Italy Burqa Ban: Muslim Veil Law Passes Parliamentary Commision

ROME — An Italian parliamentary commission on Tuesday approved a draft law banning women from wearing veils that cover their faces in public. The draft passed by the constitutional affairs commission would prohibit women from wearing a burqa, naqib or any other garb that covers the face in such circumstances.

National debate over a “burqa ban” was back in the spotlight on Tuesday following an official request for the Senate to discuss the security implications of Islamic face coverings. Senator Ada Spadoni Urbani of Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party group (PdL) presented a motion on behalf of her party addressing the issue.
