Reddit Will Destroy Islam With Dumb Memes

In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s apparently a desperate shortage of anti-Muslim ridicule on the Internet. Dissatisfied with the web of  hate sites that have proliferated in the last decade with millions of dollars of funding and promotion, a supposed “ex-Muslim” has begged atheists to go on the offensive:

We ex-muslims are a very small minority, and there’s really nothing we can we really do to change anything. We can’t form orgnaizations or voice our thoughts in most Muslim countries. We practically have no rights whatsoever besides the right to go to jail or be hanged or beheaded for our blasphemy.

But the voice of millions of atheists like all of you would significantly help us. It brings into world attention our plight, and all the horrible things Islam is responsible for, and how it has oppressed and destroyed many of our lives. It would at least help change some laws that would benefit us ex-muslims.

I heard that Ayaan Hirsi Ali (an exmuslim) has replaced Hitchens as the one of the Four Horsemen of New Atheism. Maybe this is a cue that we need to concentrate more against the Religion of Peace?

Many atheists heeded the call, demonstrating once again they too can be hateful and intolerant.

Reddit Will Destroy Islam With Dumb Memes

by Adrian Chen, Gawker

Attention Muslims of the world: Better get your Muslim-ing in ASAP because atheist users of Reddit have decided to “go after” your puny religion. Rest in peace, Islam. You had a good thousand-and-a-half-or-so years but you’re no match for image macros and rage comics.

The atheism section of Reddit is a popular venue for insufferable non-believers to swap screenshots of the interminable Facebook comment flame wars they wage against their fundamentalist friends and Christian relatives. No religious-themed Facebook post will go un-commented on by these fearless logic warriors. But now Reddit’s atheism brigade has turned the full brunt of its attention to Islam, after a user claiming to be an ex-Muslim asked for their help.

Finally, someone on the internet will criticize Islam!

Often these sorts of campaigns end up in a frantic fundraising drive, but it looks like the bus monitor lady has used up all the internet’s money-raising mojo for the week. Instead, anti-Islam memes are flooding the front page of Reddit; Lolcats for people who sleep with a copy of God Is Not Great under their pillow. There’s a “Scumbag Muslim” meme, and a “Most Interesting Mohammed” meme, and this cartoon about how Islam has been “raping children for 1400 years” that is like something your 75 year-old racist great uncle would forward to you in an email. In fact a lot of the memes that Reddit users have been voting to the front page in their supposedly witty “war” on Islam are predicated on the same gross stereotypes of Muslims as rampaging terrorist-rapists favored by the likes of the shithead Pastor Terry Jones. There’s even a similar obsession with burning the Quran. (That last picture also happens to use a Hindu to represent a Muslim. But what the hell, they’ve all got turbans.)

Atheists on Reddit decrying a religion as the practice of intolerant douchebags is as ridiculous as… well, atheists on Reddit decrying a religion for treating women like sh*t.

(Comment from Garibaldi): I will also add that it seems Reddit Islam (r/islam) won the internets in this war waged upon them by the militant atheists. The goal of atheists who partook in this was to provoke a reaction from the backward, evil Muslims, and in fact the opposite occurred–most Muslims responded with grace and tact.

The deluge of racist and hateful anti-Islam/Muslim memes and comments also afforded Muslims a wellspring of support from various groups, including atheists themselves who vehemently disagreed with the whole campaign, ChristiansJews and Buddhists.

This campaign can be compared to the Everybody Draw Muhammad Day, which this year passed without much notice in May.

  1. So is Molly Norris still in hiding?

The one good thing about all the crazy abuse is that it wears down the riot trigger. Can’t hardly riot and pillage and murder every 2 seconds because someone did/said something outrageous.

Could just go out and kill a nun or health aide to demonstrate hatred for the West. otherwise, keep on killing the shia/amadi/christians on a regular basis.

  2. I know, it was probably the stupidest day in the history of that website. I really wish that atheists on that website (and apparently around the world) didn’t stereotype Muslims, Christians, or really any other group of people like they do sometimes. Although not a religion, I believe that the meme up at the top could easily be about atheists.

  3. I am very doubtful that reddit will do as much damage as you are implying. The extremists in any religion cause the trouble because they are….well….extreme.
The meme’s aren’t only targeting Islam but every extremist in every religion. If the religions themselves wouldn’t tolerate violent extremists and/or intolerance of others ideas and beliefs then it wouldn’t come sliding back onto the rest of the sane and reasonable members of said religions.
    I don’t mean to offend anyone. I am simply pointing out that;
    1. Reddit is simply a reflection of the members thoughts or feeling towards something. Not mindless bigotry (In most cases)
    2. It’s not targeted towards all members of Islam. Only the extremists.
    3. Stop letting extremists set a bad example. Condemn them for the violence and intolerance they stand for.

  4. Actually I have never met a “Hindu” who wears a turban. You may be thinking of Sieks. But what the hell, they all wear turbans.
My attitude toward religious liberals is that they enable the more violent and pernicious religious reactionaries to continue on 1)by signing onto the supernatural, authoritarian worldview that allows irrationality to thrive and b)the idea of tolerance is used to quash criticism, satire, and the sharpness of irony which is necessary at times to drive home points about hypocrisy, irrationality, religious violence, and general bullshit.
“The goal of atheists who partook in this was to provoke a reaction from the backward, evil Muslims, and in fact the opposite occurred–most Muslims responded with grace and tact.”
I’m sure you have great insight into the goal of the people who launched a campaign to expose Muslim hypocrisy and viciousness but I think it may have been rather more to educate people about the latter than to “provoke a response from evil Muslims”.

  5. When’s the last time an atheist called for a fatwah, targeted a cartoonist for assassination or actually murdered a documentary filmmaker for “insulting” atheism?

  6. All religions and ideologies get ridiculed. Deal with it.

  7. This isn’t Islamophobia, it’s mockery, and mockery isn’t a bad thing. If faith can be shaken by a little ridicule, then it really wasn’t there to begin with.

A basic tenet of comedy is that nothing is off-limits, and nothing should be. You will be offended only if you agree to be offended.

  8. Great job at being a human being Jane. Minorities of the West, you all get ridiculed, deal with it. The White Man, in all his peaceful bliss, has decreed it.

anon, it’s great that you can see the good things in bigotry when it comes to darkies. Unfortunately, Western bloodlust can never be quenched.

  9. Atheist communists killed millions of people.

My, Ab, you are a racist.

  10. The muslim bloodlust, can it ever be quenched? Won’t there always be some minority to be lynched?

  11. Anon,

Thanks a lot for using the term “Muslim Bloodlust”.

When will that end? Well, I can’t say for sure, but though bloodthirsty, I think we can not kill more than Christians, which is another failure for us Muslims. Nevertheless, this failure is a positive thing for us. We are proud for not committing the Holocaust, the atomic bombings, starving millions of Iraqis to death and bragging of progress, modernity human rights protection, liberalism while standing on others’ skeletons, bones, flesh and blood.

  12. haters gonna hate…Nothing on Reddit should ever be taken seriously…

  13. “Great job at being a human being Jane. Minorities of the West, you all get ridiculed, deal with it. The White Man, in all his peaceful bliss, has decreed it.”

    Why bring race into it?

Religion and ideologies get ridiculed, deal with it.

If you want to live somewhere where islam isn’t ridiculed move to saudi arabia, of course that would mean living where all other religions are illegal, women are regarded as property and people are beheaded for “sorcery” but I am sure you’d be fine with all that.

  14. If you want to live somewhere where islam isn’t ridiculed move to saudi arabia, of course that would mean living where all other religions are illegal, women are regarded as property and people are beheaded for “sorcery” but I am sure you’d be fine with all that.

    //Jane
U obviously never been to Saudi.

  15. LarxII- on point 3…what exactly is the ‘condemnation’ that would satisfy you? Muslims have condemned the ‘violence and intolerance’, over and over. The news media has a lot of power in covering and therefore making people aware of the condemning and the media doesn’t always do this. But sometimes it does and yet people ignore it and keep up with this call for ‘Muslims to condemn terrorists, extremists etc.’

But, would Muslims not be hypocrites if they did not condemn the intolerance and violence of Christians, Jews, atheists etc.?

Jane- you must not be serious…you sound like a racist saying that black people should just go back to Africa. I don’t know if you are in the US, but the US has a constitution that says Muslims (or anyone else) does not need to move anywhere. Maybe you need to consider another country if you have a problem with the US constitution?

  16. L, I don’t live in the USA. I was replying to somebody who has an issue with religions being ridiculed.

  17. http://articles.cnn.com/2010-03-19/world/saudi.arabia.sorcery_1_saudi-government-appeals-court-verdict?_s=PM:WORLD

where did jane say blacks should go back to africa?

freedom of speech, the FIRST amendment.
