White House Apologizes For Quran Burning

WASHINGTON — The White House is apologizing for the burning of Muslim holy books in a pile of garbage at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan.

Press secretary Jay Carney says it’s a “deeply unfortunate incident” and doesn’t reflect the respect the U.S. military has for the religious practices of the Afghan people.

Carney echoed military officials Tuesday in saying that the Quran burning at Bagram Air Field happened unintentionally, and that an investigation was being undertaken to understand why it did and ensure it didn’t happen again.

A Western military official said the Qurans were removed from a library at a nearby detention center because they contained extremist messages. Carney didn’t address those specifics, referring questions to defense officials.

He said the administration was following the matter closely.

  1. At least they speak up and take responsibility.

  2. I think it was intentional and meant to be disrespectful. As to alleged “extremist messages”, the US is producing those by its actions.

  3. As they should.

  4. blah, blah, blah

  5. If the military wont, the CoC should

  6. after this long you could think we’d learn a little sensitivity

  7. How many times do the yanks do thay? Sick of their pathetic useless apologies!

  8. I’m sick of our apologies too. There’s a lot of them to be handed out.

  9. Burning the Qur’an is the last thing the US should do if it ever wishes to win the hearts and minds of Muslims. But we have right wingers in this country who consider that to be “political correctness” and think the burning the Qur’an is some sort of rite of passage, while burning the American flag is sacrilegious to them.

  10. Too late!

  11. too late :)

  12. Bravo Harrison H Elfrink

  13. Why was it in their possession anyway? The world knows how sensitive out holy book is and i think they did this on purpose to ignite a reaction, fantastic job US! :/

  14. Our*

  15. i guess thats all we get, an apology, one person says anything about a jew or zionist and all hell breaks loose. they are illegally spying on the students in broad daylight with no repremand from any government official, IN FACT they go on tv and publicly DEFEND their illegal actions! might as well move to canada now cuz sooner or later we’re all gonna be sent to muslim party city in cattle cars.

  16. respecting other people s faiths and traditions should have been learnt already (they have been there long enough )

  17. Well actually it is the proper way to dispose of things with Allah’s name…

  18. Holy Crud we really did that? Who threw them in the trash, why if someone knew they were there was it not reported sooner. This is horrible.

  19. good action for inter-faith harmony.

  20. Simply know that any American citizen, soldier, or otherwise, for burning the Qur’an or committing acts of violence against Muslims is no better than the terrorists who burn the American flag or commit acts of violence against others.

To me, both are equal as traitors not only to America but humanity.

  21. I don’t really understand why people are so worked up about it. You cannot throw a Qur’an that is worn and can no longer be used into the trash, you must burn it!

  22. The damage has already been done. Now, we can only take solace in Washingtons accountability and apology, and in making sure this does not happen again.

  23. I am the first one to yell foul on things but ok I have 2 thoughts. 1, the us military is dumb but not that dumb I don’t think this was intentional ….or…..2, if this was intentional then it is some sort of action meant to provoke reaction from ex. Iran or Assad at the behest of israel, because the usa is beholden to those wackjobs, to give reason for the next war. ….I’m really hoping 1 is the right answer because I really hope the usa is not that dumb and or menacing

  24. I’m interested to hear that burning is the proper way of disposing things with Allah’s name. I’m Greek Orthodox and we also have some specific ways of disposing of holy things that can’t be kept: icons, things with holy oil on them, etc. Fire is one of those ways. I thought of this when I first heard the news story but seriously doubted that this was what was going on in this situation.

  25. Yeah and did we get any apoligies on 9/11 yeah no I’m not saying I hate all muslims just the ones that did 9/11 I think we should just back out and leave them alone and make it so they can’t come here and we can’t go there other than for our oil and w.e they get from us

  26. I wonder how we’d feel if Holy Bibles were disposed of the same way, in a pile of garbage, by foreigners….I can just see a livid Santorum, agitating his followers in the name of God. There is no difference. Both are considered holy books and the word of God by their followers.

  27. Oops! I hate when I accidently burn something that I had no intention of setting on fire!! Blah! blah! blah! It is just another example of how disrespectful we are of others and then wonder why “they” do not like us!!

  29. It was probably deliberate on the lowest level, some idiotic, pimple-faced 19 year old bigot. To hold US Forces at large responsible is stupid and irresponsible. An act of bigotry by an idiot has been politicized by some Taliban-sympathizing opportunist who wants to make Americans look bad. Well, it sure worked. In the long run, however, making waves in the media is just using Islam for political gain, an evil act.

  31. FYI a Muslim would never burn or desecrate the Holy Bible or Torah because they have God’s name in them and anything that mentions God is to be highly respected. Unfortunately some people of other religions do not feel the same way!!

  33. Angela- If I am not mistaken (and please, brothers and sisters correct me if I am), we are to burn it or bury it. Hold on, lemme just look it up to verify insha’Allah

  34. Angela- If I am not mistaken (and please, brothers and sisters correct me if I am), we are to burn it or bury it. Hold on, lemme just look it up to verify insha’Allah

  35. From what I read, it is indeed correct to burn or bury it, among other ways. However, there are more requirements (such as wrapping it in a cloth, and burying it in a place that is allowed, etc.)

  37. If USIers had any respect for people they would start by apologizing for the wars in Irag and Afghanistan and Libya and for the threats and murders committed in Syria and Iran. Further they would stop supporting the Zionists and return Palestine to its rightful owners the Palestinians. Oh and they would put Bush and Obama in prison for crimes against humanity, now that would be an apology that would win hearts and minds!

  39. unintentionally?
    Well thats the lamest excuse!

  40. Angela and Isa- The proper way to dispose of the Quran is burial or releasing it downstream into a river.

  41. Americans and there allies are retarded end of story. Keep exporting FEAR AND HATE , its the only thing you do.

  42. Thanks Reed. I was horrified over some people giving out their own fatwas on Facebook.

  43. Muslims not burning bibles? Muslims demanded the destruction of bibles in 2009 because they were written in local languages within the Afgan nation. As a result the Military burned them to appease Muslim anger. I guess not all Muslims respect the Bible in the same way they wish us to respect the Koran. From what I understand Saudi Arabia burns bibles if a person has more copies than needed for personal use. Lets face it Muslims do burn bibles or demand their destruction for numerous reasons. If I stood on my front lawn and burned a bible do you think Muslims would riot all over the world in protest? NO they will not, they have no concern for the bible they only have it for the Koran and all they ask is that all people, regardless of religion, have that same respect for the Koran. Well good luck with that wish, I do not burn Korans but I am about as concerned about it as the average Muslim is when they hear about a bible being burned or abused in some way.

  44. And the candidates of the Bull Goose Looney (AKA Republican) Party are going ape-snot over how Obama’s always apologising for America.

  45. Bibles were burned by the US military in Afghanistan and no Christians rioted. The Islamic Republic of Iran recently burned 300 Bibles and no Christians rioted. Sacred Buddhas were destroyed by Muslims in Afghanistan with the act filmed and shown on television. No Buddhists rioted.Muslims have little respect for those things that are sacred and holy to people of other faiths. So I see no reason why the US government is apologizing to irrational idiots,it appears a mistake was made so move on. People are tired of the irrational behavior of Muslims in general and Muslims in Afghanistan in particular.

  46. That is ridiculous! No way was that an accident. At least we’re apologizing, but those people involved in the burning should be court marshaled. There is no more “extremist material” in the Quran than there is in The Holy Bible. People need to read the text before judging it. I’m ashamed.

  47. to little, to late.

  48. It was said that tge Quran is NOT to be burnt!! FOR ANY REASON …old copies or not, the proper way is to bury or send out to sea as their faitg describes; just like the bible scrolls were buried to be found later. They also could have removed them from interment camp and given to poor children, This was a Reo ploy against Obama by A military person’s orders. to dispose knowing it wld spark fireworks. Yes Obama apologized what else can he do for other peoples (Reps) short-sided evilness, same behavior and disregard for other people in the World. But like Moses, they will not enter the promise land; w such pre-judgements. …that is God’s job who lives, dies or who stays on top!! Your day of judgement is coming soon!

  49. Apology not accepted!!

  50. I can’t believe the US even sunk to that level to begin with. No books should be burned. Yes, I realize that the proper way to dispose of the Qur’an is by burning it, but in this situation it’s the message they were trying to convey that is problematic.

  51. Hera

But thats just it. Were supposed to respect them. Churches and synagogues are seen as sanctuaries. Omar bin Al Khattab built a mosque across from a church so it wouldnt get torn down by zealots. Theyre both still in Jerusalem. And we believe in the Injeel (bible) and Torah in their old forms. While maybe now they are different, muslims would be punished by God for that. ^^

  52. Puerile, but not unexpected reaction.

  53. More idiocy. The books were already “descecrated” bc they were written in, plus they were Contraband. Leave it to the media to leave out details.

  54. Goran, what year was ‘Palestine” founded ? Where are it’s borders? That’s right. There was never such a place.

  55. Hm. Rachel.

Canaan. Thats when. It was known as Canaan back then, a region in Sham. (syria, Jordan, Palestine)Lol were made up? So Israel, named by a people, started in 1948 based on the exile of thousands, is real and has always existed.

    Ha

Tell that to my 117 year old Grandfather whose been alive since the Ottoman empire, before Jews, when did they take any interest in Canaan? Lol after Herzl encouraged a few of their most impressionable to take back whats theirs. Lol from genocide togenocide. Your native American. Im dissapointed in you.

Palestine belongs to Christian and Muslim Palestinians. We wouldnt have cared if the Jews came and chilled along side us because history proves we did. Omar bin Alkattab opened it up from under Roman ruleand the three abrahamic religions lived in peace. Empire went down. Crusades. Then Saladin opened it up again while Jews were freaking out about why Europe hated them so much. (why? I get Muslims cuz some of us are darker and you think we pulled the Towers and we speak languages besides English and Polish but Jews are blending in a lot better. I personally dont see why Europeans hated them so much. The Middle East was their only refuge.) but anyways, the problem isnt the Jews, its the fact that they took our homes, killed so many people, and basedtheir occupation on a BOOK. and when the Swedish dude in charge of the UN in the 40’s caught wind of the zionists’ plan, and tried to put a stop to it, he was mysteriously killed.

  56. Zionists don’t just want to “return” to their alleged homeland, they want to establish a national state that resembles an ancient kingdom.

It’s not about a human right to return to a homeland, but about power and control. That’s the reason of the conflict.
Just ask yourself, why Israel is rejecting the Palestinians’ right to return to the homes they were expelled in 1948. It has never been about the right to return, but all about a racist nationalist ideology.

And for “God is Love!” below, you couldn’t be more wrong about this. When, over the past 1400 years, did the Arabs fight the Jews over the Holy Land? Only after Zionism. So think about it.

Zionism has to be defeated for peace to prevail.

  57. A koran is burned and there should be an apology, however there;s no apologies from Muslims anywhere over killing and vandalism over burning Korans. Hypocrisy? Much.

  58. exporting fear and hate? that’s rich coming from a religion that dishes it out but just cant take it.

  59. Chris
Then what is it you call a muslim apologist.

For example. They burned qurans, they directly apologized. Some amgry impressionable muslim guy kills someone and I have to apologize? Me? Im a muslim whos never done anything like that but the world expects me to take the fall for hijackers, or suicide bombers, or radicals (which are all btw very much forbidden). Im sorry like i do wish itd stop but srsly if im not responsible y must i suffer?

  60. Actually Chris is right. The attitude seems to be: burn a pile of Christians alive, so what. Look at me crosseyed, hey I’m all over you about discrimination.

Obama has had ample opportunity to get out of Afghanistan, he didn’t so now we have this uproar, i really don’t think it is about a few Korans.

During the election campaign, I was amazed that the Dems would do their usual and put up a glamorous senator of very thin experience to be Pres. Supposedly he had a better team of economists than McCain.

  61. Anon
What I’m saying is that Muslims hrre shouldn’t get hell for this^^. do we fight it, disagree with it, yes. There are a lot of Muslims who hate the Middle East’s governments, but again why blame us again? Were not responsible

  62. And I agree its bad i dont like the anti non muslim attitude most governments have, it should stop we need the violence to end already, but im not Superman.

  63. Given Muslim reactions within various Muslim countries I do not believe the Government would have purposely burned those Korans. I do believe a soldier on the base made a decision he thought was correct since the books were being used to send messages and contained information not included within the average Koran. It was the wrong decision. Obama’s apology placed this issue on the front burner and the sheer ignorance of the Muslim hoards in the backwards countries is making this an issue from which Orphans are being made. Trying to help, change, befriend or whatever were doing in countries is simply an exercise in futility. These people do not want a better life, they like living under a government in which women are beheaded on soccer fields, women are forced to stay home, and religious zealots walk the streets with guns to make sure everyone follows their strict enforcement of faith. Our best option would be to pull out of these countries, and take our money with us. They can then evolve or devolve into the kind of religious theocracy they desire. We should, then, keep news outlets out of the country so that we do not have to watch programs like “Behind the Veil” and rouse our country to feelings of trying to protect anyone from their own ignorance.

We are about to do the same thing in Syria. We need to stay out of that country and if the government wants to kill off a huge percentage of its population, let them. If we go over to help, all of them will hate us including the ones we save. It is not worth spending 50 cents on the effort.

The people in these countries seem to be willfully ignorant and are most willing to use their religion as an excuse to kill people and destroy property. They give Islam a bad name and are a root cause of the mistrust many people feel about Muslims and the “Religion of Peace”.

  64. We know that Muslims believe that the Quran is a sacred text and one could always have done things better here and given the text decent treatment. But some perspective is clearly needed. Every day in Muslim- majority nations both Muslims and non-Muslims are being severely persecuted, with many of them under death threats for doing such “un-Islamic” things such as thinking critically.
Muslims in Western countries are of course not treated this way. And when an episode like this does occur, we have the president of the United States offering formal apologies.
Muslims correctly expect tolerance and respect from Westerners, but certainly are not showing it to non-Muslims living in their midst. Just look at the Copts in Egypt right now as but one example, or the Christian pastor in Iran condemned to hang for his “un-Islamic” beliefs.
This is all one-way traffic here. It’s going to take a long time for decent Muslims to overcome such behavior and make people see that “this is not them”.

  65. remember these are the same people that burn bibles and torahs in those fires too oops they dont want the jews to know they burn torahs? they wont learn until they are tossed out of office.

  66. China has leased part of Pakistan it seems, and Uzbekistan, or was it some other stan, has said it wants a go at Afghanistan. The Taliban had way too much support, I suppose because they were muslim, no matter how atrocious.

These countries will be taken over eventually if they can’t get their act together, or simply left to starve and/or fight to the death like the Congo. Syria says “the world has abandoned us” you betcha.

As far as apologies go, I like the one by Kira Davis.

I do not think the riots are over the Koran burning, that is just the excuse.

  67. Getting rid of Bashar Alassad is the first step in getting their act together. Theyre talking about Human Rights. You know if youve ever been to Syria theres a general peace amongst the people. Nonmuslims and muslims share nights on balconies drinking tea and chilling and covered women and uncovered ladies roam the streets freely.

  68. Elle, I have never been to Syria and I hope no American is forced to visit Syria or that we do not try to sell arms and “Win the peoples hearts and minds.” We need to let them solve their own problems as we should have done in Lybia and every other country there.

  69. Criley
Libya liberated itself, thank you very much. Its Iraq that needed the USs “help”
And Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Qatar, UAE, and ramallah are all very westernized not at all like Saudi Arabia, thank GOD. I would know because i have family scattered everywhere.

  70. Elle, the liberation in Libya faltered when it did not have air support. It was the air support that allowed the revolutionaries to defeat Libyan forces. Regardless of what happens I will pray that your family stays safe.

  71. Nobody seems to really “get” it! It’s all about (1) selling armaments and (2) OIL!!!

Have your say!
