“Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child”: The Bible’s Justification for Corporal Punishment of Children Leads to Murder

“Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child”: The Bible’s Justification for Corporal Punishment of Children Leads to Murder

The Canadian case in which Mohammed Shafia killed three of his daughters and his first wife are being sensationalized in the Islamophobesphere as a clear cut instance proving Islam sanctions “Honor Killing.” There are all sorts of wily and convoluted attempts at stretching Quranic verse and Prophetic tradition to mean something they clearly don’t, as Ilisha makes clear in her most recent article.

The video below clearly demonstrates however that there are some Christians who are willing to use corporal punishment to put their children “back in place,” and they do this based on the Bible (hat tip: Omar Q.):

Needless to say such literalism can have deadly consequences, but should we now blame all of Christianity for these zealots? Should we say that their interpretation is the correct one, the one most in fidelity with scripture?

  1. excellent article. it goes to show how, much like those who claim islamaphobia, such philosophies “create an atmosphere” in which it is acceptable to torture people “for the greater good”.

but the author losses me when s/he says “all sorts of wily and convoluted attempts at stretching Quranic verse and Prophetic tradition to mean something they clearly don’t”. clearly the koran states that the “rightous” are to torture the “sinners”. i wonder if the author has ever read the koran or many hadiths?

“corporal punishment to put their children “back in place,” and they do this based on the Bible”. yes we should abandon all of these ancient texts which are brutal by their very nature.

  2. This has very little to do with spare the rod spoil the child as another part of the verse says if you strike the child with the rod he will not die. The bible does not state to use deadly force against children. Jesus also states that as you have done to the least of mine you have done unto me.

These people had multiple children, I am not sure how many were adopted, lived in the middle of no where and I imagine homeschooled their children. It is my belief they simply liked power and control using the children to satisfy their needs. The other family mentioned also had multiple adopted children. Not all people adopt for good reasons and not all are able to handle a large family.

I believe in corporal punishment however, words in the bible have more than one meaning and rod can also mean discipline. In that sense time out could be a rod if it is effective. Many methods of discipline upset children to the point of crying and making a parent feel as if they are the worse parents in the world. The bible simply means to follow through with the discipline, as children need guidence it is one of the ways you show love for your children and prepare them to be adults.

For this to be justified in the Bible the Bible would have to say something like Use the Rod and kill the child for that is what these people did. I doubt that any discipline these people “gave” their children was out of love. I hope both go to jail for a very long time if not forever, and while in jail find the true meaning of what it is to be a Christian. Meanwhile for those that want to maintain that these people were following Biblical teachings I challange you to find even one Christian pastor that would agree that the level of abuse this girl suffered was justified and Christian in nature.

  3. Nice try at deflection , one of the more used tactics of muslims is to try and divert the effcts of truth from islam by blaming someone else. It is called “tu quoque” and the minute I see it I know the debater has not got a leg to stand on. Somebody isn’t reading the links provided and if they are, they are dismissing them out of hand.

Worldwide Trend in Honor KIllings http://www.meforum.org/2646/worldwide-trends-in-honor-killings

Read it and weep. But of course , many of you already know this although you will argue to the death that it is absolutely not true. If you accepted the truth and used your energy to change this a lot of good, innocent muslim female lives could be saved. But we all know how islam feels about females, don’t we?

  4. This is simply an attempt to make to disguise the real nature of Islam.
