Vlaams Belang offers ‘burqa bounty’

5 June 2012 General 7 Comments Email This Post Email This Post

(Reuters) – Belgian right-wingers have offered to pay a 250 euros ($310) bounty to anyone who reports a veiled woman to police, they said on Tuesday, in the wake of face veil riots in Brussels.

Filip Dewinter, a senior figure within Vlaams Belang, a right-wing party, told Reuters the riots had made police apprehensive about enforcing the burqa ban and that the payment should put pressure on authorities to further enforce it.

“It’s a textile prison for the women who have to live under it,” he said.

It comes after protesters hurled bins and metal barriers at a Brussels police station last week after a Muslim woman was arrested for refusing to remove her face veil, or niqab.

A Brussels police spokesman said he was unaware of the money being offered, but said any officer who sees a woman wearing a niqab would issue a penalty.

“When someone is breaking the law we always have to intervene, demonstrations or no, the niqab is prohibited,” he said.

Women in Belgium risk a maximum fine of 150 euros if they wear a full face veil in public. Belgium and France both banned the wearing of full veils in public last year.

Dewinter said he was not aware how many people had already responded to the offer of a bounty.

A spokeswoman for Belgium’s federal police said the legality of the bounty was a question for the judiciary, but if someone felt insulted by it they could file a complaint with the police.

Police in Belgium are investigating last week’s riots and arrested 13 members of the Islamist group Sharia4Belgium on Sunday, the police spokesman said.

Sharia4Belgium was not immediately available to comment.

  1. They aren’t really helping by offering a bounty. It is crazy situation though that a woman asked to show her face by the police becomes violent and then islamofascists decide to join in by also becoming violent. Sharia4Belgium are a well known hate group with ties to the ridiculous andy choudary and his group of crazies in England.

  2. WHAT? muslims rioting. how could that be? they follow the religion of peace. and i keep hearing that we don’t need to ban shaira because muslims have to follow the law of the country they are in. now i’m really confused.

  3. Hey mike malzahn,
U don’t know much about Sharia. Sharia encompasses a Muslims daily life and rituals, like praying, fasting, charity, and dressing. How we interact with other ppl, how we avoid sin, etc. The laws are compatible because ppl have a right to dress how they want. U wouldn’t stop a nun from wearing a headscarf, why stop the niqab? It doesn’t interfere with what u practice. Oh wait, I know u wanna say u r worried about theives huh? Well stealing is wrong in Islam. If a woman actually did want to steal, then she would dress in a way that would not identify her as a Muslim in a non-Muslim majority country. The terrorists on 9/11 didnt dress like Arabs, they wore Western clothing. Second, anyone can run into a store with a mask and steal stuff off the shelf. So there is no way to identify a criminal..oh wait, I’m confused, I forgot what security cameras and license plates were for! Silly me. These laws are only for discrimination. Should I ban a bikini in public because it makes me uncomfortable? That is discrimination. Pure and simple. Srry if u can’t understand.

  4. m bennet,

“U don’t know much about Sharia.” i know that the hudud is claimed to be “god’s law” and it is brutal. i mean come on dude, you posted the hadith with the second reason for rajm being adultry. that’s no good dude. i know women inherit half as much as men, again not good. and please no need for the “men are the protectors and maintaners” of women explaination. in the west we don’t make law that locks people into “god given” gender roles. lady justice wears a blindfold, because all that come before her are equal (not equitable) in the eyes of the law.
“Sharia encompasses a Muslims daily life and rituals, like praying, fasting, charity, and dressing.” yes i’m slightly familiar. you need foot baths in the airports because sharia demands you wash your feet before you pray. does sharia not allow you to wear shoes and socks? oh yeah, no shoes in the mosques? seems you are the one stuck in the 6th century.
“How we interact with other ppl, how we avoid sin, etc.” so do you shake women’s hands?
“The laws are compatible because ppl have a right to dress how they want.” lol. well appearently not in some counrties. the french and the dutch have LAWS against wearing burqas and niqabs in public. strange i keep hearing that sharia says muslims need to follow the laws of the non-muslim lands they live in.
“U wouldn’t stop a nun from wearing a headscarf, why stop the niqab?” agian dude ur hilarious. never seen a nun’s habit with a veil.

“It doesn’t interfere with what u practice.” don’t know what u mean here?
“Oh wait, I know u wanna say u r worried about theives huh?” yes
“Well stealing is wrong in Islam. If a woman actually did want to steal, then she would dress in a way that would not identify her as a Muslim in a non-Muslim majority country.” ok, are you really this short sighted? the point is not what would a devout muslim in a niqab do. but if we have a bunch of people cruising the streets in niqabs, would it not make it easier for thevies?
“The terrorists on 9/11 didnt dress like Arabs, they wore Western clothing.” of course. they didn’t want to draw attentin to themselves and they weren’t worried about being identified after their crime, you know considering they where going to be dead. i wouldn’t worry about a niqab being a suicide bomber. now a terrorist, most likely male, may use a niqab to conceal weapons for a mumbia stlye attack. and try and get away to save themselves to be martyred on another day. lol, your comparison is silly.
“Second, anyone can run into a store with a mask and steal stuff off the shelf.” true. but note they will probably have to run, your word. not walk into a mall and casually walk around with their face covered. so if i walked into a mall in a ninja outfit, and the security officer tells me to remove my face covering i should say “ppl have a right to dress how they want.” f-off.
“So there is no way to identify a criminal..oh wait, I’m confused, I forgot what security cameras and license plates were for! Silly me.” yes silly you. first no one is saying that there is “no way to identify a criminal” other then facial reconition. but it makes it a lot harder. as for license plates, please have you never hear of stolen getaway cars? or just steal someone elses plate. how easy is that? got a srcewdriver? or when they track you down say you lent your car to your cousin. how about a getaway plan of just walking out to the streets of manhatan and blending in with the other 1000s of niqab wearers? that might be far in the future, but law sets precidents. as for “security cameras” that is exactly what the veil defeats. you are funny.
“These laws are only for discrimination.” actually i think the europeans feel that it is sexist to make women niqabs or burqas? but i wouldn’t pretend to know their motivation.
“Should I ban a bikini in public because it makes me uncomfortable?” again some bikinis have been banned. again your comparison is silly. a bikini doesn’t cover ones face. in fact it would probably make identifying a thief easier, especially if she has any ink on her.
“That is discrimination. Pure and simple. Srry if u can’t understand.” no i understand that that is discrimination. we discriminate all the time. we discriminate against child abusers when hiring a nanny, well hopefully you would. we discriminate against ax weilding people when there is an ax murderer in the area. we discriminate against hat and sunglasses wearers when then enter a bank all the time. sorry if you can’t understand.

next halloween when i see that sign that says no masks are allowed in the 7/11 i’ll tell them i’ll give them my plate number if they let me keep my mask on. it will be interest to hear what they say.

  5. hey, i’ve always wondered, why don’t men wear niqabs? or do you just have to have a beards in your sharia?

  6. The footbath demands etc. are just manufactured cultural clashes. Muslims can pray in travel mode without any of the usual trappings including creeping on floor.

I worked with muslims in several offices years ago, none of this trash went on, it is antagonistic bosh to impose muslim customs on the godless kuffar whom they can’t kill just yet.

Some of this – niqabs, trying to shove mosques into neighborhoods – are just publicity seeking stunts to bash the kuffar.

  7. “The laws are compatible because ppl have a right to dress how they want.”

Except in many so called muslim countries.

Have your say!
