COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A Muslim death row inmate has settled a lawsuit that accused the Ohio prison system of denying him meals prepared according to Islamic law while providing kosher meals to Jewish prisoners.

Ohio had previously decided to remove all pork products from prison menus in response to the lawsuit, though inmates weren’t seeking a ban on pork.

Details of the settlement announced Wednesday afternoon weren’t released. Neither the inmate’s lawyer or the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction would comment.

The state argued as recently as last month that providing the meals, known as halal, could bankrupt the state’s food service system because thousands of inmates have declared themselves Muslim.

Attorneys for Abdul Awkal (ab-DUHL’ AW’-kuhl) and a second inmate argued that the state was exaggerating the cost.

  1. i am happy to see this improvement in the food, it does not concern this one inmate but thousands, and the treatment must be equal if they provide Kosher then they can provide Muslims special food too. Just wait though, there is pork in everything.

  2. Give them all peanut butter or bologna sandwiches, they are in jail not a freakin day camp.

  3. They’re still human beings.

  4. Give them the kosher food – it’s basically the same thing.

  5. How exactly does food need to be prepared, acording to Muslim law? Just out of interest/curiosity. The article didn’t say.

  6. Oops, Islamic Law. Thanks in advance for the info.

  7. It has to do with the way an animal is slaughtered, no gelatin, no pork products, etc.

  8. The animal must be hand slaughtered toward the Kaba and you must say” in the name of God” while cutting.

  9. They get a whole new country and he can’t get a humanely prepared meal? Sad day.

  10. Alyssa: It’s almost identical to Kosher, only that an Islamic prayer is said and the meat is slaughtered while facing the Ka’ba. Honestly I don’t think that they are in a position to demand kosher/halal and neither do I think that the prison system is in a position to accommidate it.

  11. halal food is not that complicate and hard request, they re in prison is a punishement and justice but they still human and have rights as physiological needs, food is one of them, and its not big different to what eat jewish, plus could be less expensive than other kind of food..

  12. Honestly, prisons have vegetarian meals. If they wanna save money, offer veg and non-veg and get rid of the rest. They are inmates who were convicted. They lose certain rights.

  13. Kosher meets this requirement.

  14. One of my Hindu vegetarian friends was treated the same while unjustly imprisoned.

  16. Stay out of trouble isn’t that in the religious rules? You broke the rule , now eat or don’t eat vegetarians, muslims, jews anyone with a food problem stay the hell out of jail. It costs many times more to house inmates than if they just followed their religious teachings.

  18. If someone is on death row and killed someone, they should get vegetarian or not veggie. Kosher is “halal” for us (halal means allowed). However, when you kill one person it is the same as killing all of humanity (Quran). They should not get fancy food. Use that money to help the poor and prevent future crime.

  20. The guy was convicted. Before trial let them have good food. Innocent until proven guilty. Once guilty, they can eat cheap food.

  22. even in dept of corrections, religous rights are acknowledged. Thats why he won the lawsuit. Guilt or innocence is irrelevant.

  23. Some people take a topic and run all kinds of directions with it, so annoying.

  24. really? i have compassion but…really? i gotta say…really? this is a story worth covering?…

  25. i believe in the Torah…God said an eye for an eye…if you kill then u will be killed. So many in prison demanding their rights like theyre some law abidding citizen. Its pathetic. The death penalty makes sense.
