Amid Muslim flap, New York police chief high in polls

(Reuters) – New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly won better than 2-to-1 approval ratings in a poll released on Tuesday as voters said police act appropriately in how they deal with Muslims by a margin of 58 percent to 29 percent.

The Quinnipiac University poll taken March 6-11 followed a number of controversies in recent months involving the New York Police Department, which has come under scrutiny since a news report last year that the CIA was helping police gather intelligence from mosques and minority neighborhoods.

Police have also been caught in a ticket-fixing scandal in the Bronx, manipulating crime statistics in Brooklyn and misinforming the public about how often an anti-Muslim documentary, since disavowed, was shown to police officers.

The Associated Press last August reported that undercover New York Police Department officers known as “rakers” were sent into minority neighborhoods to monitor bookstores, bars, cafes and nightclubs, and police used informants known as “mosque crawlers” to monitor sermons.

Still, voters gave high marks to Kelly, especially for the department’s aggressive anti-terrorism strategy.

The poll of 964 New York City voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent, found respondents approved by 63 percent to 31 the way New York police are doing their job and said by 82 percent to 14 percent the NYPD has been effective combating terrorism.

Kelly himself won an approval rating of 64 percent to 25 percent, which fell within the normal range for him. Kelly’s all-time high Quinnipiac rating of 71 percent came in May 2011 and his all-time low of 52 percent came in January 2007.

“New Yorkers brush aside the gripes about police surveillance of the Muslim community. Voter approval of the way police are handling terrorism is through the roof and overall approval for police in general and for Commissioner Ray Kelly is undented by criticism,” Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement.

  1. What a lark!!

  2. of cos… not surprised..

  3. Its all ok until it is THEIR group that the police acts this way on. Then look out!

  4. I’m glad I don’t live in New York…

  5. On Pd- overall or considering certian incidents…

  6. Polls are bogus! How many were asked? I just don’t buy it! Ask the entire city and we’d see a whole different reaction! I’m sure the people they asked don’t even know a Muslim person and get their information from Faux news.

  7. What

  8. What’s wrong with those ppl in New York ?

  9. If one considers this situation along with who is being targeting by the “stop and frisk policies” of NYPD…..it certainly paints a racial picture.
Being someone who lives right outside of NYC and works in NYC I would tend to think that this poll is suspect. Most NYers are troubled by all of this.
new yorkers may like the fact that crime has remained low and there haven’t been any successful terrorist attacks, none the less people are quite bothered about the hyper-surveilance, questionable legal mode that NYPD is operating under.

  10. The poll only shows the prejeduce and bias attitudes of the American people … this has been the case since the beginning .. American Indians, Irish, blacks, jews … long list .. and now Muslims

  11. Poll results can be largely predetermined, by the questions asked, and by who is polled.

  12. Opinion doesn’t make it legal

  13. How sad

  14. I think about the sexual morals/ perversions report by the late Kinsey- zoologist hummm. He claimed American households were living freaky lives behind their doors, but who was questioned for this report? The homosexual community. So the results were largely predetermined by the group being questioned.

  15. A good trend for libertard NYC. Keep up god’s work fighting the terrorist mooselimbs!

  16. If any other religion begins to hide behind bombs and mass murder then, unleash the hounds on them too. There is place for terror in this world. Stamp it out like the plague that it is. If you have cancer, you do whatever it takes to erradicate the desease.

  17. sounds to me like you are also a terrorizing idiot.. Just saying the truth..

  18. Chris Gennett: Like Christians? Or Jews? They just have bigger bombs and better methods to deliver them.

You’re an idiot for thinking Muslims are the only ones.

  19. Hamas bombs an Israeli school. Kills a few dozen people. Israel responds by sending a gunship in retaliation. Kills a few hundred people.

Who’s the bigger bad guy here? Israel? Palestine? Neither actually. Both are wrong.

Don’t even get me started on The Crusades if you want to talk mass murder.

  20. Pffft!! Don Hughes cannot understand his own profile picture.

  21. I wish some of you would read the actual poll results. There were some positives. Many of you seem to be viewing the entire results as negative. Some of you even have the percentages wrong.

We live in a city that has been, and will be… a target for terrorists. The NYPD has “proven effective in their counter-terrorism efforts” by preventing attacks… repeatedly. That brings relief and gratitude to citizens, including Muslim citizens. In my view, those attempted attacks were by lone wolf nutjobs who used Islam as their excuse to hurt as many people as they could. That is also how they were depicted in the local news.

NYC residents have also adapted to the reality of trading some liberties for the city’s safety. It is cooperation, and we ALL need to do it. “No bad guys here. Move on.” That is how I picture the monitoring. When they caught “the bad guys” before, none of them had a strong link to a specific mosque.

As a white Christian, I hope they are also monitoring any church or religious group that would lead to a ‘white power’ group. Some idiot, or group of idiots might decide to attack a mosque. That info would never be leaked, because it wouldn’t harm Commissioner Kelly’s reputation. Part of my approval of Kelly is that the NYPD has done outreach with the Muslim community. May God bless any mosque that holds an open house as a response.

As one of 964 NY voters, I took the poll. Some of the questions were yes or no when I would have preferred to answer from a range. Maybe that’s why some people refused to answer some questions. The pollsters have a reputation as being very reliable. I think the results show more shades of gray than most of you are seeing.

  22. BTW: Just because I have a telephone on my head… it doesn’t mean I will answer to trolls.

  23. I hate how people think by making up fun little nicknames like Mooselimbs and stuff it makes them legit. Go kill yourself. Or at least lock yourself in your mommy’s basement. Oh, right…
