The Islamophobia Crisis: Christopher Caldwell in TNR

I’ve covered Christopher Caldwell before–and so I do once more.  The author of a popular monograph on Europe’s alleged Muslim problem, as well as a columnist at the rightly well-regarded Financial Times, Caldwell recently returned to the subject of Islam and Europe with an essay in The New Republictitled “Europe’s Other Crisis.”

Namely, Muslims.  While Caldwell is always an erudite writer, and comfortable moving across genres and sources, his arguments remain seriously and inexplicably selective, and his perspective worryingly one-sided and seriously exaggerated in alarmism.  I covered his TNR essay for Religion Dispatches, because it demanded a strong reaction (in no small measure due to the seriousness with which his arguments are received):

Caldwell is so busied with Europe’s “lopsided” relationship with its Muslims that he overlooks the outright slaughter of tens of thousands of Muslims as Western Europe sat by, or even actively hampered the victims’ right to self-defense. It’s unfortunate that such selectivity might be Caldwell’s greatest consistency.

As you can see, I am especially miffed by Caldwell’s blindness to the longstanding population of Eastern European Muslims, who are deeply relevant to, but entirely ignored by, his argument (or, rather, his lack of one):

Caldwell makes no mention of any of this, nor of Eastern Europe’s ancient Muslim communities. There have been Eastern European Muslims for longer than Protestantism has existed, and yet Islam is still, centuries on, the Other, notable only as immigrant victimizer.

  1. US helped those E. European muslims, what thanks did it get.

The NR article was interesting and made some points. Muslims think they are entitled to kill Jews and other non muslims and they know they will be supported in their massacre efforts by multitudes of muslims worldwide. With muslims you get massacres.

It is not a religion! It’s a killer diller tribal thing! Europe I think is quite capable to reverting into ww2 mode. If not genocide then mass deportation.

  2. don’t konw what the eastern european muslims are planning in europe. but here in tampa they are trying to blow up one of my favorite south tampa irish pubs.

  3. @mike yet u forget to mention how the mosque sheikhs were against him how predictable always half truths with your kind

  4. jack,

i think most muslims are against terrorism. if i don’t make that statement with every comment, i’m a half truth teller? seriously. his violent rants got him ostrasied from area mosques. dude it’s right in the article. “It’s the kind of rhetoric that made Osmakac an outcast in Tampa Bay’s Muslim community and helped bring him to the attention of the FBI.”

you say: “predictable always half truths with your kind”. so what’s my kind? lol, is that meant to be an insult? please bring something stronger than that nonsense. maybe quote 5:32? at least call me kuffar. lmfao
is this a “half truth” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-18401223
so do you think the salfaist are going to win out in eyqpt?

i do love this site. ya’ll crack me up.

  5. anon,

Yes the US indeed helped the Muslims of E. Europe but you can see in ample instances that US assistance be it humanitarian/logistic/politico-military/religious, are never without vested interests. Of course, there are very few on earth who assist without motives. But during the Chechen wars, when Russia was dyeing its clothes with Chechen blood, US turned a blind eye to that. When during the Cold War days, the menstrual garbages Soviet Marshals Rokossovsky and Sokolovsky drove tanks through the eid gatherings in Azerbaijan, the US never protested. US plus Europe had been dilly-dallying over Serb massacre of Muslims and Croats. US and Europe had also been silent when the Saudi baseborne massacred 430 Iranian pilgrims inside the Mosque compound at Mecca.

If you judge the history, the plight of Muslims is no match for the case in Russia which can outshine the Spanish inquisitions or the Crusades. In Russia, Islam is much older than Orthodox Christianity. Just take a look at Volga Bulgaria. The Kievan Rus territory was just 2.1 million SQM. But when the so-called Russians began to take them one by one, Russia reached a landmass of 17.075 million SQM.

I guess Mike will CCP selectively from my post and try to prove that he is right and I am wrong. Yet, I am ready to counter him. I have just returned from jail and now free to blogwrite.

  6. Mike,

Thanks for your post about the Tampa Bay Muslim swine. You see, the US authorities arrested him. But friend, you just posted the source, without mentioning in your post that this swine had already been declared as an outcast by two mosques. Let that swine rot in jail.

And I request you not to select from anyone’s post and try to answer partially. You have many information at your disposal and I think you do not have face load-sheddin in US. So, why do you do that?

  7. dongo,

i love ya man, no homo. anon already threw me with her AAs? so is CCP, cut, copy, paste? if so that’s not really acurate. u either cut or copy. funny if i’m right but my mind set, from your mention of the soviets, was CCCP, as in the uniuon of the soviet socialistic republic (ussr), but in russian of course. plus my dad was a rocket scientist and i once drew him a rocket… well it’s a long story. well back to my CCP.

“Yes the US indeed helped the Muslims of E. Europe but you can see in ample instances that US assistance be it humanitarian/logistic/politico-military/religious, are never without vested interests” duh, we where worried about the destabilization of europe. one of our biggest trading partners. wasn’t you who pointed out the assasination attempt on the archduke ferdinand.

“US turned a blind eye to that.” yes of course. what? you wanted a nuclear war? we turned a blind eye to tibet too. sometimes descretion is the better part of valor.

you hold the west to too high of standard. of course we act in our best interest, just like you said “Of course, there are very few on earth who assist without motives” who know more history then i do. but check out the lincoln brigade. there are examples on both sides. america acts on the side of right sometimes and we sit nilly-willy sometimes.

“US plus Europe had been dilly-dallying over Serb massacre of Muslims and Croats.” so where were the muslim nations? where was allah? how about sending some angels? like in the battle of badr? come on dude. don’t compare american foriegn policy to divine writ.

“US and Europe had also been silent when the Saudi baseborne massacred 430 Iranian pilgrims inside the Mosque compound at Mecca.” agian where is the god of mecca?

“If you judge the history” clearly you know much more history than i. history is fun, and those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. but can’t we move beyond these old grudges.

“Islam is much older than Orthodox Christianity.” again your history is strong. is that a referance to the great schism of 1066? but seriouly what does that matter?

“Yet, I am ready to counter him” cool. you have a good one. i got a bit more vodka to drink and then it’s bedtime. it’s 12:24pm here, or maybe that is 00:24 to you? either way if i don’t hear from you tonite, have a good one.

  8. You are both right and wrong, Mike. The CCP I used was to refer all. See, you did that I told. The CCCP is SSSR in Russian which means Soyuz Sovetskykh Sozialystycheskykh Respublika which is English stands for USSR.

The God of Mecca did not help even during the battle of Tours. Why should He help where Muslims are massacring each other?

I think we need to know history because the presetn/ongoing rivalry between Muslims has its roots in the past and the present will decide the future to a very large extent.

No. I did not and do not want nuke wars. But when the Caucasus conflict erupted in 2008, the US and the West did not care for a nuke war while aiding Georgia.

The Kosovars had an arms embargo on them. What could the Muslim nations do without their Daddy West’s consent except OIC-eeing? I did not say Islam to be much older than Orthodox Christianity, I said Islam was much older in Russia than Orthodox Christianity. And yes, Russia destroyed the Muslims in Caucasus and Siberia settling the Slavs therein.

  9. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Tours

so many battles. hard to know them all? or are u referancing a different battle of tours?

    your entire post confuses me?????????????????

“I think we need to know history because the presetn/ongoing rivalry between Muslims has its roots in the past and the present will decide the future to a very large extent.” i agree with that to an extent. i also think that holding on to past grudges is a bad thing. this tit for tat comparisons of who has killed the most, is counter productive. that’s why i laugh every time the crusades are mentioned. here i’ll settle it once and for all. europeans, white people have killed far more people then any other group, race, nation, religion…etc. but we are trying to move away from such actions. not always succesfully. but we aren’t fixated on ancient texts.

you forgot our indifferance to the killing fields or the cultural revolution. and of course stalin’s policies. again why is american held to such a standard? god appearently has an army of angels? why his indifferance not challenged?

  10. dongo,

don’t know what face load-sheddin is?

“why do you do that?” why do i copy their statement and then give my response? doesn’t it make it easier to follow the conversation? you don’t have to scroll up to see what the previous comment was. plus isn’t it more acurate? i don’t like when people claim i said “this ot that”. please copy what i say. i will stand by my statements, or retract them if i say something stupid. would you prefer i just call you a liar, or a street dog?

  11. You may call me a street dog but I am not a liar. Please justify why you call me a liar.

  12. Load shedding may be what you call power failure in the developed world.
And not only do you copy to your advantage but you also part-quote others. Yesterday, you said that I said Islam was older than Orthodox Christianity. When did I say that?

And of course, you stand by your statements but up to then which you find suits your stance. Typical of yourself.

Have your say!
