Rep. Joe Walsh: Muslims “trying to kill Americans”

Rep. Joe Walsh: Muslims “trying to kill Americans”

Rep. Joe Walsh has a history of bigoted anti-Islam and anti-Muslim statements. In a recent town hall the Congressman didn’t even have the decency to correct a man in the crowd who described Islam as a “dangerous” threat to the USA,

“I’m looking for some godly men and women in the Senate, in the Congress, who will stand in the face of the danger of Islam in America without political correctness,” the man said.  “Islam is not the peaceful, loving religion we hear about.”

The line was met with applause.

Perhaps he was fearful of doing the right thing, considering all of the applause that the crowd member received. If that is the case Walsh is not only an appeaser of bigotry but also an amoral coward.

Instead, Walsh stoked the populist flames of anti-Muslim sentiments further to a crowd that clearly wasn’t able to differentiate between extremists and the vast majority of Muslims,

Walsh responded by asserting that radical Muslims are “trying to kill Americans every week,” and that “it’s not a matter of ‘if’ – it’s a matter of ‘when’” a 9/11-like attack will happen again.

“All I can tell you about the ‘when’ is, the people who would want to do this to America are trying to get their hands on weapons that will make 9/11 look like child’s play.”

Added Walsh: “So we had better be alert to this.  And as [the audience member] said … ‘Enough with political correctness!”

The crowd, which was mostly white, applauded.

This fear-mongering and over exaggeration of the threat from Islamist extremists is exactly what we don’t need from politicians. It promotes ignorance, bigotry, sectarianism and divisiveness.

U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh went on another anti-Islam tirade Wednesday, calling for an end to “political correctness” in dealing with the “radical strain of Islam” he described as an imminent danger to America.

“It’s a real threat,” Walsh said at a town hall meeting in Elk Grove Village, Ill.  “And it’s a threat that is much more at home now than it was right after 9/11.”

“It’s here,” he continued, referring to “radical Islam” in the suburbs of Chicago. “It’s in Elk Grove, it’s in Addison, it’s in Elgin. It’s here.”

The remarks — captured on tape — came in response to an Egyptian-American audience member who said Muslims are taking over America and charged the freshman congressman to take a more aggressive stance against the religion.

“I’m looking for some godly men and women in the Senate, in the Congress, who will stand in the face of the danger of Islam in America without political correctness,” the man said.  “Islam is not the peaceful, loving religion we hear about.”

The line was met with applause.

“Can you say ‘Fort Hood’?” Walsh continued, referring to the 2009 shooting at the Texas military base that left 13 dead and 29 wounded.  A report concluded the shooter, Nidal Malik Hasan, was a homegrown terrorist.

“Your government was so afraid of doing its job, so afraid of offending Islam, that right in front of our noses, they saw what was happening at Fort Hood and because the government’s politically correct, Americans died.”

The Tea Party Republican, who serves on the Homeland Security Committee, has been known for his incendiary remarks since winning his House seat in 2010. He set off a media firestorm last month when he appeared to question the heroism of his opponent, Democrat Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq war vet who lost both her legs in combat.

  1. Islam is a threat.

“It promotes ignorance, bigotry, sectarianism and divisiveness.”

As does islam (and any pretty much every other religion)

  2. An Egyptian American man said this. Where do you think the Copts and others who have fled the muslims went?
They are sprinkled all over the West. Here, they can stand up and speak.

  3. It IS a case of when and not if.

That’s a good comeback, Jane. Sectarianism indeed. Hatred, indeed.

  4. anon, it was a reply to the hypocrisy here.

Islam, try to meet us half way.

  5. It’s interesting that the police trainer that delivers anti-Muslim training in Florida is from Jordan, and the man who made this anti-Muslim statement is from Egypt. I agree with Annon, these people are not allowed to speak in their respective countries and here people will listen to them. In cases like this Muslim attitudes against non-Muslims come back to bite them in the rear. Perhaps if Muslims in other countries would adopt the peaceful tolerant attitude so decried by Islam then these types of statement would not happen. Calling the representative a Bigot or an amoral coward does nothing to lessen the obvious hurt done to these two men while residing in Islamic Countries and only strengthens the views espoused by people such as Mr. Walsh. These attitudes will not go away until Islam rids itself of the bigotry it demonstrates daily against non-Muslims in various and numerous regions over the world.

  7. i’m sick & tired of everybody attacking muslims like a punch bag, it’s very shameful to Americans with the best standards in the world to allow such thing like that, when a killing in the Us takes place in a school, theaters, or in a crowed, they never refer to background of being radical christian or American terrorist, it’s only muslims who
singled out and called all kinds of names, i like to know who judge the citizen of United States to be an American, is it a certain criteria you’ve to fit in, do you need to have blond hair with blue eyes, we all know we all came in from different part of the world and there is no true American in this case but the native Indians.
America stop listening to sick individuals like Joe Walsh and not to allow people like that with there personal hate and interest, instead we should reach out one to another building this country together and make America strong
and the best with the example of having Barrack Obama as a president of United States to show this country America it’s about love and peace, it’s not about hate or what religion or what background you from.

  8. “they never refer to background of being radical christian”

They do if they are a radical christian.

  9. mike e,

eric rudolph is a christian terrorist.

“i like to know who judge the citizen of United States to be an American” the constitution and legislative law. if you are born in america you are an american automatically. you can immigrant and take a citizen test and pledge and become american. i think if you are born on a millitary base overseas to american parents you will be an american. not sure on that one? propbably other ways too.

“there is no true American in this case but the native Indians.” bullshit. i’m a true american, you really need to read the constitution.

“we should reach out one to another building this country together and make America strong” agreed. well i think we are already strong. but we have to have some agreement as to how to do that. if you think sharia will make america strong(er) i would have to disagree with you whole heartedly. if you think sueing disneyland because you want to wear a headscaf, sueing electrolux, sueing a school district, sueing a hospital, sueing ambercrombie and finch, sueing a mattress store, starting a fight at an amusment park because they wouldn’t let you wear a headscarf on rollercoasters is making america strong(er), again i would have to disagree with you whole heartedly.

    how about these americans?

  10. many peoples misunderstand about islam..islam is not teaching about terrorism.”Islam does not support terrorism under any circumstances. Terrorism goes against every principle in Islam. If a Muslim engages in terrorism, he is not following Islam. He may be wrongly using the name of Islam for political or financial gain.allah said in quran , ‘Do not kill women or children or non-combatants and do not kill old people or religious people….’”A so-called Muslim who kills innocent people is not a real Muslim – as a Muslim is defined as “one who submits to the Creator of mankind, the heavens and the earth.” God commands people to be kind and do good deeds, to take care of the poor and less fortunate, and to protect innocent people from harm or injustice. Therefore, if someone kills an innocent person, they are not “submitting to the will of God” and cannot be considered a Muslim.

  11. It is not “who is a muslim and who is not” It is a question of governments allowing disorder; not prosecuting wrong doers.

  12. shakina,

what verse is that? don’t remember ever reading that. but my memory isn’t what it used to be.

“they are not “submitting to the will of God” and cannot be considered a Muslim.” so by that reasoning no muslim has ever done anything wrong? because once you don’t sumit to the will of god you are no lnonger muslim? come on, that makes no sense. so if sharia only applies to muslims, or more specifically the hudud portion of sharia, how could it ever be applied? clearly stealing is not submitting to the will of god. so the thief would no longer be a muslim, according to your logic. right?so how could muhammad cut of non-muslims hands? perplexing isn’t it?

  13. Jane

“They do if they are a radical christian.”

    You are so funny!

  14. Did someone say constitution?

Oh, you mean the one America used to have

  15. Mike

“o by that reasoning no muslim has ever done anything wrong? because once you don’t sumit to the will of god you are no lnonger muslim? come on, that makes no sense.”

I think she means on the whole, that the religion is to submit to the will of God. People of all faiths commit ‘sin’ but there is a difference between lying on a resume and committing acts against humanity.

    Confirmation bias at its’ best
