[UPDATED 6:30 P.M.]

The Council on American-Islamic Relations today requested involvement of the Federal Government in this incident. An email newsletter sent out by the organization to subscribers Monday afternoon contained a link to this story and similar stories published by other news organizations.

The newsletter stated, “The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is today calling on the FBI to consider federal charges against a Connecticut man who allegedly threatened to assault a Muslim woman in that state because of her religious heritage.”

[ORIGINAL STORY]

A man who verbally insulted a 55-year-old woman because of her ethnicity and threatened to punch her while she was waiting in line for a prescription at the Walgreen’s pharmacy was arrested Saturday evening at his home and charged with hate crimes by West Hartford Police.

Michael John Germain, 68, was observed making “rude, offensive, and obnoxious comments for no reason” to a woman who was waiting in line at the pharmacy, said Lt. Jeff Rose of the West Hartford Police. The incident was reported by a pharmacy employee as well as the victim.

Many of the comments allegedly made by Germain included obsecenities which cannot be printed, Rose said. According to Rose, Germain was also heard saying, “I don’t like Muslims … get the hell out of here,” and also threatened to punch her.

The man did not touch the woman, Rose said, but he followed her out to the parking lot, still swearing and yelling to her, and got into his car and drove away before police arrived.

The victim, who according to Rose was “upset and crying,” was able to get the man’s license plate and he was later arrested at his home on Mountain Rd.

According to police, the woman did not provoke the man in any way.

Germain was charged with second-degree breach of peace, hate crimes, and second-degree threatening. He was released on $10,000 non-surety bond, and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Sept. 27.

  1. why federal charges? How does that work in the USA?

  2. cair always calls for the fbi. well except when they are questioning muslims. but there won’t be any federal charges. but i think it works that the feds can come in when someone’s civil rights are allegedly being trampled. it goes back to jim crow in the south. when states or local authorities don’t protect civil rights the feds have the authority to come in and inforce federal law. in more recent times the rodney king incident is an example. the officers where aquited on the local level for police brutality, then the feds charged them with violating his civil rights, and they where convicted.

  3. Amusing that CAIR is so quick to call the FBI which it professes not to trust. Sends out flyers – resist the FBI etc.

This man uttered threats. Can’t threaten. Can’t hit or spit.
