County Appeals Judge’s Ruling On Mosque Approval

County Appeals Judge’s Ruling On Mosque Approval

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) – Rutherford County officials are appealing a judge’s ruling that voided the construction approval for a local mosque.

Chancellor Robert Corlew last month ruled that the county violated Tennessee’s Sunshine Law by not providing sufficient notice for the May 2010 meeting where the mosque was approved.

County attorneys argued that officials followed their standard procedure for informing the public of that meeting.

In his ruling, Corlew implied that they should have taken additional steps because of the intense public interest in the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro.

On Thursday, county attorneys filed a notice of appeal.

In the notice, they question whether requiring a different standard of public notice for the mosque is a violation of the U.S. Constitution and Tennessee Constitution.

  1. One thing I read on this says the mosque has aroused suspicion because there are so few muslims in the area. So it looks like a terrorist motel.

  2. anon,

that’s a crazy concern. you can build or over build all you want in american. perhaps they have crunched the numbers and realize that within 50 years they will need a mosque of the size they are building and they are looking ahead. nothing wrong with that.

there is nothing worst then when i see them expanding a road by one lane, when it is obvious we will need two more lanes in like 10 years.

  3. The mosque looks like it is located in a religion zone next to a Baptist church and not crowding in anywhere. The citizens just don’t want it.

This is the first I have heard the argument that islam is not a religion being advanced in a US courtroom. If a precedent is ever set for that, it opens the door to non recognition as a religion, e.g. Hungary does not recognize islam.

Does the SPLC declare the NOI a hate group? It is mostly hot air I guess, but I was wondering if it deserves the protection of religion status.

  4. The NOI deserves as much protection as the KKK. They both have done some good things for their race, but have also done some evil things as well. They both claim a religion (NOI=Islam; KKK=Christianity) that the orthodoxy of which do not consider them to be true adherents.
