Lowe’s pulls advertising from TLC’s ‘All-American Muslim’

(CNN) — Lowe’s has pulled its advertising from the reality TV show “All-American Muslim,” which the retail store called a “lightning rod.”

“All-American Muslim” is an eight-part series that follows five Muslim families living in Dearborn, Michigan.

“Lowe’s has received a significant amount of communication on this program, from every perspective possible. Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views. As a result we did pull our advertising on this program,” the company said in a statement Saturday.

“We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance.”

The conservative Florida Family Association, which is pushing advertisers to drop “All-American Muslim,” cheered Lowe’s decision. The group called the TLC show “propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.”

But the company’s decision was decried by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and at least one of the show’s cast members.

Both CAIR and Shadia Amen-McDermott, who is featured on the show, posted links on their Facebook pages to a petition, calling on advertisers to continue their support.

Late Saturday night, the petition had some 2,300 signatures.

“This is NOT about standing up for All-American Muslim – This is about Standing Up Against Bigotry and Hatred in this Country Founded on Peace, Justice, and Equality. Let’s Stand United against Bigotry,” Amen-McDermott wrote.

  1. Here’s the petition they are talking about. This is complete lunacy. Really it is time to stop this thing.

  2. This is complete lunacy. Really it is time to stop this thing.

  3. I saw muslim posts protesting that the show was about shia and therefore not real muslims.

  4. The last time I looked companies could advertise or not advertise on shows as they see fit. The show is generating controversy which most companies seek to avoid, which could be a reason to remove ads from the show. All American Muslim has also lost almost half of it audience since the premiere, which could be another reason companies are dropping their ads from the show. The fact that the complaints about Lowes have come from CAIR an unsavory group linked to the Islamic terrorist group HAMAS diminishes the credibility of these complaints.

  5. The most clear and present danger to the liberties of the citizens of the United States come from the Senate House of the US Congress————- attached to the National Defense act now up for a vote is a special added provision written by John McCain that takes away almost ALL of our freedoms—– this provision allows for the government to arrest and detain without charges any person they ‘suspect’ could be a threat —– no due process. It goes on to explain that because these people are seen as a threat to America they can be tortured to extract a confession—– and that the government may at it’s choosing turn these citizens over to ANY other government or entity—- in other words…. if someone does not like you, you may be captured by our government and sold as a slave to anyone they choose.

  6. Advertisers hate controversy, they don’t want their name attached to anything causing raised eyebrows. The show might do ok on pbs.

US drops due process in face of threats and time of war. Small examples – Jessee James, Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde.

I think the gov. would protect muslims. It is the public that would go gunning for the muslims.

  7. Could add Alawki to that list. This is the Wild West, not the Tame West.

  9. I read this and I thought about how Muslim protests/threats managed to coerse hotels from allowing the Geller conference due to its subject matter. Now we have this and the shoe is on the other foot with an organization folding in favor of the anti-Islam crowd. I do not think the show will be cancelled because of the lack of Lowe’s support but it does provide a good backdrop to showcase the value of free speech be it speech you like or do not like.

  10. home depot is better anyway 🙂

  11. Hey CATT,
You better check to see if you are in your own house now that you have come out of it!
You are listening to propaganda, just lay there quietly some one will be there soon to help you, no one will arest you under McCaines bill and besides no one is going to extract any recipes from you. John McCaine is 100% against water boarding even if it if for the best potato salad in the country.

But CATT I am so glad you came here to the rant about Lowes to tell us of your fears.. nite CATT

  12. First thing I will do: Watch the show one night. Write down the names of every advertiser. Avoid every company advertising on the show at any cost.

Second thing I will do: Shop at Lowes every time I get the chance.

Side note: So happy I bought my new fridge and dishwasher from Lowes. Good for Lowes management for taking a stand.

Have your say!
