Muslim group: Republican ‘Islamophobia machine’ encouraging violent attacks

14 August 2012 General 15 Comments Email This Post Email This Post

Following an acid bomb being hurled at a Muslim school in the Chicago suburb of Lombard, a spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) told Raw Story that the number of attacks on American Muslims has escalated recently due in part to the Republican Party’s “Islamophobia machine” encouraging a tiny minority of extremists toward increasingly violent behaviors.

About 50 people were inside the Lombard school building for Ramadan prayers when the acid bomb exploded, according to area media. The unknown attacker reportedly filled a 7-Up bottle with acid and other materials, then threw it at a window. Nobody was injured, but worshipers said they heard a loud explosion when the bomb went off. CAIR asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Tuesday morning to immediately begin searching for the individual responsible.

For Illinois Muslims, Monday night’s acid bombing marks the second attack on a Muslim-affiliated installation in less than a week. Police arrested 51-year-old David Conrad last weekend after he allegedly opened fire on a mosque in Morton Grove, Illinois, narrowly missing a security guard as worshipers prayed inside. The FBI said it would leave the investigation of the mosque shooting to local law enforcement.

“I don’t know what’s going on, other than it being the month of Ramadan with heightened activity at mosques nationwide,” Ibrahim Hooper, communications director for CAIR, told Raw Story. “I think most of these things are related to the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in our society, generated by a well financed Islamophobia machine… The same kind of people cited by [Norway mass murderer] Anders Breivik in his manifesto.”

The shooting incident occurred just hours after Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), a tea party favorite, told an audience that Muslims are “much more” of a threat to Americans than ever before, adding that people of the Islamic faith are “trying to kill Americans every week.” His comments followed a conspiracy theory spun by Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN), who called for an investigation into whether Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood is secretly controlling an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a Democratic member of Congress.

Though some well known Republicans like House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH)Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) criticized Bachmann’s call for an anti-Muslim witch-hunt, many Republican Party leaders defended it, including a top spokesman for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Both recent attacks in Illinois appear to be part of a growing emergence of extreme anti-Islamic sentiment across the country.

Just two months ago in Dearborn, Michigan, a group of Christian missionaries hijacked an Arab-American festival, walking through it carrying a pig’s head on a pike and signs insulting the Prophet Mohammed. In California last week, an unknown person hurled pig feet at the site of a proposed mosque. In Rhode Island one week ago, a vandal smashed the sign in front of Masjid Al-Islam in North Smithfield. In Oklahoma on Sunday, vandals fired paintballs at the doors of the Grand Mosque of Oklahoma City. And a suspicious fire that destroyed a mosque in Joplin, Missouri — the second suspicious blaze there in about a month — is still under investigation.

In the wake of these events, CAIR advised Muslim-American communities to begin taking their security more seriously. The group recommended installing video surveillance at mosques and schools, asking for additional police patrols, meeting with elected officials, documenting suspicious people and making off-side backups of important records.

“Whenever you have people with some measure of respect in society smearing Muslims and Islam, it’s going to have a negative impact in terms of these kinds of incidents,” Hooper concluded. “[They should] act responsibly and tone down this anti-Muslim rhetoric. Unfortunately, it seems that Islamophobia is now a plank of the Republican Party’s political platform. It’s really disturbing. When I get a call about another incident of anti-Muslim hatred by an elected official, I don’t even have to ask what party they’re from. It’s always the Republican Party.”

  1. I find it interesting that these “attacks” on Mosques seem to always take the form of vandalism. Whereas attacks on non-Muslims by Muslims in their Churchs, Temples and Synagogs are almost always lethal resulting in the killing and maiming of men, women and children.Yet a paintball attack, a torn sign or someone throwing a bottle with acid at a Mosque, all “attacks” where no one was injured. Somehow rises to the level of a machine gun attack at a Sikh temple where six people were killed.

  2. “attack at a Sikh temple where six people were killed.”

The islamophobia industry is claiming that one too.

  3. The vandalism could be the prelim to worse things. Many of these cases turn out to be that the mosque has made a convert out of some dubious person who has become offended. Amazing that in this land of surv. video we don’t see arrests. Or maybe the arrests are supressed.

“the number of attacks on American Muslims has escalated recently due in part to the Republican Party’s “Islamophobia machine” encouraging a tiny minority of extremists toward increasingly violent behaviors.”

so does hooper think that maybe the increase in islamic terrorist attacks could be “do in part” to the koran? you know because it says to cut off their heads and fight in the way of allah, etc etc. how about the treatment of women within the islamic world? you know because the koran says you can beat your wife. because for some strange reason it takes two women to equal one man when witnessing a will being signed. maybe some would interpert that to mean women are less important then a man?

  5. speaking of irresponsible remarks:

[4.34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

[5.33] The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His apostle and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement,

[8.12] When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.

[9.5] So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

[18.74] So they went on until, when they met a boy, he slew him. (Musa) said: Have you slain an innocent person otherwise than for manslaughter? Certainly you have done an evil thing.

[24.2] (As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the last day, and let a party of believers witness their chastisement.

how about the verse on the muslim brotherhood’s emblem:

[8.60] And prepare against them what force you can and horses tied at the frontier, to frighten thereby the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them, whom you do not know (but) Allah knows them; and whatever thing you will spend in Allah’s way, it will be paid back to you fully and you shall not be dealt with unjustly.

  6. Islamophobia is not inspired by the mean old Republicans, it is a reaction to the actions and words of muslims. The muslims are putting on quite a show for the world. If Reps can use it of course they will.

  7. Your Muslim propaganda machine is running right on schedule. Give me a break, a picture of a beautiful little girl for the headline? What is that suppose to insinuate? That Republicans want to harm this little girl? What a load of crap you are spewing. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I read this stuff on this site and I realize these articles are perpetuating the problem not the solution.

  8. I see that the Rightwing flamers are alight on the comments here.

Yeah, sure: the “Mooslums” are exaggerating the threats to their community; conflating “vandalism” with terrorist attacks.

Did they invent Rep. King’s McCarthyist anti-Muslim investigation: which refuses to investigate anything OTHER than Islamic terror?

Did they dream up Rep. Walsh’s assertion that “there is a radical strain of Islam in this country – it’s not just over there – trying to kill Americans every week…?” Do they come online and troll these sites, claiming (as some of you) that their holy book exhorts murdering non-believers: WHOLLY ignoring that the Old Testament commands that people who do not attend church on Sunday, be stoned to death?

You flamers need to get out more. Your tinfoil peeking out from under your tri-corner hats.

And no…don’t bother flaming me. I’ve got better things to do than engage in pissing matches with racists. Next!

  9. Muslims, understand this. Your ability to deceive 300,000,000 Americans is coming to an end.

Your time here is over. Take your psychopathic Islamofascist phantasm, Allah, and get out of my country. NOW!

  10. When you take a look at the stats Muslims are correct when they state they account for a small percentage of terrorist incidents. The trouble is that the vast majority of terrorist incidents is simply property damage. However, when one simply looks at deadly terrorist incidents Muslim terrorists dominate this category.

  11. thornsoftristan,

“I see that the Rightwing flamers are alight on the comments here.” who’s that? you talking to me? you talking to me? i’m pretty far from the right wing. i’m a libertarian.

“Yeah, sure: the “Mooslums” are exaggerating the threats to their community; conflating “vandalism” with terrorist attacks.”

“Did they invent Rep. King’s McCarthyist anti-Muslim investigation: which refuses to investigate anything OTHER than Islamic terror?” no. so write your congress person and ask him/her to convine some herings on OTHER terror threats. why don’t you write keith ellison.

“Did they dream up Rep. Walsh’s assertion that “there is a radical strain of Islam in this country – it’s not just over there – trying to kill Americans every week…?”” no.
“Do they come online and troll these sites, claiming (as some of you) that their holy book exhorts murdering non-believers:” usually they say the opposite
“WHOLLY ignoring that the Old Testament commands that people who do not attend church on Sunday, be stoned to death?” no muslims don’t ignore the old testement. in fact muhammad him self imposed the “divine verse of stoning” from the old testement. haven’t you ever read the hadith where he stones the jews?

“You flamers need to get out more. Your tinfoil peeking out from under your tri-corner hats.” who’s a flamer? how do you know someones sexual orientation from this comment page?

“And no…don’t bother flaming me. I’ve got better things to do than engage in pissing matches with racists.” flaming you? i don’t no what that means.
“Next!” lol. is that a soup nazi referance? come back one year.

  12. […] Muslim group: Republican ‘Islamophobia machine’ encouraging violent attacks […]

  13. I wonder what it is like to flee to US and be able to go outside on Fridays and not be afraid that muslims incited by their worship services will attack you.

  14. Anon,

So, according to your own logic, the Christianophobia among Muslims is a reaction to Christians’ actions and words, right? What about Indian Hindus including Hindu civilians massacring Christian converts and foreign missionaries? Why did the BJP, VHP, RSS, Bajrang Dal prohibited and effectively threatened baptising?

    Mike,

The Quran does not say to cut anyone’s head off whenever s/he meets any Muslim. This is prescribed in armed warfare and for an armed combatant, not a helpless human. And the verses you quoted (because you are always lightyear like prompt in demonising Islam and Muslims) are described for military conducts as well. I know you will have your bullshit ready to reply. I have my ones too. Why don’t you refer to the punishment for fornication in the Judaic and Christian texts? Because that harms your third-rater mission of buggery. Well, a men can beat his wife if the wife shows violent behaviour; but if that behaviour is in self-defence because the husband is abusive, that is no fault. In this case the women have full right to defence. Women are required to be two may be because such rules apply in division of properties too, i.e. two sisters will get tantamount to one brother’s share. Or, may be that they are weaker than men. Now you should not question why women are weaker than men. Show one woman who has militarily led successful world changing expeditions, formed an empire, discovered new lands, or say prophets? European queens who waged military operations, were not present on fronts themselves.

If women were less important than men, none would have been borne on earth.

Such revelations came to the Children of Israel who were fighting the idolaters. So, what is wrong with Muslims and Islam? When the Jews deviated from the Lord’s shown path, they were also punished; same is happening to Muslims. And these are for military purposes. What is unjust with directions for military behaviour, Mike?

The idolaters were said to be slain if they broke the peace treaties with Muslims, not a license for wholesale massacres. In the ealier part “So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush”, means even if the idolaters break treaties, Muslims should not fight them in Ramadan. You can also see in the latter parts of the verse “then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” In the earlier parts, “” However, thanks for fully quoting the verse.

If someone accompanying Prophet Musa (pbuh) has killed an innocent, why are you bringing it here? Does that mean he was following Islamic orders?

I can’t read the Arabic written on that emblem. Despite that, I won’t trust you as you often make distorted presenting.

The 8-60 verse is also a military one. I guess I have told about military conducts.

  15. Fartman,

Your ability to fool and if not fooled then forcefully fooling the entire world has been much longer in existence than Muslims. But it is waning though may take longer time; and that erosion will be the most painful anal fissure pigs like you will experience.

I don’t oppose kicking Muslims out of the Americas, Oceania and Europe. But before kicking Muslims out, also kick out each and every non-native American from American, Oceanian and European soils.

Have your say!
