Robert Spencer Fail: Tries to Use Death of Pope Shenouda III to Promote Sectarianism and Islamophobia

JihadWatch’s anti-Muslim fear-mongering director Robert Spencer likes to selectively highlight the most egregious and sectarian statements by Muslims to further his hate agenda against Islam/Muslims.

In the wake of the death of the Coptic Pope Shenouda III he posted a piece about how a cleric namedWagdi Ghoneim said that the death of Pope Shenouda was a “relief” because the Pope caused “sectarian strife” and sought to make Egypt into a “Coptic state.”

To address that specifically, I wonder if the irony is lost on Wagdi Ghoneim, he accused Pope Shenouda of having furthered “sectarian strife” but by writing what he did he himself engaged in “sectarian strife.”

While there are small fringe groups of Copts who wish to turn Egypt into a Coptic state, trying to push this concept as emerging from the Pope, or the mainstream of Copts is similar to the “Islamization” myth that ironically Spencer and his acolytes regularly engage in. The Pope himself was a nationalist and opposed “foreign intervention” and stated that while Copts are “marginalized” in Egypt they are not “oppressed.”

That said, the main point I want to highlight is the fact that Robert Spencer is attempting to shift focus from the overwhelming support and expressions of condolences and grief from Muslims for the passing of the Pope. He chooses one cleric and tries to attribute it as the general feeling of Muslim Egyptians.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

High ranking Muslim politicians, scholars, clerics, intellectuals and lay people expressed their sympathy and sadness at his passing.

“His holiness lived and died as a loyal patriot to his country,” Parliament Speaker Saad el-Katatni, an Islamist, told a joint meeting of the two chambers of parliament Saturday.

Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of al-Azhar, the highest seat of religious learning in the Sunni world, offered his condolences to the Egyptian people for such a great loss, saying,

“Egypt has lost one of its rare men at a sensitive moment when it most needs the wisest of its wise – their expertise and their purity of minds.”

Egypt Mufti Sheikh Ali Gomaa also mourned the deceased pontiff as a great Egyptian and patriot, saying,

“His death is a tragedy and a great loss for Egypt and its people of Muslims and Christians.”

Freedom and Justice Party, the Muslim Brotherhood’s political arm and the party with the largest majority in parliament stated,

“The Freedom and Justice Party sends its deepest condolences to the Egyptian people and our Christian brothers over the death of Pope Shenouda III,” FJP leader Mohamed Mursi said.

Presidential contenders such as Amr Moussa and Ahmed Shafiq also expressed their sadness,

Presidential aspirant Amr Moussa said he was saddened by Pope Shenouda’s death.

“We have lost a great value and a pre-eminent pope,” said Ahmed Shafiq, another presidential contender, and a Mubarak-era prime minister.

Here is a picture of Egyptian Christians expressing their thanks and reciprocating the “love” they received at the death of their leader:

“We feel your love. Thank you, Muslim brothers and sisters”

  1. This islamaphobic sheikhs always qoute idiots to make Islam look bad!

  2. these *

  3. I’ll never understand how people like these see the few arrogant terrorist within the Islamic religion and decide to slap a “terrorist” label on everyone assossiated with that religion. thats like a group of asians bombing time square and suddenly everyone in the country is up in arms against EVERY asain!

  4. Jihad Watch is a dumb site anyway.

  5. The United States has the highest population of looney tunes on earth.

  6. Naiim: agreed… it’s ridiculous for anyone to paint all of any group with the same color on the same brush… there are pro & con… good & evil found in any “group”…

  7. No matter how much they try to make Islam look bad the more people are taking shahada, ALLAH SWT is the best of planners

  8. This is why they why they never wanted to ban abortion. Now morons and douchebags are america.

  9. I have a somewhat limited scope of Islam, my only information comes from a comparative religion course about Eastern political Islam, making it more of a political science course than anything else. My main question is, according to the Qur’an, do non-Muslims go to hell? My only basis for asking is because I’ve heard conflicting answers before, and maybe someone on here can help me.

  10. yes we got to hell, if Allah is not pleased with us (muslims) what muslim told you that they cant go to hell? I can only assume all religions belive there is a hell and will go it if God is not pleased with them… errrr am I wrong here, help me out folks:)

  11. There will be 73 sects and only one will be on the right path, as with the Christian and Jews

  12. I guess what I mean is, say someone lived a righteous life, gave to the poor, treated others kindly, honored their families, etc. but was also an adamant atheist. What will happen to that person in the afterlife?

  13. Anyone who does wrong, believes there is more than one god is headed towards hell. But the almighty is someone who can forgive, in short no one can claim to go to heaven or hell.

  14. This sums it all up.

He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus – to establish the religion and not be divided therein. Difficult for those who associate others with Allah is that to which you invite them. Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him].” 42:13

“And whoever desires other than Islam as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.” 3:85

Narrated Anas: Allah’s Messenger said, “When a disbeliever performs any good deed, he is rewarded for it in this world; and in the case of a Muslim, Allah stores up his good acts for him in the Hereafter and provides him with subsistence in this life due to his obedience.” (Muslim)

Either you’re submitting to Allah, or something else entirely.

  16. I guess I would also like to add that God will take who he wants to heaven, and put who he wants in hell.

  17. I guess I’d better pack my bags for hell then. I’m not an “atheist” per se but I am not religious and do not ascribe to Islam. When you say Allah is forgiving though, does that mean once you’re in hell (what is in hell, by the way?) and you realize Allah is the truth, are you only temporarily punished for not worshiping him?

  18. Allah knows best and he gives you all the tools you need to be successful. You just have to utilize them. The message will reach everyone (just how it’s reaching you now). The Prophet (pbuh) says that Islam will enter every house and everyone will know. There is no god other than Allah and Muhammad (pbuh) is his messenger. This is where it starts. If you embrace Islam, you become a true follower of Jesus, Moses, Abraham and all Prophets (peace be upon them all) because they all submitted to the will of Allah (God). The choice is yours.. Peace

  19. The term “Islam” can be vastly interpreted however. it simply means submission. You can believe in Allah, submit to Him, but not necessarily call yourself a Muslim. Even an Atheist could be considered a Muslim. The Koran makes reference to the Holy Spirit, which inspires people to do good. Non-believers are characterized as those who always do wrong, betray others, etc. It is the absence of a connection to God that causes them to be like that. Therefore, even if one calls themself an Atheist, if they do good and treat others well, they are still submitting to God’s will and his teachings, though they may not consciously realize it. That is simply my belief, but I find it to be the most logical interpretation. the Koran is their for people to interpret in any way they wish. Islam technically holds no special place for imams or sheiks, so what you yourself believe is as much “True Islam” as the most moderate or the most militant belief of anyone else as far as mankind knows.

  20. Christopher, in Islam it is mainly the deeds in life that decide someone’s fate in the afterlife (The religion that someone belonged to is of secondary importance compared to deeds). Allah always combines those two sentences in the Qur’an: “Those who believe” and “those who do good deeds” like those examples:

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds” 18:30

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging,” 18:107

Notice how, according to these (and many more) quotes from the Qur’an that believing is not enough but must be accompanied by a good and virtuous life. In fact we Muslims believe that many Muslims will end up in hell because they were terrible people in life. Also, see this:

“Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muhammad] and those who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians – those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness – no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.” 5:69

Basically it’s including [good] people from other religions as well in Allah’s favor.

    And finally:

“That Day, the people will depart separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds. So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it [reward], And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it [punishment].” 99:6-8

In the end only Allah knows what happens to each person in the afterlife but Islam is NOT a religion that says that only it’s adherents are saved/go to heaven like many other religions do. Hope that helped.

  21. ^what about atheists who’ve done good?

  22. I believe it’s as that last quote says : An atom’s weight of good or evil will be rewarded/punished. So everyone, regardless of what they believed or practiced in life, will be rewarded or punished based on their deeds. And Allah knows best.

  23. I’m sorry brother Mohamed but I will have to correct you regarding Surah 5:69. The Jews and Christians Allah refers to are the true followers of Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them) from the past. They were the ones who submitted their will to Allah just as the Prophets did. Today however is a different story because Muhammad (pbuh) was sent for all mankind while Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them) were both sent to the Children of Israel at particular times only. The message will reach everyone.. Allah knows best because we don’t know what rests in the hearts of man. Allah makes it clear that the only way acceptable is Islam (total submission to the will of Allah). Everyone will get the opportunity to know the message. If you reject Allah and his messenger, you will have no helper on the Day of Judgement. Rejecting Allah makes your deeds worthless in the hereafter and only in this life will they be beneficial..

  24. As usual, Robert Spencer and his wrongwing-wingnut cronies can only lie, lie and lie.

    Oh…..did I mention that they also lie….

  25. Bro. Mohamed:

I also differ in that our salvation is primarily based on the mercy and grace of Allah.

  26. God clearly states in the Holy Quraan that anyone who believes in Him and does good deeds, setting up no other god beside Him (that includes Jesus AND Mohammed), have nothing to fear. Those who are inclined to do good, and believe in only ONE God, belong in Paradise. What ever name they give their religion these, in the sight of God, are Muslims. And God knows best.

  27. I am of the view that the Dutch foreign ministry reads JihadWatch and take foreign policy pointers from it…so…when Egypt was in turmoil last year – and people were getting kille -, you never heard a statement out of The Hague unless the victims were Copts.

It is shameful how these “clash of civilizations” crazies never miss an opportunity to divide the Middle East and Egypt especially.

  28. elle,

don’t you have a hadith about an atheist giving a dog some water. and muhammad said she would go to heaven. can’t you give christopher some hope.

    christopher,

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah –

    2:3

الذين يؤمنون بالغيب ويقيمون الصلاة ومما رزقناهم ينفقون
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,

    2:4

والذين يؤمنون بما أنزل إليك وما أنزل من قبلك وبالآخرة هم يوقنون
And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].

    2:5

أولئك على هدى من ربهم وأولئك هم المفلحون
Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.

    2:6

إن الذين كفروا سواء عليهم أأنذرتهم أم لم تنذرهم لا يؤمنون
Indeed, those who disbelieve – it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them – they will not believe.

    2:7

ختم الله على قلوبهم وعلى سمعهم وعلى أبصارهم غشاوة ولهم عذاب عظيم
Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.

good luck dude, but i think juilus allen is right. if you don’t pick up the message being sent to you today, the koran is your only salvation, perhaps your heart has been sealed.

Have your say!
