On Friday, City of Redmond Mayor John Marchione will be honored by the Washington chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) at the organization’s 10th Anniversary Banquet and Awards Celebration.

Marchione will receive the Outstanding Service Award for his “many gestures and actions of support for his Muslim constituents,” according to CAIR-WA press release. In particular, the organization highlighted the mayor’s response to ahate note left on a Muslim family’s car in the Bella Bottega shopping center last year.

“Very few if any local officials have in the past have issued such an immediate, clear and strong statement in response to an anti-Muslim hate incident in their jurisdiction, as he did immediately after the event in Redmond,” the press release stated. “His statement was clear and sent a very clear message to the public affirming the values of our nation and the City of Redmond. Coming from the top city official, it also ‘carried weight.'”

Friday’s event will be at the Bellevue Hilton, 300 112th Ave. S.E. in Bellevue, from 6-8:45 p.m. Speakers for the evening will include comedian Dean Obeidallah, Huffington Post contributor and keynote speaker Wajahat Ali and Imam Siraj Wahhaj, religious director of the At-Taqwa Mosque in New York and leader of the Muslim Alliance in North America.
