Salon.com: Abject bigotry at the New York Post

Abject bigotry at the New York Post

As I wrote about on Wednesday, Associated Press over the last year has been publishing an investigative series detailing how the NYPD, often in conjunction with the CIA, has been systematically spying on entire Muslim communities both in New York City and in surrounding areas. Virtually none of those spied upon are suspected of any wrongdoing; they are just innocent people who are targeted for surveillance solely because they are Muslim. That’s why the program is so controversial. This is how this controversy was depicted yesterday by The New York Post, in a cartoon by Sean Delonas (click to enlarge; h/t sysprog):

According to The New York Post, to be Muslim — as between 5-7 million people in America are — is to be a hook-nosed, Osama-worshipping, suicide-bomb-wearing Terrorist. There is no other interpretation for someone justifying a massive, indiscriminate spying program aimed at Muslims generally with this response. It goes without saying that there is not a single other group against whom bigotry this hateful and overt would be tolerated. And that explains a great deal about what has happened with U.S. policy — both foreign and domestic — over the last decade.

  1. Such a disgusting generalisation. It’s like saying all Christians bomb abortion clinics.

  2. Reading is the cure to ignorance

  3. Figures the New York Post would print something like that. As Mike Royko observed: “No self-respecting fish would want to be wrapped in a Murdoch paper.”

  4. Well, the New York Post as always been just a crappy tabloid anyway. I wouldn’t have expected anything else from them.

  5. But only Christians bomb abortion clinics. Ergo……..

  6. “I give the Post all the respect any dog gives a post.”

  7. @Ebonee: Just so long as one is not reading Rupert Murdoch-owned FOX propaganda rags New York Post and Daily News. 😉

  8. You will find the same weapons, ammunition and explosives in a good portion of AMERICAN homes who are non-Muslim…smh

  9. So in one regard, the Moslem is the “New Jew”?

  10. To demonize and dehumanize the ‘enemy’ has always been a tactic to get the public to accept war. Look at German & Japanese prop posters of the past.

  11. The worst part is the controversy is about *students* who have done nothing wrong, and *don’t* deserve spying, and the cartoon instead portrays Afghan terrorists who are actively building bombs. The cartoonist definitely gets the official Islamophobe memo: “Never allow them to be victims. Always make them into whining perpetrators”

  12. As a Muslim… sometimes it seems that the only thing that these people are more scared of more than Muslims, are death and taxes.

  13. Tell me something I don’t already know. Ignorance is bliss for some, but agonizing for the rest. In a world full of information where knowledge of things abounds, it astounds me that some people will still choose to not find out for themselves what something is all about. Instead, the believe everything people tell them inluding the media.

  14. I would expect no less than this kind of crap from the jew york post. Who are you gone to slur next? disabled vets maybe? I would like to see a cartoon of 2 jews fighting over a penny and titled “how copper wire was made” boy would that be funny!

  15. Stupid people. I cherish my Muslim friends.

  17. I just posted a list of all the RUPERT MURDOCH holdings. Let us be mindful of where we spend our dollars.

  18. Well I am gonna have to tell my asian muslim friend that. Lol. Shes gonna be so disappointed ;). Media media media….smdh

  19. Over 35 years ago there was a similar but much less offensive “cartoon” in the Post. I wrote to the then-editor, Gerald Nachman, registering my objections. I received a letter of APOLOGY a week later, and an explanation that the cartoonist did not know that this would be offensive. Not a good explanation, but at least they tried! These days if you wrote to them they would answer “Well they deserve it!” or some such.

  20. Thank you Khadijah!! شكرًا جزيلان. WTF ever happened to the MONOPOLY laws??

  21. that’s how they feel about me? shit, no wonder i’m all alone here!

  22. One out of three still counts?

  23. America exporting fear and hate for over 200yrs well done how is that recession coming along and who is working on vacines by they way?

  24. This is horrid news coverage, just what we do not need , more hype and fear mongering.,

  25. I dont talk like that(bad accent) dont look like that (no big nose or unibrow) dont act like that (extremist) im simply myself, and i still represent millions of Muslims. I worship God, not Osama, this is just bs!

  26. I so agree. There is no sane reason to convert to the ideology of hate.

  27. I so agree. There is no sane reason to convert to the ideology of hate.

  28. what do you expect from the post

  29. what do you expect from the post

  30. They whitter on about Islam taking over the world, you want t’ see who’s making a bid at world domination? TAKE A LOOK AT THAT LIST! (Thanks Khadijah). It’s therefore obvious it’s the Australians. All that living upside down has turned them evil. There’s nothing like a good generalisation is there Rupert?

  31. My relatives every time say that I am killing my time here at web, however I know I am getting experience daily by reading such nice articles or reviews.

Have your say!
