Cardinal Dolan on Brookfield Mosque: Muslims Deserve Worship Space

Former Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan, recently elevated to Cardinal in New York, supported Muslims’ efforts to build a second mosque in the Milwaukee area, although he didn’t address the specific Brookfield site

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan supported the Islamic Society of Milwaukee’s efforts to build a new mosque, telling Fox6now.com’s Ted Perry that Muslims deserve spaces to worship.

In Milwaukee to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at Holy Hill Saturday, Dolan sat down for a one-on-one interview with Perry that touched on a variety of issues, including a question on the Brookfield mosque.

Perry said some have said they object to the proposed mosque construction due to zoning and traffic issues, while others are opposed to Islam.

“What do you say to those who say they are Christians but have no tolerance for another religion?” Perry asked.

“Yeah, I’m uncomfortable with that,” Dolan said.

Dolan said he publicly supported construction of a mosque in New York, while cautioning that building it at the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks was a “delicate” issue.

He told Perry that historically, Catholics faced opposition to building churches on main streets across America and Catholic churches often are found today off the “main drag.”

“We felt the sting the other way so now I think we have to be in the forefront,” Dolan said. “We felt the brunt of it the other way, so no, I would defend their right to do it (build a mosque).”

Dolan did not address whether the specific site in Brookfield was appropriate for city approval.

On Saturday, members of a Waukesha County interfaith religious group called SOPHIA met at the proposed mosque site in Brookfield on Pheasant Drive to offer prayers and support for the project.

“Do not be afraid,” was a common theme by leaders of various other religions. Still, some remain fearful of whether a mosque will have ties to terrorism.

The city will hold a public informational meeting on the proposal at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Courtroom of the Public Safety Building at 2100 N. Calhoun Rd. Residents can comment on the proposal at a public hearing at 6 p.m. May 7 in the Common Council chambers at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Rd.

  1. Even in Iran Christians have their Churches and Jews have their Synagogues to worship in. In Teharan, Iran there are 25 Synagogues alone. …That’s in the Ilsamic Republic of Iran…..and yet there are many Americans who think Iran hates Christians and Jews because they think Iranian hates freedom of religion, while at the same time these same idiots opposed American Muslims to worship in mosques/Islamic Center.

  2. For 20 centuries, mosques, churches and synagogues have flourished side by side and their leaders taught mutual respect. Then post WWII, when the palestinians were displaced to make room to create a new Israel, the US decided to enforce this land grab at the end of a gun. Now, six decades later, the vitriol spouted by the right wing, keeps the division between the three religions of abraham a chasm that is hard to breach.

  3. How nice of him — still, it’s not up to Christians to say who does and who does not deserve worship space, any more than it’s up to straights to say who deserves the benefits of legal marriage, or men to say who deserves to vote, or whites to decide who deserves personal liberty. That’s why civil rights are called rights.

  4. Americans are the most fanatical, genuinely closed minded people you will ever meet.

Also, the West has never been at peace with Islam, they’ve declared war on Islam from the start. It started with the Byzantines and continues with the Americans. The Jews have been a parasitic element in every society. They can all fuck themselves.

  6. I’m glad to see a christian offical supporting another religious community. Gives me hope for the majority of blockheads I grew up with.

  7. Good for you sir, how pleasant to see a Cardinal doing God’s work, now about protecting those pedophiles…………..

  8. well, every religion deserves it…we are free to keep believing our faith..every religion deserve their own space to worship n gathering..4 that ,i might say “WELL DONE” for the open-minded decision.

  9. This is truly what religion means! Working together and not hating orhers!

  10. It’s so funny how Islamophobes claim that Shariah is taking over USA but we don’t even get the day off on our holidays.

  11. Yasmin Ghaffari, you need more exposure with Americans honey. and I am disappointed that no one here has called you a bigot yet for spewing hatred towards other faiths. Biased opinion are sign of “genuinely closed minded people” who perhaps are “fanatical”.

  12. @Know The True Religion – Since you mentioned the Sharia… our constitution is over 50% Shariah. Will the Islamophobes clamor to have the constitution changed? They should read about what Shariah is before spewing the foam!

  13. @yasmin ghaffari , dont be ignorant :@
