Majority Whip Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) appeared on Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien to discuss the flare up of violence in Afghanistan.

Durbin says, “And understand, just go back to history a little bit to 9/11, President George W. Bush, I sure had my differences with him, but I thought he got it right, and he stuck with it through his presidency. He said our war is not with the religion of Islam. Our war is with those who would distort it and turn it into terrorism. And I think that was a bright spot kind of a guiding principle. It was adopted by President Obama. Now, listen to these Republican candidates for president. They’re at war with Islam.”

CNN Contributor Will Cain counters, “Senator Durbin, I haven’t heard one thing that backs up what you suggest. Just give me an example, how are they at war with Islam?

Referencing the Quran burnings, Durbin replies, “Newt Gingrich saying that the president is guilty of appeasement…. What you listen to is incendiary rhetoric coming out in a very delicate situation. Lives are at stake here. The president is showing leadership. The president is stepping up, trying to calm a situation. These three candidates are coming on television doing the opposite.”

Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien airs week mornings from 7-9am ET on CNN.

  1. EXCUSE ME, sir! Ron Paul is NOT at war with Islam. Please SPECIFY which candidates please. You don’t just get to pick the biggest jackasses!

  2. The three candidates (Santorum, Romney, Gingrich) who have criticized Obama for apologizing over a few burned books are exercising their right to free speech under the first amendment of the US Constitution.Surely Senator Durbin would not deny the candidates their right to criticize Islam and Obama. To deny them their right to speak freely about Islam would be the same as imposing sharia.A barbaric law code that punishes people with death for criticizing Islam. Durbin’s criticism of the GOP candidates is more about protecting Obama then anything else. As Obama has found himself on the wrong side of an important issue just as he stood in opposition to 70% of the American people when he supported the Ground Zero Mosque.

  3. Ron Paul 2012! End Islam phobia for good!

  4. I wonder who is at war with who???

Its the muslims that want to Jihad everybody!

  5. @Chiedu lol~ you’re so ignorant…

  6. who has always been in almost everyone’s else countries? who is spying almost every countries on earth? who is always at wars or part of wars? who is always into other countries affairs? who is among the few pot stirrers known to the world? who brought a war in Iraq based on lies (on this note, it’s no surprised if other countries and other matters have been lied about too)? – the US!

Why do others hate us? because we bully them, we lie about them, we want them to bow at everything we want them to do and say, we try to force the ‘western culture’ on other countries, we are forcing ‘democracy’ onto others when we abused the real democracy itself, we labeled and defined them as whatever we want, when we are no angels either…

So @Chiedu please look around carefully and refer to history… Who were the ones who killed the Africans and made them slaves? Who were the ones who created world war I & II? who were the ones that bombed Hiroshima & Nagasaki? who were the ones that killed the Indians (Now known as Native Americans) and stole their lands? Who were the ones that killed the Indians (Native Americans) for gold and silver? who were the ones that killed millions of innocent Iraqi civilians based on lies? Who were the ones that illegally took over Hawaii and made it as part of the US?… Muslims? the answer is NO, they were not the Muslims!

  7. Bush/Cheney never read the history of Afghanistan; what they did to Russia over the ten-year war. President Obama inherited the Afghanistan war and gave orders to SEALS to take out Osama bin Laden…and did they! The war was mishandled from the beginning; Bush/Cheney didn’t finish the job in Afghanistan because they were so anxious to steal Iraq’s oil and take out Saddam. Facta sunt potention verbis; “Facts are more powerful than words!”

  8. @Hera Actually, just because 70% of Americans think something, doesn’t mean it’s right. Obama was on the side of the Constitution–not surprising, seeing he was a Constitutional Law professor. If we based Presidential decisions based on popular vote, we’d never have had the civil rights movement. Criticizing an apology made to the President of Afghanistan based on actions our service people did that were wrong may be free speech–but it also shows that none of those candidates are ready to be President of the United States or understand the implications of such an office.@Hera Actually, just because 70% of Americans think something, doesn’t mean it’s right. 9. If Obama was Constitutional law professor he must understand the first amendment and the right to free speech. He also should re-read the part in the Constitution about freedom of religion as he is currently violating the religious rights of the Catholic Church.A group right here in America that is not rioting or killing people.

  10. We went in that hole in the wall excuse for a country and wiped out the tallyban and el quido. We also didn’t do enough to free the people from the mooselimb yoke. We need to move all forces north and east and cut off the terrorists flowing in from fudge pack-it-in-stan. The real enemy is izlame. The ideology of hate amd murder.

  12. Chris, we have no business in other counties, if someone invade us, raped us, killed us because we were christian, or God forbid, took a piss on a dead american soldier or burned the bible, how would you feel??? the war crimes that some, and I say “some” american soldiers commited are beyond sick, just think about for a minute….

  13. Chris, you have to go back to 2nd grade and learn how to spell… ;)

  14. And I’d take a good look at your own country’s problems before you call any other country “a bad excuse.”

Have your say!
