TOLEDO — The Indiana man accused of setting fire to a prayer room at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo has been charged with hate crimes in a federal indictment.

The sprinklers worked. The structure was saved. Insurance will cover repairs. But the fire, heat, smoke, and water from the incident on Sunday caused major damage to the house of worship and school.

Officials on Monday ruled a fire at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo an arson, but remained tight-lipped about details. At least four people did a walk-through of the Perrysburg Township mosque Monday afternoon, though when asked for a comment, Dr. Mahjabeen Islam declined. Police on scene also declined to comment on the investigation.

A Middleburg Heights man pleaded guilty to putting a plastic camel with a noose around its neck on the apartment door of a Muslim person. Christopher M. Sanford, 25, entered a guilty plea to interfering with housing rights of another based on the victim’s race, religion or national origin.

Many Muslim students at Ohio State University have been outraged by an ad in the student newspaper that ties former Muslim student leaders in the U.S. to terrorist groups. The advertisement, which ran on the second page of The Lantern on Monday, lists 10 terror suspects under the headline: Former Leaders of the Muslim Student Association (MSA): Where Are They Now?
