#MyJihad Twitter Bout Takes One Round

by Garibaldi

Danios has been writing a series on Understanding Jihad which rebuts Robert Spencer‘s lies, decontextualized and selective usage of Islamic texts and history to advance myths regarding Jihad. The series is unfinished, but has been credited for bringing much needed facts and perspective to the understanding and meaning of Jihad.

One aspect that is yet to be covered is how the majority of everyday, regular Muslims relate to Jihad, and what it means to them. Today, in response to Geller’s racist ad campaign calling Muslims and Arabs “savages” whilst juxtaposing “Supporting Israel” with “Defeating Jihad,” Muslims (and non-Muslims) have taken to Twitter to relate what Jihad means to them with the hashtag #MyJihad (h/t: Fred A.). Here’s a description from the Facebook page about the impetus for the campaign,

There has been a lot of commotion recently in broadcast and social media about hate ads placed in the NY Subway by islamophobe Pamela Geller that states:

“In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.”
What many on both sides of the debate are missing is that at the heart of the problem is the blatant misuse of the word “Jihad” as if it were an acceptable synonym of say “terrorism.”

Islamophobes aside, many Americans remain confused about this.

The best response to the hateful ad campaign is to convert it into an opportunity to get to the heart of the problem and to reclaim the word “Jihad,” a word many Muslims have shied away from and left to the ravaging of the ignorant in both the Muslim extremist and anti-Muslim extremist circles – both of whom seem to ironically agree on a bloody definition for the word. I love Jihad! Not Jihad the perverse way Bin Laden & Pam Geller define it. But: the struggle against ignorance, injustice & hate. It is the struggle against the darkness in ones own soul. It is the struggle to be patient in times of adversity etc.

Jihad is not savage, except in the minds of those who are too lazy or too careless to wish to understand a well-documented 1400 year old concept in both Islamic literature and Muslim life.

My Grandma’s Jihad was against diabetes and MS while bedridden for seven years. #MyJihad is against bigotry and hatemongering. What’s yours?

1. Tweet #MyJihad and tell us what your Jihad is.

Also this will be more than a twitter campaign. There will be an ad campaign as well in public transportation in various cities. The best tweets will be used as ads, so tweet away.

2. Donate and help us get physical ads on billboards.

Non-Muslims welcome, tell us about your Jihad too!

Anyone with the slightest bit of knowledge of the Arabic language and Islam knows that Jihad literally translates to “struggle.” Hence, the preponderance of involved Twitterati are relating the concept of Jihad to their everyday struggles and tying it to a spiritual dimension rooted deeply in their faith. It is clearly an attempt to reclaim the meaning of Jihad from the extremists and absolutists in both the “West” and the “East,” who feed off of each others hate.

An interesting interaction involving perennial anti-Loon Ahmed Rehab and hate monger Robert Spencer underscored how such campaigns can be effective tools in turning the hate machine’s propaganda on its head:

Robert Spencer made the mistake of tweeting at Ahmed Rehab with what he thought was a wisecrack and witty side-busting tweet, but ended up receiving a rhetorical Jiu Jitsu flying kick which left him floored. The question still stands Spencer, are you going to “watch” yourself now as part of your “Jihadwatch?”

  1. my struggle is against sharia. my struggle is against being lashed. my struggle is against being crucified, or having my hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or imprisoned. my struggle is for freedom: freedom of speech, freedom of the pursuit of happiness.

[24.2] (As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allah, if you believe in Allah and the last day, and let a party of believers witness their chastisement.

[5.33] The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His apostle and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement,

“decontextualized”, always hilarious. so what is tha context of lashing a person for having sex? always funny when muslims say people are quoting from the koran and taking it out of context. yet muslims often quote from the koran without mentioning it’s “context”.

so what muslims are saying is that the “divine revelation” can’t stand on it’s own? if i give a bunch of afghans or somalis a koran, they may not “digest” it properly without having extensive knowledge of 7th century arabian history.

  2. Pakistani clerics are saying their Foreign minister and her presumed lover should be lashed for adultery.

  3. Hina Rabbani Khar – clerics calling for her to be lashed for adultery. I suppose rich and/or prominent people might not be subjected to that sort of thing.

  4. No! They want to stone her for adultery – her presumed lover, too.

  5. Well Mike no worries….you don’t live under shariah….so don’t sweat it…but if u did….you only would be “lashed” for admitting to adultry if not married…cause in the history of Islam NO one has been actually caught by 4 witnesses who saw anyone in the act. Everyone who has been lashed admitted to the act and you won’t get your hand cut as long as you don’t steal from others…the cutting off of opposites limbs only comes in as a punishment for your own crimes against others involving kiddnapping and robbery. As the ayah states…if you commit crimes…you WILL be punished….we will not..I repeat not…slap you on the wrist and let you go. No freedom to harm, terrorize, slander, or use women as a piece and toss away….we will hold you accountable and punish you for your crimes against ALL humanity and make you be upright since it seems you are inclined to sin against yourself and others.

  6. Aaishah,

“you don’t live under shariah” thank allah for small mercies. but appearently muslim want to see shariah imposed in america.

“cause in the history of Islam NO one has been actually caught by 4 witnesses who saw anyone in the act.” well times have changed. in america we have things called cameras. and what about pregnacy being proof of the “crime” of fornication or adultry?

“NO one” you sure? i’m switching from lashing to stoning here, but it doesn’t look like these jews are asking to be stoned? what do you think?

    Volume 8, Book 82, Number 809:

    Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:

A Jew and a Jewess were brought to Allah’s Apostle on a charge of committing an illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet asked them. “What is the legal punishment (for this sin) in your Book (Torah)?” They replied, “Our priests have innovated the punishment of blackening the faces with charcoal and Tajbiya.” ‘Abdullah bin Salam said, “O Allah’s Apostle, tell them to bring the Torah.” The Torah was brought, and then one of the Jews put his hand over the Divine Verse of the Rajam (stoning to death) and started reading what preceded and what followed it. On that, Ibn Salam said to the Jew, “Lift up your hand.” Behold! The Divine Verse of the Rajam was under his hand. So Allah’s Apostle ordered that the two (sinners) be stoned to death, and so they were stoned. Ibn ‘Umar added: So both of them were stoned at the Balat and I saw the Jew sheltering the Jewess.

how about a more modern exapmle for ya and some good ol’ lashing.

“we will hold you accountable and punish you for your crimes against ALL humanity and make you be upright since it seems you are inclined to sin against yourself and others.” well i’m drinking a beer right now. you try to bring on your 80 lashes. lol. you’re funny. i do love my “sining” so. your god has no power here. we have a constitution that is more powerful then your ancient superstition.

  7. from “the religion of peace”. why is it i can’t stop laughing. sin against myself. aaishah you are the truely scary type of muslim.

you mean to hold me accountable and punish me. well my name is michael malzahn and i live at 2211 3RD Av. N. St. Petersburg, FL 33713. try to bring your punishment. lmfao.

    Volume 8, Book 82, Number 816:

    Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas:

‘Umar said, “I am afraid that after a long time has passed, people may say, “We do not find the Verses of the Rajam (stoning to death) in the Holy Book,” and consequently they may go astray by leaving an obligation that Allah has revealed. Lo! I confirm that the penalty of Rajam be inflicted on him who commits illegal sexual intercourse, if he is already married and the crime is proved by witnesses or pregnancy or confession.” Sufyan added, “I have memorized this narration in this way.” ‘Umar added, “Surely Allah’s Apostle carried out the penalty of Rajam, and so did we after him.”

  8. today’s news of the ummah’s contributions

  9. Aaishah,

“make you be upright since it seems you are inclined to sin against yourself and others.” no word on when? i’m still slouching. you sound like robert bork.

i’m not a playa, i just crush alot.

Surat An-Nūr (The Light) – سورة النور بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

سورة أنزلناها وفرضناها وأنزلنا فيها آيات بينات لعلكم تذكرون

[This is] a surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember.

الزانية والزاني فاجلدوا كل واحد منهما مائة جلدة ولا تأخذكم بهما رأفة في دين الله إن كنتم تؤمنون بالله واليوم الآخر وليشهد عذابهما طائفة من المؤمنين

The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah , if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

الزاني لا ينكح إلا زانية أو مشركة والزانية لا ينكحها إلا زان أو مشرك وحرم ذلك على المؤمنين

The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that has been made unlawful to the believers.

maybe this is why there are honor killings amoung the muslims.
