Wingnut Bloggers Claimed Photos Showed ‘Muslims Dragging Stevens’ – Actually Showed Libyan Rescuers

Wingnut Bloggers Claimed Photos Showed ‘Muslims Dragging Stevens’ – Actually Showed Libyan Rescuers

by Charles Johnson

New reports from Libya confirm that the Libyan citizens the right wing blogosphere claimed were “dragging Ambassador Stevens’ body through the streets like Somalia” were actually trying to save his life: Video Appears to Show Libyans Retrieving Envoy’s Body.

Labeled the work of Fahd al-Bakkosh, the video centers on what appears to be the same tall, narrow window that witnesses have described as Mr. Stevens’s last exit. The witnesses said residents drawn to the scene had forced open the window and found Mr. Stevens behind a locked iron gate, pulled him out and taken him to the hospital. In the video, none say anything that shows ill will.

“I swear, he’s dead,” one Libyan says, peering in.

“Bring him out, man! Bring him out,” another says.

“The man is alive. Move out of the way,” others shout. “Just bring him out, man.”

“Move, move, he is still alive!”

“Alive, Alive! God is great,” the crowd erupts, while someone calls to bring Mr. Stevens to a car.

Mr. Stevens was taken to a hospital, where a doctor tried to revive him, but said he was all but dead on arrival.

More info from the AP: Libyan Witness: Stevens Was Breathing When Found.

A group of people gathered as several men pulled the seemingly lifeless form from the room. They saw he was alive and a foreigner, though no one recognized him as Stevens, al-Bakoush said.

He was breathing and his eyelids flickered, he said. “I tested his pulse and he was alive,” he said “No doubt. His face was blackened and he was like a paralyzed person.”

Video taken by al-Bakoush and posted on YouTube shows Stevens being carried out of a small dark room through a window with a raised shutter and being laid on the floor. One man touches his neck to feel for a pulse. Some of the men shout, “God is great.”

The video has been authenticated since Stevens’ face is clearly visible and he is wearing the same white t-shirt seen in authenticated photos of him being carried away one another man’s shoulders, presumably moments later.

Right wing bloggers almost universally seized on early photos of this chaotic scene, jumped to the false conclusion that these were the people who killed Ambassador Stevens, and promptly started ranting about barbaric Muslims.

In fact, those photographs actually showed Libyans rushing Stevens to the hospital.

Recapping some of the right wing blogs’ reactions:

The stupidest person on the Internet, Jim Hoft, demonstrated again that he’s also one of the most hateful people on the Internet: ISLAMISTS DRAG DEAD BODY of US AMBASSADOR THROUGH the STREETS of BENGHAZI! (Updated) …Another Photo! | the Gateway Pundit.

Hoft went even further, repeating a disgusting bogus report from a Lebanese tabloid: Horror!… Lebanese Reports: US Ambassador Raped Before His Murder | the Gateway Pundit.

Hateblogger Pamela Geller is even more vile than Hoft, though. This is how Geller portrays the video showing the rescuers trying to save Ambassador Stevens:VIDEO SHOWS US AMBASSADOR BEING DRAGGED FROM SAFEHOUSE IN LIBYA BY MUSLIMS SCREAMING ALLAHU AKBAR.

John Hinderaker of Powerline posted a photo of Stevens being rushed to the hospital with this comment:

I can’t tell from the photo whether he was dead at this time or not. I hope so…

Michael Patrick Leahy at also posted one of the photos of Stevens being rescued, with this comment:

Photographic images told a different story of the crowd’s conduct, however. Rather than aiding Ambassador Stevens, the crowd appeared to be dragging him through the streets. One image showed a member of the crowd carrying an unidentified man that appears to be Ambassador Stevens on his shoulders like a hunting trophy.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

  1. You forgot to mention Greta Susteren at FOX News:

  2. A story from Lebanon of him being raped and dragged started this rumor off.

  3. “false conclusion that these were the people who killed Ambassador Stevens, and promptly started ranting about barbaric Muslims.”

yeah, well muslims didn’t drag him through the streets. great. no barbarism took place then. burning down the embassy and killing 4 people. no biggie. they didn’t drag the body through the streets. allah is the most merciful, the most forgiving. and muslims follow “the religion of peace”.

  4. speaking of draging people through the streets

  5. Mike watching two children being beaten to death is not my cup of tea so I had to stop the video. It is hard to formulate how I think about groups of people with the mindset shown on this video. The fact that there are such large numbers of them is saddening. I am very glad I live so far away from people and places like this.

As to the story, it was easy to think the Ambassador’s body was being abused, the compound was attacked with bombs and guns. It was not a stretch to think that his body would be found to be a trophy by some. I am glad they were trying to help him, but they could have helped him more by staying outside the compound and not killing him or the three others on his staff. I remember the photos of what they did to the body of their former leader.

  6. at one point a cop takes a stick out of one guys hand. but then they let them have it back. a little kid, like 8 maybe at the most. takes a stick and starts beating one of the bodies. then they throw them on a trailer being pulled by a tractor and drive them through town. when they pull the bodies off the trailor, they just go plunk on their heads. no harm i quess, they have already been beaten to death, but the lifelessness of the bodies is quite the image. then they string them up by their feet. not quite an inverse crucifixtion, but how nows how long they left them there.

    maybe they were fornicators.

[24.2] (As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the last day, and let a party of believers witness their chastisement.

  7. I refreshed my memory reading about it, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and the mob jumped them. The Pakistan public was enraged with the killers, for a while. Wonder if they received any penalty at all.

Last thing I read about he Rimsha case was they gave the imam 2 weeks for tampering with evidence.

Ah, the sweet justices of muslim rule. Pak poster suggested putting all imams in jail for a yr to see if the prosperity and peace of the country increased.

  8. The attacks were planned in advance, I wonder how many US muslims and mosques knew it was in the works. Some of them knew about 9/11 and the first wwtc bombing, little leaks. schoolboy talking, etc.

Not sure about Greta, but Nancy Grace is a disgrace.

  9. ccc,

you are right. it is not without precident, muslims dragging bodies through the street.

you might not want to veiw these either.

  10. wow, i really am a bad speller. precedent. oh well.

  11. mike,

    You wrote,

First off, where is Charles Johnson in anyway denying that the embassy was burned down by an angry mob? No where. But the people who tried desperately to save Stevens were not part of that mob. Second of all, even if they did, it would not prove people like Geller to be correct, in their views when it comes to Muslims in general or Islam. Third, you don’t care that these people tried to save Stevens, contrary to what “counter Jihadists” were saying?

  12. mike,

Oh, one more thing, has Jim Hoft, Pamela Geller, or John Hinderaker, retracted what they said about the people in that photo who tried to saved Stevens Life, and admitted that they were wrong, and apologized?

  13. I am not usually squeamish but adults are supposed to take care of children, not kill them and not encourage other children to kill them. We all became adults because of forgiveness. Kids do stupid things and we forgive them and try to protect them. A horde of adults beating 2 children to death is reprehensible. Though I admit if the shoe was on the other foot the two dead children would have jumped in to help kill some other hapless victim. Some cultures are simply not worthy of respect and are not worth saving.

  14. The attitudes you describe are tribalism, one’s age does not matter. The child, even a toddler, must be killed if it exhibits or even is suspected, of deviation.

The child is left-handed/albino/birthmarked, deformed. Aiee! It is of the devil.

  15. Maybe the muslims should form something like the ADL if they haven’t already. CAIR has said too many ridiculous things to qualify.

If they want a more censored society they could cuddle up to the christians, many of them want the same thing. Quit vaunting the superiority of Islam and come out for a more universal morality idea.

  16. albinos, left handed, how about a corrupt heart?

unfortunately the precedent of killing children is set in the koran.

فانطلقا حتى إذا لقيا غلاما فقتله قال أقتلت نفسا زكية بغير نفس لقد جئت شيئا نكرا

So they set out, until when they met a boy, al-Khidh r killed him. [Moses] said, “Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing.”………

وأما الغلام فكان أبواه مؤمنين فخشينا أن يرهقهما طغيانا وكفرا

And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.

hey muslim is the good one,

it just hit me. moses quotes 5:32. well not the whole verse. yet “the green one” kills this boy? “we feared he would overburden them”. so you can preemptively kill a person, a child no less? for corruption? transgression and disbelief that hasn’t even happened yet?

  17. After the Liyan gov saw the Chinese business run away and some other commercial ventures canceled, they must have mobilized a few mobs of their own, to hold up signs, force the militias to disband, etc.

Have your say!
