Olympics: International Judo Federation lifts ban on Saudi competitor wearing hijab

Olympics: International Judo Federation lifts ban on Saudi competitor wearing hijab

A female Saudi fighter will take part in the Olympic judo competition after being allowed to wear an Islamic headscarf, or hijab, of a specific design.

Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani is one of only two Saudi women to travel to London after the International Olympic Committee lobbied the conservative Islamic kingdom to end its refusal to send women to the Games.

But she had said she would only compete if she was allowed to wear the hijab, and judo officials refused, saying it would be dangerous.

A Saudi National Olympic Committee spokeswoman said the committee, the IOC and the International Judo Federation had now agreed on an acceptable form for the headscarf.

“They agreed on a design and she will compete wearing this design,” Razan Baker said, adding that she did not know how this design looked.

IJF spokesman Nicolas Messner confirmed that Shaherkani would compete, but declined to give further details.

The IOC this year successfully pressed Saudi Arabia and fellow Muslim nations Qatar and Brunei, the last three countries to refuse to send women to the Olympics, to end their bans.

The Saudi decision to send Shaherkani and teenage 800-metre runner Sarah Attar was praised by IOC President Jacques Rogge at the time. Shaherkani is due to compete in the heavyweight category on Friday.

The IJF’s regulations for the Olympic Games state that no headgear can be worn, and the federation says there could be a danger to fighters if a hijab is inadvertently used for an otherwise legal strangulation grip.

  1. Wonderful to see Muslim women becoming more empowered. Personally, I think the hijab requirement was more of a time appropriate thing, but should a woman’s personal beliefs require her to wear it, she should be free to do so. it’s good to know that new designs are being utilized to accommodate such beliefs in athletics.

  2. So regulations mean nothing when muslims are demanding exceptions again.

  3. It’s simply a common courtesy. I forget the name, but there was the one man who had lost both his feet, and was originally banned from running in the olympics because the steel springs he used for running could be considered an unfair advantage. However, after some negotiation, he was allowed to race.
Accommodations for those with special needs is simply being a decent human. besides, the regulations in question are to 1. prevent the use of protective gear that could be used defensively or offensively, and therefore provide an advantage (the unless her hijab is made of a half inch of of rubber, i don’t thing there’s a problem there) and 2. to protect the person wearing the hijab from being choked in a strangulation grip. So if anything, those choosing to wear the hijab are making it harder on themselves, but are willing to risk such for their beliefs.

  4. siyaj k’ak,

as for the guy with carbon fiber blades for feet (south african, oscar something), “blade runner” that was a bad desicion too.

why is the ioc begging muslim nations to allow their women to compete? isn’t the ioc being critical of their culture? it’s not allowed for westerners or western organizations to be critical of other’s cultures. clearly these women should spending their time learning how to be better wives, not playing around with judo.

not sure how you know it’s her “personal” belief, seems how saudi arabia demands women wear headscarfs?

“unless her hijab is made of a half inch of of rubber,” what? do you have any idea how they use the gi in judo? what does rubber have to do with anything? you should watch royce gracie in the old ufc when they were allowed to wear a gi. the one she is wearing in the picture could certainly be an advantage. the point is that rules are rules, not common courtesy.
“Accommodations for those with special needs is simply being a decent human.” you do realize that this is a competition? so when i played basketball i should have demanded a trampoline, seems how i have “white man’s disease”?

so where does she train? let’s see how she does. but i would bet that this is a stunt. the saudis probably choose judo just because they knew there was the ban on head gear.

btw, blade runner went to rice university to have extensive studies done to try and prove he has no advantage. although one researcher said he would be an average high school sprinter without the blades. that he has a 7-second advantage at 400 meters because he gets to an upright position faster. note they are running him in the 4X400 relay.

  5. So Mike, what’s in it for you? is it just plain hatred?

If the oic is becoming more tolerant to different cultures, why not?… you see the world is not just the west, and everything about the west is not right, just because they have more wealth and control of the media doesn’t mean they should be the world’s bible.

It’s people like you that keep the world going backwards, it’s time you become more open minded and embrace that there’s a whole world out there that may be bigger than yours, one that chose to wear hijabs, saris, kimonos or whatever, and that should be respected anywhere.

  6. I take very much issue with the religious requirement (and in this case actually, national requirement) of women to wear the scarves. It is archaic and disgusting. But the fact that the nation allows these women to compete and represent them, on the condition that they wear scarves, means that it seems reasonable that a concession be made.

  7. Kori,

the saudis and the iranians demand that their women wear headscarfs. therefore it becomes the responsibility of the western organizatons throughout the world to kowtow to their “archaic and disgusting” demands? that makes no sense.

“But the fact that the nation allows these women to compete and represent them,” big step i guess for the saudis, (you know because it is 1912) the keepers of the two most holiest sites in islam.
“on the condition that they wear scarves,” so why don’t they drop their condition? why should we change all our rules about safety and fairness?
“means that it seems reasonable that a concession be made.” why would that mean that? or anything? it is reasonable? so where do the concessions end?

  8. I believe Mike and like (Jane) would be pretty happy if they would ever dare harassing an observant Nun/Jew by frocing them in giving their dress code up. Or they may try to do this to a practising Hindu priest Surely, they will be in deep waters. But when it is about Muslims, they are very courageous and strong (say, like Chengis Khan) to ease their bowels through their mouth.

  9. Mike,

Does not it anger you when the West continues to rant about the rubbish of democracy, human rights, free market—all western style and when the others do not comply, then come punishment in various forms? Sanctions, propagandas, exclusion, demonisation?

You said US FP should not be compared to divine writ. But the facts are stanger and more disgusting than fiction/fables. In fact, the US FP and western FP are divine and manmade writ at the same time. How? Both these entities send their missionaries abroad, particularly to third world and Muslim countries like mine. Those sons and daughters of bithces and sows first target the poor, tribals and troubled regions to evangelise. When that is complete, then aid-based organisations and NGOs step in. They begin recruiting non-Muslims on massive scales. They also fuel the troubles and when the governments take necessary harsh measures to quell the Christianised perpetrators and their Christian instrigators, then the governments are accused of human rights violations, of course of violating rights of those who are no way humans indeed. It is given the name of religious intolerance, namely Islamic extremism, terrorism and others terminologies to demonise Muslims and Islam. Thus the way for Christianising and securing alliance is paved.

Now you should have no doubt about how the Western FP is both divine and mundane writ.

  10. Has anybody asked the woman if she wears the hijab on her own free will? If hijab and Islam were such “disguisting and archiac” things, then why are there so many Western (American) women embracing Islam more and more AND choosing to wear the hijab? It’s not all about just doing what the MAN wants you know. With the rise of educated Muslim women, society will be more inclined to let them have their say and thereby giving them respect. Watch what will happen in the next 10 years as more and more Islamic countries lose their grip on dictatorship. I say touche to the Muslim woman who wear hijab and wants to represent her country at the Olympics!! You go Sista! and Salaam to you.

  11. “Those sons and daughters of bithces and sows first target the poor, tribals and troubled regions to evangelise”

The sons of slime build their mosques of hatred and oppression in western countries.

We can all play your game.

  12. “If the oic is becoming more tolerant to different cultures, why not”

The OIC is intolerant of other cultures. The IOC however are prepared to change rules in order to accommodate muslims – muslims won’t change so everybody else has to change for them. Like most people I am weary of the endless demands of muslims.

  13. Dongo, if the muslim institutions had taken better care of their masses, the Christians would not have been able to make converts.

  14. Westerners left their comfortable lives and went out into the wilderness to stand with and give aid to neglected wretches. Even when they were slaughtered for their pains, they went back.

The Christian idea is more diffuse now – people in the medicins sans, for example, might not go to church, but their group expresses the Christian idea. Feed my lambs, he said.

  15. Dee,

“So Mike, what’s in it for you? is it just plain hatred?” sorry you are going to have to be more specific. i’m a bit of a simpleton. how is saying that we don’t need to change our rules hateful? i was against the ruling for the golfer who sued to use a cart on the PGA tour. casey something? you remember that. what did you think of that ruling? btw he was a white guy, if that makes a difference in your mind about my “hatred”.

“If the oic is becoming more tolerant to different cultures, why not?…” well, in this case it probably is not much of an accomadation. rules can be re-written. well some rules, not the hudud though, right? anyways did you see the american weightlifting governing body allowed a muslim woman to compete with her elbows covered. i think that was a bigger mistake, seems how you need to see the elbows lock in many lifts. such as tha snatch.
“you see the world is not just the west,” lol. yes i’m well aware of the demographics of the world. the west is very much in the minority.
“and everything about the west is not right,” never said it was.
“just because they have more wealth and control of the media doesn’t mean they should be the world’s bible.” lol. i agree totally. the bible shouldn’t be the world’s bible. and neither should the koran, or the hindu holy books, what are they the 12 books of the gurus? or the buddhist, etc. etc.

“It’s people like you that keep the world going backwards,” really? how so? i’m for progression and modernization. making a broad statement such as that doesn’t make it so. please elaborate. i don’t mind personal attacks, but to just flail about like that just makes you look kind of silly. how could expecting everyone to comply to the same rules be considered backwards?
“it’s time you become more open minded and embrace that there’s a whole world out there that may be bigger than yours,” so if i’m closed minded, what does that make those who claim to know “the truth”?
“one that chose to wear hijabs, saris, kimonos or whatever, and that should be respected anywhere.” you can wear what ever you what, or nothing at all. doesn’t bother me none. but if you choose to participate in sport which require a particular uniform, you may be expected to conform to the rules. don’t you think? also, you have seen the video of the guy robbing banks in philly wearing a nijab? so you can wear whatever you what in islamic countries? you don’t find it strange that there where very few burqas in afghanistan in the 70s, yet now the women all “choose” to wear them? again you do realize that it is a law in saudi arabia that women wear a hijab? so much for wearing whatever you want anywhere. you seem to be thinking in a small westernized box. try walking around iran in shorts and a short sleeved shirt.

btw…”embrace that there’s a whole world out there that may be bigger than yours” i’ll but my passport stamps up against yours any day.

doubt she will be strangled with her hijab. but you never know.

  16. dongo,

“I believe Mike and like (Jane) would be pretty happy if they would ever dare harassing an observant Nun/Jew by frocing them in giving their dress code up. Or they may try to do this to a practising Hindu priest Surely, they will be in deep waters. But when it is about Muslims, they are very courageous and strong (say, like Chengis Khan) to ease their bowels through their mouth.” dude what is up with your constant bowel movement referances? i lov ya man, you crack me up so. again, we appearently speak very different forms of english. don’t follow what it is that would make me happy. but i’m against rules being bent for any ancient religious superstition. when the sikhs cry about airport security, because they can’t expose their hair in public, that’s the men i disagree. when the michigan court ruled that they can take their little knives to high school i disagreed. have never seen a nun wanting to compete in judo in her habit, but i would be against it.

but you should try your hand at some gangsta rap….

bithces and sows…bithces and sows… notin up in here but bithces and sows…fuck da ngo’s…fuck da ngo’s…notin but bithes and ho’s.

    dee,

what do you think of dongo’s comments?

  17. Angela,

“Has anybody asked the woman if she wears the hijab on her own free will?” good question. everyone here seems to jump to the conclusion that she must be doing it of her own free will.
“If hijab and Islam were such “disguisting and archiac” things, then why are there so many Western (American) women embracing Islam more and more AND choosing to wear the hijab?” another good question. but i keep hearing this claim, “so many”. you got any stats on this “mass” convertion, sorry reverstion?
“It’s not all about just doing what the MAN wants you know. With the rise of educated Muslim women, society will be more inclined to let them have their say and thereby giving them respect.” what society are you speaking of? the west? islamic society? asian culture? all?
“Watch what will happen in the next 10 years as more and more Islamic countries lose their grip on dictatorship.” your right. it will be an interesting next 10 years. so what do you think of the new eqyptian cabinet appointed today? so what is your prediction for eqypt? you don’t think the salfist will rise and it will resemble saudi arabi or iran?
“I say touche to the Muslim woman who wear hijab and wants to represent her country at the Olympics!! You go Sista! and Salaam to you.” so are you saying she IS wearing the hijab of her own free will. not by saudi arabian law, or even cultural pressures?

    angela/dee,

what do you think of this poll? would you say it is kinda “backwards” thinking? or proper hudud? don’t worry it’s ONLY 82%.

  18. O, poor Jane, baby, that means you support the political motives of Christians. So, you must not blame Muslims for adhering to a murderous political cult.
Your hatred comes out through your writings. I am not amazed. Before, you tried to defend the US navy using a Muslims girl with a handgun as a shooting practice object with your utterly disgusting and third-rated reasoning.

    Yours

Tarzan (Not White Caucasoid, but Negroid)

  19. Mike,

Bowel reference has quite a number of utilities. First, one may not have a bedroom in the house, but for easing bowels, toilets are indispensable. Second, If your bowels are not properly cleared that may give rise to severe physical complexities, some even life threatening. Third, when you are very hungry, your bowels may shrink causing intolerable stomach pain. Fourth, when you eat too much and then try to ease, the bowels do the next job necessary. So you can see bowels are inseparable for humans and animals. If the bowels do not work, you may be unable to go to your near and dear ones, let alone public.

If you say that, then you must annul the whole Olympic ceremony forever. Because, it is a pagan ceremony and hence has deep touch of religion, older than any of the Abrahamic ones. Recently, a Muslim athlete (probably Malaysian) was pregnant and she did join the sprinting. But she could not win. If that lady who is 8 months pregnant can be permitted to do a very much physically demanding job like running, why can’t a woman wearing a certain dress be permitted? At least, that will be no way harmful for the lady and if she has a child or is going to have one?

Well, wearing a certain dress is no sin if that does not cause others to look at you with contempt. For example, women can’t were swimsuit in/near churches or synagogues. If they do, they are not wearing for the namesake, but just to provoke the pious. And where does it say in the Judaeo-Christian (!?) foundation USA and the West that the religious should be provoked just for some sick fun? And is the Muslim dress code more offensive than the Sikhs carrying daggers? You may now claim that under the hijab, there may be bombs as used by “Islamic” suicide bombers. This can happen to anyone. Remember, when Indira the “Bitch” Gandhi was killed, her bodyguards were wearing Sikh dresses. There was anti-Sikh roits but neither they nor Sikhism was termed as a cult of killers. And the RSS, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena—all wear Hindu religious dresses, conduct pogroms against others even low-caste Hindus and give the slogan “Har Har Mahadev”. Recently, Buddhists have been killing Muslims in Arakan and in Sri Lanka. But even then Buddhism is not termed as a terrorist religion rather a religion of peace. Hindus and Chrisitians kill Muslims and others but are not terrorists nor religions or terror. Only Islam and Muslims are guilty.

BTW, if you take a look at Sikhs, you will find many wearing or retaining their religious symbols. As for your comment, you may never see any nun pataking judo probably. Neither may you see a Mollah taking part in judo/karate with religious dress. But you will also see the so-called “born again” Christians taking part in sports. Shawn Michales who always wears a cross terms himsel a born again Christian; he even boasted his nephew joining the murderous US forces in Iraq war. John Cena, after the swine Laden met his deserved end, was rallying around the flag; he was informing the audience as if US had achieved its second independence. George Foreman is a born again Christian. They do not take part with religious garb but openly express their beliefs; the wrestlers with supremacistic attitudes often.

I don’t like gangsta rap. In fact, I don’t like the Afro-American pronunciation of English. That seems to be rape of a language to me. I follow the Scottish English. My favourite band is Petshop Boys.

Of course, Mike. What else do you suggest me to call them? You allege Muslims to promoting Shariah, demanding special treatment, killing people, waging violence and what not? Let me inform and ask you: when the Colonial powers came, they introduced missionaries first. Then came traders and then rulers. During their rule, the missionaries were a tool to prolong and sustain the domination. The same conspiracies go on unabated to date albeit with new names and more sugarcoating. Show me one example where Muslims have called in other Muslims to replace the existing government while living in non-Muslim nations. There are calls for Shariah, but that should be for Muslims’ personal laws and their interactions with others. We also have Hindu family laws, Muslim family laws; those never clash with our state laws which is a vicious gift from our bastard British colonial fathers whom we ourselves gave birth to. And I think I have given you enough justification and information about what the missionaries do in third world countries. If you want, I will repeat it.

  20. it’s 6am here. couldn’t sleep. nut have to give it another shop. too much to address to night. talk to ya tomarrow.

    how’s it go?????

in a restaurant, in the westend town, call the police there’s a mad man around, kicking at chairs and knocking down tables.

it’s a deadend world, with eastend boys and westend girls.

a bit decadent for a muslim, plus aren’t those guys fags?

i’ll be the brains you be the brawn….lol.

  21. “when the Colonial powers came, they introduced missionaries first. Then came traders and then rulers. During their rule, the missionaries were a tool to prolong and sustain the domination.”

    Yep, that’s how islam spread.

  22. dongo,

i’m not saying you can’t be religious and an athele. tebow. go gators. you can wear whatever you want in the opening ceremony. i’m starting to worry about your reading comprehention. for your clients sake. “it is a pagan ceremony” great i love pagans ceremonies. what a pregnant woman has to do with dress code i have no idea?

“Well, wearing a certain dress is no sin if that does not cause others to look at you with contempt.” so if someone looks at me with contempt for what i’m wearing, it’s a sin on me? your god is as crazy as you.

“And where does it say in the Judaeo-Christian (!?) foundation USA and the West that the religious should be provoked just for some sick fun?” it’s called the first amendment. freedom of speech. it’s not judaeo-christian. quite the opposite. it is seperation of religion and state. ya’ll should try it sometime.

yeah i’m familiar with the assasination of ganhdi. so?

“And is the Muslim dress code more offensive than the Sikhs carrying daggers?” no, but neither are offensive. it’s just when they clash with existing rules, like no headgear in judo or no knives in schools, it shouldn’t be on the rules to change. it should be on the individual to conform to the rules or forgo the event. it seems pretty simple to me. not sure what the WWE has to do with anything? i mean i love a good tangent as much as anyone. but i seriously think you are losing your mind?

“BTW, if you take a look at Sikhs, you will find many wearing or retaining their religious symbols.” yes i know. they hold up security at the airport crying about their hair can’t be seen in public. crazy, don’t you think. so if a sikh says he must be allowed to wear his dagger during his judo match, should that be allowed?????????

“You allege Muslims to promoting Shariah, demanding special treatment, killing people, waging violence and what not?” YES. and i post evidence to support those allegation. thus they are fact. muslims clearly do all of the above. and you know it.

“Only Islam and Muslims are guilty.” i’ve never said anything of the sort. i think all religions are bad. they divide people and nations. you can have any mishmash of laws you like in bangladesh. that must be why you are the superpower you are. here in america we are supposed to be one nation with one set of laws, for all of our citizens. not one set of laws for this religion or that religion. and if the muslims mean to change that, “There are calls for Shariah, but that should be for Muslims’ personal laws and their interactions with others.” fuck that. shove your sharia up your ass. if you come to america, become and american and follow our laws. we are not the ioc. we will not kowtow to your crazy demands.

jesus fucking christ. the colonials again? don’t ask me why ya’ll didn’t throw the british out sooner. or why you even let them in? yes i’m familiar with the jesuits. why don’t ya’ll do this. pull out of the un. ban ngos and missionaries. don’t take foriegn aid from anyone, the imf the world bank, etc. certainly not from america or the west or any organizations we fund. i guess you can beg the gulf states to give you some oil money. i’m sure your fellow muslims will be very generous. here’s an idea. put sanctions on us for our ‘murderous” invasion of iraq. get the arabs to stop selling us oil and the chinese to stop selling us everything else. that’s the only way we will come up with a alternitive energy source and re-build our manufacturing base.

“I don’t like gangsta rap” ieght.

    on the lighter side

    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-10-10/sports/chi-photo-finish-woman-gives-birth-after-running-and-walking-marathon-20111010_1_chicago-marathon-contractions-baby-girl

  23. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19111548

yeah that’s what i thought. do you think they even bothered to train her for a couple of months? 90 seconds! poor girl used as a propaganga tool. well she got a free trip to london. that was probably cool.

looks like sarah attar is an american. go figure. and so much for “those choosing to wear the hijab”. she runs for pepperdine without a headscarf and in a tanktop.

  24. Sarah Attar has dual citizenship. Sometimes the O committee allows marginal athletes from under represented countries to compete. Tahmina Kohistani from Afghanistan is also in track, only Afg. female there.

  25. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/14/sports/olympics/sarah-attar-is-a-saudi-arabian-trailblazer-by-way-of-the-us.html

“Some photos showed her competing for Pepperdine wearing a tank top, shorts and no head scarf. In Saudi Arabia, most women cover their heads and faces in public and wear a black cloak called an abaya.”

“As a sophomore at Pepperdine, Attar ran the 1,500 meters in 5 minutes 30.51 seconds and the 3,000 in 11:37.41. While those times are below Olympic qualifying standards, Attar will compete under a clause that permits some athletes below the standards to compete with the aim of broadening Olympic participation”

  26. Well, Mike, I received an overall 8.5 (with a 9 in reading section) in IELTS. I think the Cambridge University must be crazy in granting me that mark. You better ask them.

There is only one God without a second, the creator of you, me and the whole universe. So, when you say” your god is as crazy as you”, that blame befalls you too. We see the same sun, after all.

Don’t lie Mike, this is a big hypocrisy of your nation. Whenever there is any mention of US FP or culture, there is only one rant: the Judaeo-Christian values, basis, foundation, ethics of America (and the West). Freedom of Speech? Uh, just you said to shove Shariah up my ass, I say enter Freedom of Speech into your rectum and then prize that up by a thorny iron mace (heated red and rubbed with naga peppers) with superhuman force upto your vocal chord through your rectum. No, I am not losing my mind. This is why I am still replying to your posts.

So? Wouldn’t you term the Sikhs and Sikhism as killers and killer cult? They also want special treatment, murder people, blew up aircraft (Air India Flight 182). During the heydays of the Sikh empire, they murdered and enslaved millions of innocents. During the partition, they conducted almost similar rampages. In independent India, they waged terrorism.
How nasty and lowly a liar you are Mike! You just said Muslims did all the above and now you say that you have never said such things. How low can you get? Yes, never kowtow to anybody’s demands, but just rejecting Muslims’ and whenever possible, harass them to your hearts’ content. And when Americans go abroad, they will show no respect to others, will always show their masterly attitude, when caught for any misdeed, the US embassy will intervene, resulting in release of that fellow. You want evidence: just take a look at Raymond Davis case.

And when you say you give evidences, those are as one-sided as always.

Even if all the Muslims untie, they will not be able to put sanction on the US. You know why? Many causes. First, the disunity. Second, the bastard Muslims’ greed for white women. 3rd, Muslims’ genetic trend of internecine clash. 4th, some Muslims’ trend for selling out to the West.
And the West will never tolerate oil supplies to be ceased from the ME. By this means or that, the supplies will resume, whatever may the costs be, even if genocide. ,

  27. Anybody else suspect dongo does a lot of cocaine?

  28. I liked the Olympics better when it tried to be a completely amateur event. The commie countries used to cheat by entering state supported athletes.

A person with fake feet should be in a race for fake footed people.

  29. Jane,

Darling, I don’t like to be nasty with women. Therefore, I am not giving nasty answer to your trash.

I don’t smoke cocaine. Yes, I do have some smoking habits, for example, cigarette comes first. Then comes marijuana. I also take quite a lot alcohol. But all these nectars end up either in smoke or as body fluid. So far I know, cocaine is not very common in my country; and my mother is always very angry with me for my smoking habits. I don’t have the guts to smoke/drink in her presence. If she catches me doing those, she will just disown me and kick me out of house forever. I don’t like my father but have a deep respect for my mom. My father has left us for other women 14 years ago. That swine is still alive. To get relief of my pangs and also to quench my hunger and thirst, I resorted to smoking and drinking. Since my childhood, I have witnessed my mom taking excrutiating pains in raising me. I don’t want to lose her.

Hope I did not offend you.

Have your say!
