that my family’s honor was taken” (Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, April 24, 2004).

-Both of these were copied from the web. In the first case I have to agree, beheading sounds like islamic punishment to me. In the second case he basically told the police it was an honor killing. Feel free to research these two killings. (I am sure the Fox news reference will send you through the roof. An NBC reference would send me.)

-Why is it that when we are discussing a problem with islam we point the finger at another religion? why not defend islam without doing that?

  13. @crazybats
that was who I was talking about when I said “religion was not a factor in the killing of his wife” I just forgot his name and as for other the guy he kept going on about “honor” in his statements he didn’t really say anything about islam and honor isn’t really a religious concept, and I didn’t really mean to point the finger at another religion I was just alluding to the fact that anytime a koran is found in somebodies possession after a crime is committed by them people like spencer tend to go off on a tangent how islam was probably a factor and sites some random koran verse to prove it and considering bibles were found at the scene of the crime that chris benoit committed nobody seemed to go off on a tangent with random bible verses.

“Most honor crimes take place in villages in the developing world, however, not in the parking lot of a nondescript American welfare office. The U.S. is supposed to be the melting pot, where immigrants assimilate into the larger culture, discarding much of their native selves. But some communities — like Faleh’s — have stubbornly resisted that transformation. Noor’s murder was an anomaly, but the attitudes that facilitated it don’t spring from the brain of a single deranged man — they are deeply rooted in an Iraqi community that insists on its right, its American right, to believe in the justifiability of practices like honor killings.

culture is a powerful thing. what cultures should we import??????

chris bennoit went crazy, propably because of roids. nothing cultural there? he killed him self as well as his family. your comparison is not applicable. but yeah the guy cutting of his wife’s head in ny is not a good example of honor killing either. it’s just funny because didn’t he own a radio staion proclaiming the vertues of islam? unfortanutely husbands kill wives all the time. what ever came of the pakistani in queens was it? maybe brooklyn?

  15. @mike
I wasn’t really trying make a comparison I was just making an observation but funny thing about hassan was that and employee stated he wasn’t a devout muslim as he never prayed or fasted much and one more funny thing about it was 3 weeks before hassan beheaded his wife there was another incident of beheading and his religion wasn’t looked into at all.

  16. fair enough, crazy is crazy. i just think god, the omniscent, should have avoided things like: “[8.12] When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.” even when referancing the battle of badr???????? but it looks like the chinesse are a blade culture too, much like arabs, not that all arabs are muslims or that all muslims are arabs….. but please if your going to kill someone in ameraca at least show some assimilation and use a gun. or a car.

  17. corey,

do you think usama bin laden was “a devout muslim as he never prayed or fasted much”? doesn’t al-zawahiri have a prayer mark on his forehead?

  18. Thank you corey.

lovethemmoonbats, Honor killings aren’t allowed. And the fact that some people really believe that they are is sad, so I almost agree with you. The closest any Prophet came to an honor killing is when Abraham was ordered by god to sacrifice his son as a test from God, but as he was about to do it, God sent down a sheep to sacrifice instead. God tested his faith, but let’s say a Muslim man or woman did that now, or tried to, they are mentally ill, or a religious fanatic. A lot of times in the Quran, God gives examples of things that hapened like in the story of the feel, or elephants. God sent down birds that threw flaming rocks on the pagan arab warriors, the had elephants with them btw. and killed many of them because of their persecution of the Muslims. It doesn’t mean non muslims are gonna be stoned now, or at least they shouldnt be. God sends them down as warnings as examples….

Islamophiles huh. And what are you? Maybe a Christian extremist, a fanatic, a radical, for all I know you could be as my friend likes to say “a terrorist-zionist” I dont know, because I obviously haven’t spent enough time to understand your people, i just believe in what the media tells me, I go fishing for bad news about Christians so I can tell you what I saw and how it ties into my intolerant beliefs about you.

I’m not actually like that. BUT, that is how you’re acting. You do exactly that. You believe in misconceptions and you judge me, and everyother muslim out there because of a bunch of fanatic creeps. So does that mean that all white people are hateful and violent to blacks? Like the KKK? Not really. I don’t see that as being very true, and remember, the KKK held honor killing and burned peoples’ homes, lynched many people and acted out so terribly . But I have no hate towards any white person, any christian or jew, or otherwise. like I said, you’re a media-follower- an ignorant person. You have to open your eyes and look at the positives first. If i only looked at Israel and saw what they were doing to Christians, Muslims and even Israeli Jews, I would hate all Jews wouldn’t I? But I don’t.. And yes, they prosecute and target christians, especially if they are Arab. Unless they are celebs or politicians, they aren’t welcomed warmly.

  19. @crazybats
“islamaphiles are afraid of pam and robert” sorry but I don’t see people who have paranoid delusions of halal soup sold by cambells being part of a muslim takeover plot as examples of intimidation.

Sahih Muslim Book 19. Jihad and Expedition Chapter : Women participants in jihid to be given a prize but not a regular share in the booty, and prohibition to kill children of the enemy.

This tradition has been narrated by the game authority (Yazid b. Hurmus) through a different chain of transmitters with the following difference in the elucidation of one of the points raised by Najda in his letter to Ibn Abas: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used not to kill the children, so thou shouldst not kill them unless you could know what Khadir had known about the child he killed, or you could distinguish between a child who would grow up to he a believer (and a child who would grow up to be a non-believer), so that you killed the (prospective) non-believer and left the (prospective) believer aside.

  21. JIHAD, Mike, is a struggle. Most jihads nowadays are seen as blowing people and yourself up, but that’s FAR from the truth. If you go into a battle (long time ago of course) and you fought to protect your family, your people, your country (that’s Americas stand on the war in iraq) then God’s ok with it. Intentionally, if you go into battle wanting to kill, men women children, animals, then you might a well jump into Hell right there. In a battle, you know you MIGHT die, you might injure yourself or someone, you might kill someone if you have to, and I know two famous Muslim women who were famous for their combat in war. Now like I’ve stated before, war shouldn’t be resorted to, but since people just wanted Islam to be cut from its roots like literally, you had to fight.

the two women are: Nusayba, she was a healer/ nurse of sorts that the Prophet went to himself. She was told to be very brave because once during a war she left home and shielded the prophet from damage. He was on a horse and he didn’t ask her to, but her faith in god and her appreciation for the prophet made her WANT to shield him.

Khawla: this lady was a freakin’ ninja. She would dress in full niqaab and abaya and go and fight in hand to hand combat with male warriors. No one knew who she was until she took off the niqaab and spoke. She was a brave and strong soul.

  22. First of all, you can’t be a pious and devout muslim if you don’t do what god commanded you to. Its prof he was not a real Muslim, nothig more than a sick minded creeper who liked killing his own people

  23. well there’s the $64 question? “what god commanded you to”…. don’t you think these suicide bombers are doing what they beleive is god’s command? so now you mention a woman in combat. but mohammad said you can’t kill women. so now we have an exception? did you see the one guy, a learned muslim who said all of israeli society is militarized. so they are all legitimate targets?

this only goes up to 4ad.

“Khawla set an example to men and women alike that one should fight for what he or she believes in, and never accept defeat.” sounds like a good motto for recruiting palestinian, taliban or iraqi suicide bombers? or christmas tree and timesquare bombers. maybe even pilots for 9/11.

  25. Mike

I probably shoudlve thought about the wording.

My bad. Tha does seem kinda terrorist-like doesn’t it. And those suicide bombers are all going to hell anyway. Suicide is haram, period. Plus they probably killed other people or animals while doing it. That’s a murder-suicide, they are going to hell

  26. Mike

They weren’t fighting other muslims, the fought polytheists. They ddin’t care if she was a woman. They saw someone who defended Islam so they went for her.
