Sri Lanka police has summoned the general secretary of the Buddhist extremist Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero to appear in Slave Island police on April 12th to question him on the incident that took place at Hotel Nippon.

Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnananasara yesterday defended the actions of Nayana Thakshila Perera who earlier forced two Muslim students to remove their attire which was in accordance with Education Ministry Circulars and Supreme Court orders, and ordered them to worship her.

Hate groups in Sri Lanka have made the attire of Muslim women a key target in their onslaught against Muslims. They have used security and the need for uniformity as reasons to attack Muslim female attire such as the hijab, the punjabi attire and the niqab.

International media’s attention has largely been on Myanmar‘s extremist Buddhist movement but Sri Lanka has an equally chauvinistic and extremist movement (Bodu Bela Sena) which has escalated activities over the past several years.

However despite the group’s grand relaunching of its anti-Halal agitation, the campaign is unlikely to make waves until CHOGM is concluded in Colombo in mid November, sources told Colombo Telegraph.

Buddhists and Muslims clashed after the attack, and police imposed a curfew in the area.
Last month, a group of Buddhist monks had protested near the mosque, demanding it be relocated.

At least 50 Muslim shop owners in Narammala in the Kurunegala District, have received death threats by mail. They have been warned to close their shops by March 31 or face death, Kurunegala district organizer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Abdul Sathar said.
