Inas Kadri was assaulted at Sheridan Centre in Mississauga last year while she went shopping with her young children. (CBC)

A Muslim woman from Mississauga, Ont., who had her niqab pulled from her face at a local mall, says her young children no longer feel secure with only her nearby.

Inas Kadri, whose assault at Sheridan Centre in Mississauga was caught on a security camera, spoke to CBC News on Tuesday as she awaits the sentencing of the woman who attacked her.

Kadri was shopping with her three-year-old son and two-year-old daughter when she was approached by two women. One of the women began swearing at her, about her religion and her veil, telling her, “Leave our country. Go back to your country,” Kadri said.

The woman can be seen in the video grabbing Kadri’s veil and pulling her off-camera. The attacker walked away while Kadri ran for help.

“Being attacked for no reason — for no reason — that’s something difficult,” she said.

Kadri’s victim impact statement reads, in part, that, “My kids don’t feel secure with me alone, and always prefer to have someone bigger in size than me to feel safe.”

The accused, Rosemarie Creswell, pleaded guilty after the video was played in court.

When CBC News spoke to Creswell on the phone, she admitted to pulling off the veil but insisted it was all just a misunderstanding, before hanging up mid-interview.

Kadri believes the attack was motivated by hate, which could bring a stiffer sentence.

York University law professor Faisal Kutty, who is Muslim, will watch for the judge’s sentencing Friday with interest.

“As Canadians in a multicultural, liberal, democratic society, I think we need to send a clear message and I hope the judge does so,” he said.

Kadri said she won’t stop wearing her face veil no matter what anyone else says or does.

“Not my father, not my husband, not no one at all,” she said. ” It’s me, and it’s my choice.”

  1. its sad crap like this that make me imbarrassed to have white skin i feel like taking a torch to myself and burning it all off

  2. The Creswell woman’s guilt was getting to her during the interview. The fact that she attacked a Muslim who was minding her own business demonstrates that she has no sense.

In fact, she’s fortunate to have attacked such a passive Muslim! Had she attacked my wife, for example (who is a Black belt in Tae Kwon Do), Creswell would have been running for security….IF she could run at that point!

But people like her tend be be like most other savage animals: they know who to pick with and who to leave alone.

  3. This is non sense. I hope she gets 3 years of prison term and $10,000 fine paid to me. That would be a good sentence.

Well thanks to the Western government for their wars for “oil democracy” that have created all these hatreds, a big thank also to the Media for the negative feed backs and lies about Islam and Muslims.

I guess we are going to see more similar attacks like this one on Muslims.

Well according to the Media and some key racists such as Pamela Geller, the Muslims are here to kill every ones, so if some non Muslims react back, then their actions are only human responses.

So I would say reverse the sentence and let the woman walk free, it is not her fault, she is being fed with so much hatred through the media. I guess People like Pamela Geller are inciting hatred so why on earth the supposed new law on hate incitement is not applied on her, or it only applies to Muslims?
Can someone tell me if you know the answer? I am not a lawyer so I can not tell

  4. The woman should not have done this, but in western culture, hiding one’s identity is a no no. It does not signal modesty, but criminal intent. It looks aggressive.

  5. Was this lady a convert? In that case she knows that covering one’s face can be construed as a provocation and she maybe was trying to see if she could irritate somebody and thus prove her worth to her new religion.

    Games, you know. Games.

  6. I applaud this woman for her bravery, and what she did.

When I see a ghost walking down the street, covered in a rag, and it’s not Haloween, all I can think about is 9/11, and how these extremist people are responsible for it.

If they so much want to follow their religion, why don’t they stay in Pakistan? We don’t need them.

If they want to come here and live in freedom, then stop covering the face.

It is insulting to us Canadians to see these people walking down the street with a covered face.

Not to mention, wearing a disguise over your face is a crime.

  7. to anon: Wearing a niqab in public is not a crime in Canada, much less any sort of “provocation,” nor does it “signal aggressive intent.” Might want to brush up on your law. An elementary-level logic class might also benefit you.

  8. @anon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hfYJsQAhl0 wow in both of the things you said there is so much shear stupid “so hiding ones identity is a no no and a sign of criminal intent” hilarious because your using the screen name “anon” which I take it is short for anonymous so if hiding ones identity is frowned upon then I guess every single person who comments on the internet or plays online games is suspect of criminal intent including you considering alot of people use fake names on there, second are you seriously taking the whole “she planned it argument” so this woman who was minding her own buisness somehow planned or was trying to provoke people when she was shopping with her children was somehow provoking an attack by well just existing but yeah I forgot muslims can never be victims http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=129211.

  9. The face veil itself isn’t actually required by core Islam, but it is a common cultural piece of clothing among Muslims. If that is how this woman feels she can best follow the rules of modesty for her religion, it shouldn’t be seen as provocative. If someone finds it provocative, then that to me signals a dislike and distrust for Muslims that borders on hatred. Also, the idea of the face veil is well enough known that I doubt anyone can fairly call it a sign of criminal intent, especially just walking in the mall with her children. Otherwise someone walking in plain sight in the cold of winter with a ski mask could be suspected of criminal intent.

  10. “”Was this lady a convert? In that case she knows that covering one’s face can be construed as a provocation and she maybe was trying to see if she could irritate somebody and thus prove her worth to her new religion.””

    @anon

Ain’t that just typical, if the victim is Muslim, blame the victim! Would you have blamed the Jewish victims of SA attacks in Nazi Germany too, or is it just Muslims who deserve punishment? Jerk!!

  11. I think the hijab in the west might be a religious compulsion/political theater, but the nikab is a game. All dress is theater imho.

  12. The veil puller foolishly let herself be provoked.

  13. anon,

our women will cover until we meet god, regardless if your feelings are hurts or not. I guess the christian nuns should be careful too since they cover pretty much like the hijab. I really would have loved to see your comment then.

  14. I do not think God cares if your head is covered or not. No one should grab a person, the grabber was in the wrong.

Those women who are dressed “incorrectly” in muslim locales are likely to get more than their feelings hurt.

  15. @Anon

What is the meaning of incorrectly? and for your information women are supposed to cover so that Men do not look at them, If I put you in front of a christian nun and a next to her Pamela Anderson, Yeah I guess you would be looking at the nun. I guess you got the message.

Now going back to your magic word “incorrectly”, I wonder how you would feel if your own wife or daughter’s job was to be in bikini on the front pages of those motorbike or sport vehicle magazines that you normally see on top of the shelves.

Now according to us that i incorrectly and at the same time degrading the values of women and considered sex objects.

  16. Remember that lady dressed in pants and green veil in where was it Khartoum? They were going to flog her for her outfit. She defied them.

Iranian lady whose headgear fell off in public – thousand dollar fine and 25 lashes.

Most western women dress somewhere between the nun and Pamela Anderson.

Face veil is indefensible in the west.

So what do men look at then? Ohter men? Little boys?

  17. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8147329.stm

    salim,

so are you saying that the “islamophobic bloggers” and their writtings and the media are partly responsible for this woman’s actions?

  18. Afghan lady detained because socks weren’t thick enough.

Saudi schoolgirls famously not allowed to escape burning school.

The grabber may have read islamophobic blogs on the other hand, she may have simply reacted culturally to the mask. A mask is a no no in the west.

If a nikabi is a convert, she would know this. I still say it is an attempt to get attention, even negative attention, to prove her worth to her new religion.

  19. Salim, this phrase of yours: “for your information women are supposed to cover so that Men do not look at them”

So is it your idea that all women should follow islamic rules or else? Do you think men should play with other men and/or little boys until they marry?

In the US masks, unless Hallowen or carnival, used to be against the law. They may not be a crime now, but they are culturally negative.

Most people are anonymous on the net. Hell yes the muslims are here to kill us. I sometimes wonder, are muslims listening and reading what other muslims are saying and doing? Really no mystery here.

  20. m2

Who is Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein??? Do I know if he is a liar? if he really exist? or because Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein said it so i absorb it blindly?
Hell NO. I have been so to many islamic countries and never seen a woman being lashed for wearing a pair of pants. Sorry m2 but the article you sent is not holly! so from what I know to what this person is saying, I am not swallowing this!! sorry buddy! Go to Morroco, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Middles eastern countries and tell me if there have been similar stories.

Now assuming that happened, In Florida if you wear low level jeans and your boxers are shown then be ready for a fine! I guess those in power do what ever they wish, we have no control. Is this from Christianity? I guess I need to say Christianity is forcing us to hide the color of our boxers.

    @anon,
your level is no match and quite low, no need to answer you, I do not need to call you a Jerk for lying to your teeth. the points you brought are so stupid and childish! Hey I am sorry but anybody would call you as such for your last comments:

“Most people are anonymous on the net. Hell yes the muslims are here to kill us. I sometimes wonder, are muslims listening and reading what other muslims are saying and doing? Really no mystery here”.

Wow now Muslims are here to murder you!!! You are a piece of work!!!
I guess if you go to ER make sure you do a survey and check the doctors religious beliefs before you are treated! I guess you have been seriously brain washed to beyond economical repair! you need to get a life!

    your comment:

“So is it your idea that all women should follow islamic rules or else?”

Or else what? Allah is the judge, Men as women all commit sins, and when we refuse to obey a command then it is a sin. so my answer to your comment, is that the women who do not cover as islam says then on judgement day Allah either forgives them or punish them. Simple!!

“Do you think men should play with other men and/or little boys until they marry?”

For the above statement “DO I THINK??” I can only mark you as an uneducated person with low level comments. I guess you are a JERK!

  21. Salim, the story of Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein has been extensively discussed on the net.

These stories of women’s legal absurdities are what you get under theocratic modes.

We can’t go by our personal experiences, I don’t know any criminals but I know my country has them.

Long before Spencer, Gellar, 9/11, muslims had developed a rep for vicious intolerance. In churches, they have been following the stories of persecution for years.

There are a couple of people calling themselves anon on this site.

  22. I hope this site will start using a logging system!

  23. salim,

“Who is Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein???” appearently a sudanesse woman sentenced to lashes for wearing trousers. “Do I know if he is a liar? if he really exist?” first i think it’s a woman. is she a liar, i don’t know maybe. but i find the bbc to be a creditable news source. don’t you? could be a made up story, then again anything could be made up? so let me see if i’ve got this straight “or because Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein said it so i absorb it blindly?” ok fair enough. i think skepticism is good. but your saying that you don’t believe everything you read? so a 2009 bbc report is to be questioned, but a guy who says he talked to angels 1400 years ago is “holy”. ok, i love ya man you crack me up to no end.

not sure were in florida you speak of. i live in pinellas county and i see guys walking around with their pants below their butts all the time. maybe polk county or northern florida? they are pretty bible beltish. i do remember a story out of louisianna about a town trying to pass such an ordinance. anyways “Christianity is forcing us to hide the color of our boxers” yes they are and they should be stopped. see that is one of the worst problems with demorcacy, the tyranny of the majority on the minority, especially at the county or municiple levels. that maybe why some people support these anti-sharia laws at the state level. unfortunately the supreme court left obscenity laws up to “local community standards”. so if a county in michigan became 60% muslim they may arguee that a woman in a bikini is obscene according to their community standards.

you say “Allah is the judge,…either forgives them or punish them. Simple!!” really? so there is no “crime” or sin that anyone should punished on earth for? not sure what school of islamic jurisprudance you follow? i thought the point of sharia was to create a “just” kingdom here on earth. thus the rise of the (rightly guided) caliphate.

    “Immutability of God’s will
Although there are many different interpretations of sharia, and differing perspectives on each interpretation, there is consensus among Muslims that sharia is a reflection of God’s will for humankind. Sharia must therefore be, in its purest sense, perfect and unchanging.[51] The evolution or refinement of sharia is an effort to reflect God’s will more perfectly.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharia

  24. perhaps these guy’s fiqh is derived from the 24th surah. if you are suppossed to lash fornicators 100 times, and women scantly clad leads men to look at them, leading them into temptation to fornicate, then best to lash an “inmodestly” dressed woman. you know for everyone’s good.

    http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=http%3A//www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D-xef384fWFs%26oref%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%25

    perfection or torture?????????????

Surat An-Nūr (The Light) – سورة النور بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
    24:1
سورة أنزلناها وفرضناها وأنزلنا فيها آيات بينات لعلكم تذكرون
[This is] a surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember.
    24:2
الزانية والزاني فاجلدوا كل واحد منهما مائة جلدة ولا تأخذكم بهما رأفة في دي الله إن كنتم تؤمنون بالله واليوم الآخر وليشهد عذابهما طائفة من المؤمنين
The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah , if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

  25. “Al-Hussein was arrested during a raid at a restaurant in Khartoum in July for wearing a pair of green slacks which she later wore in the court hearings.

Ten other women arrested along with al-Hussein have already been whipped for their offence.

Al-Hussein and two others decided to appeal in protest of Article 152 of the Sudanese penal code, which decrees up to 40 lashes for anyone “who commits an indecent act which violates public morality or wears indecent clothing”.”

perhaps you will find this a more credible source.

    http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2009/09/200998152754685257.html

  26. People, please understand that anon is trolling. Please do not feed the Trolls.

  27. Qasim

Your right. “abasa wa tawala” i love that surah man. The one sin of the prophet and were following up on it, trying to make an ignorant person learn. News flash they’ll never get it. God closed their hearts, its done. You can only say peace be with you and move on.

  28. This from Ahmed over at brownpundits.com:
The Koran is above all a book of war – a call to butcher non-Muslims (2:191, 3:141, 4:91, 5:3), to roast them (4:56, 69:30-69:32), and to cause bloodbaths amongst them (47:4). Jews are compared to monkeys and pigs (2:65, 5:60, 7:166), while people who believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God must according to the Koran be fought (9:30 [9:29]). …It is still possible, even today, for Muslims to view the Koran, which they regard as valid for all time, as a license to kill.

And that is exactly what happens. The Koran is worded in such a way that its instructions are addressed to Muslims for eternity, which includes today’s Muslims. This in contrast to texts in the Bible, which is formulated as a number of historical narratives, placing events in a distant past.

The point is that throughout centuries the Text has continued to provide the basis for an activity, the Jihad, that is now deemed deeply inhuman, from the perspective of current humanity which operates, at least on paper, beyond race, religion or creed, and color. There are no slave markets either.

Howzat for a troll. The ONE sin of the prophet? There is none so blind as he who will not see.

  29. Try reading the Bible. I’m sure it can match the Koran violence for violence. In the Old Testament in particular God repeatedly orders the Israelites to slaughter men, women and children for the crime of not being Israelites. And let’s not forget the Christian Crusades.

  30. @anon
“The Koran is worded in such a way that its instructions are addressed to Muslims for eternity, which includes today’s Muslims. This in contrast to texts in the Bible, which is formulated as a number of historical narratives, placing events in a distant past.” okay try telling that to these guys who take the the bible verse “thou not suffer a witch to live” quite literally http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/18/african-children-denounce_n_324943.html

  31. m2

“so a 2009 bbc report is to be questioned, but a guy who says he talked to angels 1400 years ago is “holy”. ok, i love ya man you crack me up to no end.”
Please try to get a copy of the book by Maurice Bucaille the title is the science, the bible and the holy Koran, Check the miracles in the Koran.

Now Mohamed peace be upon him was classified as the most influential man in history since his ideology or I would call it the religion of Islam that was sent by Allah still followed by about 3 billions people and the number is on the increase. ?Buddy, Mohamed was a prophet peace be upon him, and as you can see the religion of Allah is protected by Allah and more people are embracing it
Now all the other ideological men in history their ideas or what they were calling for were wiped out as soon as those people passed away. I hope you can see the point I am making.

Well regarding the color of boxers, I guess that was the same news

please read I was only reporting what I had read, please check the following:

    http://102jamzorlando.radio.com/2011/03/18/low-sagging-pants-in-school-now-against-the-law-in-florida/

  32. As soon as Jesus passed away, the religion of Christianity grew in a spectacular manner which has continued to this day.

Florida is working on the low sagging pants thing. I would like to see the naked gay parade thing be done away with, the naked butt beach thing also and the guys that do South Park should go join a monastery of the silent type.

  33. After L. Ron Hubbard died, his religion, scientology, still kept growing. People put their souls in the hands of L. Ron Hubbard. Humans are strange creatures.

  34. M2, (and all the other blatant liars out there)

2:191, 3:141, refer to the disbelievers of Mecca who specifically fought the Muslims simply for their faith. 4:91, 5:3,is referring to backstabbers, hypocrites, who tried to destroy Muslims from within. 4:56 is punishment God will give to disbelievers, not Muslims punishing disbelievers, 69:30-69:32 referring to first battle Muslims fight against ppl of Mecca, “and the same with(47:4).2:65, 5:60, 7:166 is not describing Jews as pigs and monkeys, he is just giving them their punishment for breaking the Sabbath even after they took a pledge with God. God also warns them in the Bible not to break the Sabbath.

    Biggest lie you mentioned:
“while people who believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God must according to the Koran be fought(9:30 [9:29])”

Really? Perhaps you should mention these verses as well:

“Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you.” 9:4

“So long as they are true to you, be true to them. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty.” 9:7

“if they break their pledges after their treaty (hath been made with you) and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief – Lo! they have no binding oaths – in order that they may desist.” 9:12

“Will ye not fight a folk who broke their solemn pledges, and purposed to drive out the messenger and did attack you first?” 9:13

Anyone who read between the lines will understand, but you don’t because you are a liar. But don’t worry, God also mentions ppl like you will not succeed either. The verse you quoted was most likely meant for the Jews (banu Qurayzah) who made treaties with the Muslims, then stabbed them in the back. Don’t give me BS about punishing traitors. Committing treason in America gives the death penalty.

  35. Whoops, the above message in meant for anon, it is just becuz M2 and anon are like brothers throwing out the same words. And by the way anon, Jesus was all for stoning. Read Matthew 5:17-20 and you will c he did not come to change the laws, he came to enforce them. Jews did not like it either so they corrupted their scriptures too.

  36. The quote I posted was not mine, it was as I said done by Ahmed at brownpundits.com.

I see various explanations for what was said and done in regard to these verses. Anyone who “reads between the lines” of any scriptures is apt to come up with differing interpetations. That is why theocracy is so fatal.
It imposes one interpretation to the detriment and death of peace, intellect and joy.

  37. salim,

i’ll see if i can check it out next time i’m in the library. yeah i think you are wrong on the ideaologies die with the men. marxism is still around. i think there are quite a few chinesse who follow confucianism or taoism? and if you want to see some people who follow a dead sciencfiction writer’s ideaology, come down to clearwater and visit the fort harrison hotel. it’s the spiritual world center for scientologists. all the people downtown who look like they are in the navy. anyways regardless of who is the most influential person, or who can garner the most followers. appearently most the people of the world still feel a need to “find something”. i personally think you live you die, that’s it. that is why i value my freedom in this life most, and do not want to see religious people impose what they think it god’s will. thus my “obsession” as mr bennet calls it with the stoning, and lashing. did you see donna’s and corey’s comments. all of these ancient texts have outlived their usefullness. we should no longer have to scare people into moral behavior with the threat of eternal damnation. yes at one time they greatly improved things, but as you can see they are now becoming the tools for destruction. they are used to justify the immoral actions that they claim to be against. religion is the new global tribalism. especially between the abrahamics.

  38. mr. bennet,

“Jesus was all for stoning.” one more reason not to be a christian. right catt?

  39. [2.6] Surely those who disbelieve, it being alike to them whether you warn them, or do not warn them, will not believe.
[2.7] Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing and there is a covering over their eyes, and there is a great punishment for them.
[2.8] And there are some people who say: We believe in Allah and the last day; and they are not at all believers.
[2.9] They desire to deceive Allah and those who believe, and they deceive only themselves and they do not perceive.
[2.10] There is a disease in their hearts, so Allah added to their disease and they shall have a painful chastisement because they lied.

    it’s not anon’s fault, someone gave s/he a disease.

  40. M2,
The Quran says that a seal has been placed on the hearts of the disbelievers. Like you quoted in 2:10, God put on those disbelievers because they chose to lie instead of telling the truth, not simply becuz he hates them. 2:8 refers to hypocrites, the ppl who say they believe but don’t really believe. The description of hypocrites in the Quran describes them as fearing man more than God. Loving this world more than the next. Breaking the commandments while claiming to follow them. Even a hypocrite Muslim will go to hell. God does not oppress anyone in the least. They will receive their due for everything they did, good or bad.

    Quran 2:74, read it?
Their hearts were hardened because they refused to believe in a resurrection b4 their very eyes! It was their own fault.

“Relate to them the story of the man to whom We sent Our ayaat , but he passed them by: So Satan followed him up and he went astray. If it had been Our Will, We should have elevated him with our ayaat; but he inclined to the earth and followed his own vain desires…” Quran 7:175-6

Note then ending of this quote. He loved the earth, and chose to follow his own desires instead of guidance. God does not guide those who do not want to be guided. The same thing happened to the Pharaoh who oppressed the Hebrews.
The Quran mentions how God instructed Moses to go to the Pharaoh to correct him.
    Quran 20:42-44
Go, thou and thy brother with my ayaat, and slacken not, either of you, in keeping Me in remembrance. Go, both of you to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds; but speak to him mildly; perchance that he may take warning or fear (Allah).

The ending “perchance he may take warning” means Pharaoh still had a chance to correct his ways.

But when Our ayaat came to them, that should have opened their eyes, they said: “This is sorcery manifest!” And they rejected those (ayaat) in iniquity and arrogance, though their own souls were convinced thereof: so see what was the end of those who acted corruptly! (27:13-4)

Even though their souls are convinced, they can’t bring themselves to believe. They are deaf, dumb, and blind Quran 2:18

  41. Non muslims are not living in denial of truth. Their souls are not saying yes, this is the truth and to hell with it.

Believing that is one way muslims give themselves permission to kill us.

  42. m. bennet,

so is there any punishment for hypocrites on this earth? i don’t believe in god therefore i don’t fear god. does that make me a hypocrite?
